My first impression of Singapore began at 4am, as my watch on the bridge began. We had already left the South China Sea and entered the Singapore Strait, the entrance to one of the busiest ports in the world. The anchorage surrounding Singapore stretches for nearly 70 miles, and it is absolutely crammed with boats of every variety, but the most noticeable are the large tankers and cargo ships everywhere. I had never seen so many targets on the radar before. There were even oil rigs anchored there, waiting to be taken out to sea. Singapore is the gateway from Asia to Europe, and also refines something like nearly a quarter of the world's oil, so you can imagine how busy it is. I think the only busier port is Rotterdam. We picked up a pilot ... read more

The last day in Sydney started in wonderful sunshine wiith no hint of what was to follow! Samantha and Neil were out about 8am to run up and over the Sydney Harbour bridge and back before breakfast, while Stephanie and Tux ran round to the next bay and back, plus ran up and down the steep climb to the shoreline in Lavender Bay. I'd realised that when I booked the car to pick us up and take us too and from the airport to our accomodation that I'd not known the actual address we were staying at in Arthur Street. I therefore rang the company to let them know but only got an answerphone message. I rang about an hour later and another Russian (they all seem Russian for some reason!) confirmed that they had got ... read more

We stayed at Clarke Quay, which is a convenient spot for many restaurants and bars. We started our evening with a seafood dinner at Jumbo - the black pepper crab, chilli crab and oatmeal prawns were really delicious. After dinner, we had a walk along the river. Boat Quay was only about a 10 minutes walk away from Clarke Quay - there were more restaurants there but not as lively as Clarke Quay. Then it was another easy 15 minutes walk to see Fullerton, Merlion Park and the Esplanade. We had a good view of the Merlion and the Sands Casino at the Merlion Park and the night view there was magnificent. There was a laser show at 9pm along the river. On the next day, we went to the Sands Casino. Because it was a ... read more

The hotel staff is really friendly. We are staying at Mintraa in Little India. I really recommend this place. The very unusal thing for us is a combined bathroom with a toilet. Basically once you are having a shower you splash all water on the toilet. That can be quite hard. Our room is a 6 beds dorm. On our first day we went for a walk to Little India and Arab Street. We got lost at the beginning which was fun but finally we found our way. Little India and Arab Street were full of these little family stores, where people are actually working on the street and you can watch them while working. We went to Asian Civilization Museum and had a guided walk which was alright becuase the guide explained only the most ... read more

Singapore is a major financial centre. A small and tiny city-state in the far-east. It's a disciplined country which is one of the first to survive the 2008 world economic melt-down. It is one of the melting pot of cultures in Asia. One of the economic tigers. In 2008, APEC was held in the city. A financial centre trying to become the next Hong Kong. I enjoyed sentosa island and the food stands next to promenade metro station. Of all the cities I've visited, it is the place where I've enjoyed food. ... read more

WE arrived yesterday morning, the 5th February. It was clear and bright about 24 degrees. Whilst we both had some kip on the plane (me mostly) we were knackered!! The management found us a room straightaway (booking in time is usually lunchtime. Still the Merchant Court is a lovely hotel based on Clarke Quay in the central district. Anyway after couple of cups of coffee we had a few hours kip and were ready for the world. Our room has access to a Exec suite where there are beverages on tap free (including alcohol) from 6 - 8 in the evening plus canapes. For this first day there are a selection of photos around Singapore, especially the very impressive Marina Bay Sands hotel which we walked to today. We went up to the top for a ... read more

2 flights later, we arrived in Singapore. Got the underground to the city and made our way to Rodney and Roisins house. It was pretty late so we just had a wee tour of the house and facilities which were top notch, chatted for a while and then hit the pit! So we had a few ideas of what we wanted to do and see but then we were bombarded with ideas from Roisin and Rodney! We decided to spend (30th Dec) our 1st day on Orchard Road, which is the main shopping district in Singapore. We were walking around for about 12 hours straight. We went to shopping centre after shopping centre. Of course had a few coffee breaks! To be honest, shopping in Singapore would make you green with envy because there are so ... read more

Having had a day at sea to recover from two back to back port stops, we arrived at Singapore early in the morning and waited for most folk to be processed through customs before alighting at the ultra-modern Cruise Terminal at about 10.00 am. We had walk off facilities and no steps (like airports used to be) and were deposited in a building with turn-key facilities including tourist information, cashpoints, money changers, shopping centre, bus station, underground station and aerial cable-way. Nowhere in the UK could compete; and not just at the harbour side. We took advice from the Tourist Information, and first went by metro to Chinatown. The Singapore MRT is state-of-the-art and probably the best and most efficient underground in the world. All announcements are in English, trains run on time and station platforms ... read more
