I arrived in Singapore early this morning, safe and sound. I spent the morning wandering around, getting a bit lost, just taking it all in! The people here are super friendly, the weather is nice this afternoon but it was stormy this morning when I arrived. Starting to form some plans already. Another girl in my dorm arrived today too so we've been trying to combine some of our ideas, her name's Steph and she's from Stuttgart. I think we're going to the 'night safari' on Thursday which is meant to be amazing. Anyway, I just wanted to leave a quick note so everyone knows I got here in one piece! Hope everything's ok at home... Missing you all! Love Streets. xxx... read more

OK well for those of you who don't know, I'm a 23 year old Irish guy who has spent the last 8 months living in Australia. During which time I met a Kiwi girl called Bex and a German guy called Alex and after seeing a tree fall over the three of us randomly decided to do a bit of traveling together through Asia for a few weeks, or at least that's the "Short Version" :P Right so today is the 12th of March 2012 and it's the first day of are travels. The plan was for me and Bex to fly to Singapore and for Alex to meet us here tomorrow because he left to do a bit of traveling up the east coast of Oz for the last two weeks. So the story of ... read more

Although only a 9 hour bus journey from the sleepy village of Cherating, Singapore city is a world apart. Magnificently glitzy skyscrapers dominate the skyline, Singaporeans’ hurry through the ever efficient metro system, walking with purpose whilst the covered food markets of China Town and Little India cater for both shop workers and business men. By far the most expensive destination so far on my trip I spent only a couple of nights in the city, heading out by day to visit the sky scrapers around Marina Bay, shuffle through the malls selling designer labels like a pauper and returning by night to eat curries in the bustling food market in Little India.... read more

The flight from Hong Kong to Singapore was quite cold. I decided to wear my cardigan and quick dry pants instead of my typical hoodie and jeans in anticipation of the warm Singapore weather. What I didn't account for was the cold air conditioning we'd have on the flight. Our other flights so far have not been air conditioned, and I've often been quite hot in my hoodie. So the flight was air conditioned. So what? This also meant I couldn't use my sweater as a pillow. We were put in an emergency exit row, which was great in terms of leg room, but also meant that we couldn't recline our chairs. For whatever reason, I was much more fidgety on this plane ride than my other ones so far. I couldn't get comfortable, I couldn't ... read more

After an amazing time in Borneo it was time to head to Singapore for a day. We didn't get to do much in Singapore but what we did see was cool and a bit of a culture shock after the places we had just seen. We saw a Topshop and a Nandos!! Instead of making us homesick we craved to get back on the backpacker route, lucky for us our hostel was out of the way right by the local food centre, which was amazing. The food in both Singapore and Borneo is lush,Nandos has no chance against the local grub. We spent the day checking out little India and the City Mall before we were hit by a storm that almost drowned us! We got ourselves to the airport for our flight to Bali in good time ... read more

Our first day in Singapore was spent waiting for our bag to play catch up and trying to stay awake. We were staying in Little India, so spent some of the day walking around, trying some of the spicy cuisine on offer and admiring the mosques and Hindu temples. The next day we were lucky enough to be taken around the town by an old friend of Stuart’s parents. He picked us up from our hostel, took us lunch/dinner and to see the Christmas lights in Orchard Road, as well as a drive through China Town. The following day and feeling a bit less jet lagged we made our way over to the Colonial area and to the Asian Civilisations Museum. We got to see lots of statues, weapons, jewelry and artworks from all over the ... read more

Well this has to be the cleanest and safest City in the world. I can't believe the number of 24 hour cafes and people using them. Can't wait to get out there tonight and get a fell for what's going on. I know when the news channel signs on at 6:00 AM they play the National Anthem. Remember when the U.S. used to do that? Their Anthem is very beautiful too. Most Singaporeans are of a mixture of Malaysian and Indonesian descent and they're very pretty people. Also, very friendly. People more than happy to help me this morning on the street. I felt very safe, haven't even seen a beggar, etc. Can't wait to hit shopping and go to Raffles for my singapore sling at the Long Bar, Perhaps buy a souvenier from Raffles. Well, ... read more

You look lost, taxi is that way, you see? Okay, have a nice day, See you!" bukker smilende og går. Jeg er nu endnu mere paf. Hvad? ... read more

GOODBYE SMILING FACES, orange stone carvings, puja (Hindu offerings), and infinite palm trees; hello shopping malls, food courts, tall modern buildings, clean toilets, and things that light up in the night. By the time we got to Singapore both Travis and I were kind of sick of planning. This made us kind of terrible tourists. Instead of picking out famous sites to visit we just kind of wandered through the streets bleary eyed not really knowing where we were going or what we were looking at. That being said, this blog is probably not a great representation of what a trip to Singapore could be. Regardless, we spent three nights there and definitely got a good taste of what this city-state is all about. We were surprised to learn that the official language in Singapore is ... read more
