After some beaching in Bantayan, I decided to go to Malapuasca to do a specific dive: the Thresher Shark dive off Monad Shoal. It's this sunken island where threshers go to be 'cleaned' by the wrasse. Since my diving experience was so minimal, I had to sign up for the dive as a Deep Dive Adventure Dive meaning I had to do some reading and had an instructor with me at all time. So disappointed, I didn't get to see the Threshers. It's like 25% chance of seeing them. :( I was tested for narcosis but didn't seem to really feel like at the 28m that I was at. I wonder what it would be like. All well, I guess I can safely dive to at least 28m without feeling drunk!... read more

I'm just relaxing at Bantayan at the moment. It's low season so there was pretty much just me on the beach for a quite a long time. Unfortunately, the sand wasn't as nice as the picture--it never is. Lots of shell bits. I saw a baby jellyfish. I think it's the first time I've ever seen a jelly fish. It was so small--pretty dark coloured though. I've never seen a jellyfish but I assumed that that is what is was...hm...Anyways, it was all on its own near the shore. Perhaps it was dead. I have no idea. I thought about touching it to see but decided it wasn't worth the risk. Lots of reading done. Just picking any random book off the resort shelf that was in English. Most are German. I find that odd.... read more

Urgh...that bus ride was long. 3.5 hours on a non-AC bus. I stayed at a place called Quo Vadis. Pretty sweet room actually. Even had a mini fridge. I went on my first Fun Dive and saw a turtle! A turtle in the big blue!! It was so cool. Moal Boal had no ATM and I didn't have a lot of currency on me so I had to head back to icky Cebu City.... read more

Ok, I've already decided that all cities in the Philippines are gross. And I mean gross by SE asian standards. NOT western standards. Do they think that 'installing' aluminum 'urinals' in the middle of the sidewalk actually handles the public urination problem? I got a comment from some reader about staying home if I expect to see cities like in Canada. No, I don't. Of course not. I was just shocked that the Cebu was still so gross in my opinion after already having been through so many other third world cities. Sure the pictures always show the beautiful landscape. Why wouldn't they? Who would be attracted to the dumps? "Oh, that looks like an interesting dump to go to." Not many. Heading out to Moal Boal today. Right away. It's about a 3-4 hour bus ... read more

Two Weeks in the Philippines: Part III: Bantayan and Cebu City We arrived in Cebu City around 5 p.m., much later that planned, and had to decide whether to stay in the city for the night or try and take a private car up to Bantayan. I knew we wouldn't make it for the last ferry, so either way we would be spending the night someplace other than where we planned. Charito called up one of her friends who lives in Cebu and she said she has a friend who drives to Bantayan all the time, so we called him up and he was at the airport in 10 minutes. It was a larger passenger van, and it had AC so I was happy with it; we had it all to ourselves. Being in the PI ... read more

We finally got to a beach, but not before some drama.......leaving India we left behind Sean and Fiona, for they had some passport issues, ( frecking Irish, so unorganized) anyways we boarded a late plane to Singapore, knowing it was an overnight one, but we wouldnt get much sleep....we didnt, and then got to the singapore airport to wait for 9 hours until our flight to Manila left....but to see how new and clean it is in singapore was a breath of fresh air... So going on 24 hours no sleep we boarded the next flight to manila, and once in manila we were going to connect to the Cebu flight that left 1 and half hours after we landed, assuming we would have plenty of time....we landed in Clark airport...asking ok were is the domestic ... read more

Philippines (part two) After a few nights in Dumaguette, we jumped on a boat then bus up to Moalboal and checked into Pacitas, home of the legendary Saturday night disco. Marie was delighted to see that we had arrived on the night that the disco was holding the ‘Pacitas Bikini Open 2006.’ This started quite tame with girls walking around onstage in bikinis - then, came the ‘individual show-down round.’ Contestant number 1 came out with a 1 litre bottle of Red Horse and proceeded to pour this over herself whilst dancing around on top of tables. Andy and Fraser thought this was a waste of a particularly good beer. Marie loved it though. After Moalboal, we headed to Cebu City for a night out. Fraser got food poisoining from a dodgy buffet that cost about ... read more

Malapascua-- an island off the northern coast of cebu. Although the beach (shoreline) is not as nice as Boracay in Panay, overall, the place is a beauty. Been here a couple of times. It's a nice place to relax and get lost-- runaway from all the hassles of the world. Best Restaurant: 'La Dolce Vita'. A nice Italian resto in the island. Great Food! The owners, I was told, are Italians (duh!) who comes back to the island every 6 months (never got a chance to meet them). Best Activities: Diving. One of the few places in the world (I think) where sightings of Tresher Sharks are almost guaranteed. Mantas can also be seen, especially during the wet months. Also a good place for novice divers as currents are next to none. Doing Nothing. The island ... read more
