We knew how expensive it was going to be compared with the rest of Asia and so we decided to camp for free in a public park. We were supposed to get a permit but the lonely planet again failed in doing its job properly and we could not get this permit as we are not residents of Singapore so anyway we decided to chance it and went and camped without one. We again arrived to rain and so ended up sat in McD’s with a coffee until it died down. It took us a while to walk to the camping ground but when we did others were camped there and it was next to the water so quite a nice place and we found a spot under a tree so some protection from the rain ... read more

After a smooth few hours flight from the Philippines we arrived in Singapore and right away we could tell that we were now in a rich mans playground! As you approach Singapore from the air at night, you see an endless stream of ferries docked in the harbour with the city skyscrapers lit-up behind – it is an impressive sight! At the airport we were even offered one free sweet on arrival – Tina expertly took full advantage of this by grabbing a handful in true backpacker style, no shame at all!! We jumped on their handy MRT subway to check into our hostel, and waited for Kate who was joining us for the weekend. When she arrived we took a quick trip to Chinatown for some cheap grub and a beer! We were saving ourselves ... read more

The Beginning Well after a long flight (and 10hr wait in Dubai) I arrived in Singapore on the 17th Jan. Managed to get on my pre-booked shutlle bus despite the bus leaving before I had cleared immigration and made it to my hostel (Hangout at Mount Emily) just before midnight. Even this late at night the difference in the weather is aazing at a balmy 23C. I have really enjoyed Singapore and been to many of the must-see sights. I spent my first day travelling round the city seeing the different areas and visited the beautiful botanical gardens where I got bitten by the mosquitos . In the evening I went to the Marina Bay Sands with 2 of the girls from my hostel and we managed to sneek up to the Sky Garden without paying ... read more

Wasn't expecting much from Singapore, all I knew is that it was expensive and I managed to cover it in 3 days with 100 Singapore Dollars. Mainly due to eating cheap food again and staying in a really nice homestay styled hostel called Ali's Nest. 13 dollars a night based in Little India. Ali was a cool host although he had a cold, always got free toast and chilled out in his house and no matter what time of the day it was he always said Good Morning. Just wondered around taking pictures of this and that and walked along the longest street with shopping malls or something. Just hundreds of them selling the same thing. We did walk it in the evening as their were supposed to be lots of lights for christmas. Not a ... read more

Well, I'm having a bit of an eventfuly journey home (fingers crossed I make it all the way back!). I left Wellington on the evening of the 27th of November and I was meant to leave Auckland at 1am on the 28th. By 5am I was in a hotel in central Auckland and not half way to Singapore as planned! Due to runway light failure at Auckland airport I eventually left Auckland at 5pm and arrived in Singapore 16 hours later than expected. I was supposed to have two days in Singapore and I ended up having only one. I tried pretty hard to fit everything into one day but time totally ran out on me and I didn't managed to get half of what I wanted done. I gave it a good shot though, getting ... read more

Right, been a few days since I've last posted, in fact im not even in the same country, Singapore to be precise, but I'll head back a few days and fill you in on whats happened! Luke and i didn't get to see much of Kula Lumpur on our first day, its pretty difficult when you dont get out of bed until 3pm ( damn hotel rooms without windows, its so confusing ), but in our defense we didn't go to bed until 7am! Anyway, we both felt like we couldn't go anywhere until mike arrived, if you haven't read other posts we left mike over a week ago on Ko samui as we headed to Ko phangan and he headed to ko Tao. With our brilliant minds, not, and the magic of facebook chat we ... read more

Hello blog! I know its been a while but please forgive me! I have so much to tell so please sit comfortably, grab a drink, ignore any spelling errors and lets get back to Asia - leaving KL and visiting Singapore! Okay, KL was amazing and a place I would love to visit again, however all good things do come to an end (so nelly furtado tells us) and on the 27th Novemeber we left KL for the bright lights of Singapore, and red light district! A dodgy 5 hour trip to Singapore did however turn into a 9 hour frustrating journey however luckily I had Mikey back with me, my iPod was fully charged and I had just spoke to James - so I was happy. With only a short stay in Singapore, we used ... read more

Moving on from KL we spent a few days chilling out in Melaka before we were to move on to Singapore. Melaka was the nicest place we had been to in Malaysia. Melaka historically was an important trading port and consequently over time had been occupied by many countries such as Britain and Holland. So this town had many cultural influences and a vairety of colonial buildings which gave it character. We stayed in an old Chinese medicine shop which had been converted into a hostel, which had a pleasant rustic feel to it. On the friday and saturday we were able to experience the market down Jonker street. Here we tried a speciality called Cendol, which is a combination of shaved ice, syrup, pasta and kidney beans... The ice and syrup was nice and sweet, ... read more
