These last couple of weeks have been a mixture of the rushed and relaxed. To start at the beginning, which you have doubtless realised rarely happens in my blogs, arriving in Cebu, I gave myself a similar challenge to Manila of getting to my hostel in Cebu City without the use of a taxi. Naturally, arriving during a monsoonal downpour gave me second thoughts, but they both passed quickly, and so first I went in search of a tricycle to Lapu-Lapu City, though I am at a loss to the use of the word 'city' here. It was more of a random collection of backstreets, which I travelled through on the back of a bike, rucksack still firmly attached to my back, and more than one confused stare from a local. Unlike many travellers that, ironically, ... read more

BANTAYAN ISLAND, CEBU Was in Cebu yet again for work. Had lots of fun though because there were a lot of us. We were all booked in Marriott which we all thoroughly enjoyed because of the new beddings and pillows (truly fit for a princess!) and the great breakfast spread. Sunday was Chinese New Year so the hotel was bedecked in red silk lanterns. We were working over the weekend though so we weren’t able to do much except a little shopping at Ayala Center and a night-out at Mr. A’s near Tops Saturday night (which was perfect because it was Chinese New Year’s Eve and we could see the fireworks BELOW - yes we were so high up, the fireworks looked like they were coming from just a little above the ground). Anyway, after 3 ... read more

So I am going to post old pics for now from my travels around the Philippines, starting with my Holy week trip with my friend Ellie to the province of Cebu, where another good friend Chanda is from. Original plan was to spend the long holiday in Boracay, but since we were there last year for Holy week and then again for New Year's Eve, we decided to venture into 'alien' territory and packed our bags and hopped into a plane headed to Cebu. First night was spent bonding with Chanda, but the next day was something else. We crammed the half day to tour the city and its surrounding towns that were easily tourist attractions. I couldnt really compare Cebu to Manila because it would not have been an accurate comparison, have I had one, ... read more

Was in Cebu over the weekend for a business trip. I wasn't feeling well so was not able to go around much. The city is busy with preparations for the Sinulog next weekend. In fact, traffic is already getting congested from the number of tourists already in the city for next week's festival. Saturday's PAL flight was delayed as usual. We got there just in time for me to check-in at Marriott and have a quick look-see at the new Banilad Town Center. The building is nice, with a quiet atmosphere. Many Metro Manila brands still unavailable in Cebu are there (Yellow Cab, Holy Kettle Corn, Gonuts Donuts, etc.) so as expected, the AB crowd are flocking there like bees to honey. Lunch was at Ayala Center Cebu then official business for the rest of the ... read more

Happy New year everyone!!! Sorry still no pictures. It has been the hardest thing trying to find an internet connection that doesn’t cost and arm and a leg and has USB connection. The dialup that I use here at my uncle’s is pretty slow. I just copy and paste from a word document. I have given up on the pictures, and will just show you all or email some when I get home… New years was pretty fun as in the Philippines they have “laws” about personal use of fireworks, but it does get pretty sketchy when we sit on a roof, and people are setting off “globalfest level fireworks” off their house. Sounds like we’re at war, with gunshots and loud firework blasts in every direction, but you look in the sky and it’s beautiful, ... read more

Cleaning up my files, I found this little article I wrote right after our trip to Malapascua in the summer of 2002. Just wanted to share it. Sadly, all our pics of the trip were in manual cameras so can't post them here. ========== Illumination in Malapascua I heard of Malapascua for the very first time in the October 2001 issue of Cosmopolitan. I was, for lack of a better term, smitten. I decided I just had to go. So I did. My boyfriend and I are avid supporters of Pinoy tourism. Once while watching CNN, we saw for the first time the wowPhilippines ad. No joke - we both got teary-eyed. It’s a great ad, one of those you can truly be proud of. While our friends dream of vacationing in foreign countries, we want ... read more

Welcome home Ety! As a welcome gift to Ety Bea who was coming back from US, we went to Badian island, Cebu. Our first choice was Plantation Bay but it was fully booked and we ended going to Badian Island - we never regretted. Good thing I was able to accumulate enough PAL miles to bring us to and from Cebu at Mabuhay class. From the airport, we were picked up by a van included in the package we availed from a Travel agency we got via Internet - it was a 3 hours drive down south Mactan, Cebu airport. Badian Island just opened their doors to locals last year - we were the only Filipino family spending vacation this time. Badian Island is different. You won't see the crew going around much. It was ... read more

Here's my first entry... I'm in Cebu city, on the island of Cebu. It's a lot smaller than Manila, and supposedly much nicer, but I'm finding it nearly as squalid and impoverished. I took a boat here from the island of Masbate (it's north of here) with my travelling companion, Redj. It was an overnight sailing. When we arrived at 6 am, there were poor families in outrigger canoes paddling right beside the ferry, holding out blankets to catch coins that they were asking people to throw down. The ferru had to go very slowly into port to avoid running these beggars over... We got into port and there was a dead cat on the sidewalk rotting away. It must have been there for weeks already. No one had bothered to clean it up. There was ... read more

ACCOMMODATIONS 1. Unless you can afford to stay at Shangri-la Mactan or Plantation Bay (which charge a minimum of P8K/night!) or go to the really nice but far beaches like Malapascua or Bantayan, you're better off staying at the city. The beaches in Mactan, after all, are just a 30-minute cab ride away. There is Marriott (around P4K/night) which is in the Central Business District and is adjacent to Ayala Center Cebu. This is where I stay when I'm on a business trip. If you are on a budget, there are a lot of pension inns / business hotels in Cebu City. I recommend Castle Peak Hotel along F. Cabahug which is just a 5-minute ride from Ayala Center. Even with the super-peak rates of Sinulog festival, they only charged P1110 net per room per night. ... read more

No pictures, again. Sorry folks. I promise as soon as I can find a place that will make a CD for me, I will put up pictures. Just updating since the last entry. I am now PADI underwater certified- yay!! It was so exciting to get the certification- well, okay, the quizzes and test and studying was a little stressful since I haven't had to use my brain in that capacity in a while. But other than that, it was fun to just play in the ocean and learn how to use all the equipment. On Sunday, we went out for our first real dive and saw some really cool things. We saw sea turtles!!!!!! It was AMAZING! I couldn't believe they were just swimming around. There was one that was less than 4 feet away ... read more
