Planning and preparations… And here I am… In Kathmandu… Honestly it seemed like this day would never happen… Probably because I started thinking about this trip a year and a half ago! So I guess I had quite some time to prepare myself for this journey… Still the more time you have, the further you postpone the preparations… At least that’s how it was in my case… And since I couldn’t really decide where it was exactly that I wanted to go, the itinerary was changing throughout quite rapidly… The more I was reading about different countries and the more I followed the adventures of fellow bloggers, the more confused I was getting and the more chaotic everything seemed… I have to say at no time at all I felt prepared for this trip, neither physically, ... read more

Spent a lovely day with Noel having lunch and doing some last minute shopping bits in preparation for my trip to Nepal. He dropped me to the airport and we said our goodbyes trying to ignore the lump in my throat. I remind myself that it is only five weeks and then he will join me. Checked in and arrived at the security area met with the usual sullen faced security staff who exude that unnecessary and very unbecoming air of authority they feel they have justification for. My hand-luggage didn’t come through and, after a mild panic and scurrying about, I found that it had been dumped unceremoniously with a queue of other discarded baggage awaiting more indepth inspection. I waited about half an hour before someone acknowledged me and my bag and I was ... read more

Landed safely. A couple of uneventful flights - the hardest part was getting through the queues at Heathrow - I dislike third world airports, especially when they're in supposedely first world countries. Views of the snow-topped Himalaya of to the side of the plane as we flew into Kathmandu made the feet tingle slightly. Met by Sugam (Shaleish's son) at the airport and efficiently transported to the "penthouse suite" of the moonlight hotel in Thamel. Don't get too excited, it is a bit special for Kathmandu but I've already had a few polite arguments with the bare-bone electrics. Bit of a waste not to be sharing it though...wrong continent again...ho hum. We fly early tomorrow morning (06:45 if all goes well) and the skies are looking clear so early start and should be on the hills ... read more

Photos soon too Hello everyone. It doesn't seem like two weeks ago I was losing the plot. It was a close call though, I was avoiding as many people as I could and then it sort of hit me in the face. I relaxed and could deal with the touts and countless offers for Rickshaws, Hash, Hotels, and whatever other crap they could sell or get a commission. So, how does one relax and handle it? I have absolutely no idea, but I can only tell you how I dealt with it. I remembered from Paris, a group of certain Indians who always followed you around trying to sell 5 crap keyrings for one Euro. I remember, I didnt get angry but merely threw the annoyance back in their face by begging for 1 keyring ... read more

Nepal Kathmandu We arrive at Kathmandu (Aka - K) airport on schedule with Jet Airways via Delhi (where the Transit Lounge is one of the best we have seen in all our travels! Delhi has come a long way). Jet service is ace as usual. After the immigration formalities we are met by Siling our friend and Director/Owner of The Responsible Travellers Ltd. It’s good to see him after 4 years. The drive to our hotel in Thamel (Hotel Thamel!) – the backpacking heart of K - is as usual noisy, bumpy and dusty – welcome to Nepal. It’s a hot 27-30 C & slightly humid. However after about an hour we get used to the chaos and feel pretty much at home. The thing you need to know about walking around ... read more

While I have been working Michael has been exploring Kathmandu and re-tracing some of our steps from our last trip here in 2008-2009. He took himself off to the Monkey Temple which is the nickname for the Buddist temple of Swayambhunath, which high on a hill to the west of the city. And we say hill...we mean hill....although the benefit is a great view overlooking the city of Kathmandu. There is a steep stairway leading up to the top of the temple complex and along the way you will encounter monkeys and the usual stalls selling handicraft and souvieners to the tourists. Monkey Temple is so called because of the large troop of monkeys that "guard" the hill and temple and amuse or scare the tourists with their antics - but I prefer to give way ... read more

Hello Everyone! We had a bussights seeing day. It was one I'll never forget. Out first stop was the Monkey Temple, Buddhist temple on the highest hill in Katmandu. Obviously it was named for all the monkeys that inhabit the area. It had a view of the whole valley, but the air quality is so poor you really can't see much. By the way, today was the first day of a huge two week Hindu festival so the traffic was terrible. The second spot was very disturbing to me. It was along side the "most holy" river in Nepal. I think it was called the Great Place of Cremation. the Hindu people believe in cremation of their dead. This area is where they do their cremations, all out in the open. Large stone platforms, called Ghats, ... read more

We have been in Kathmandu for about 2 weeks now and are settling into a bit of a routine. But, firstly, back to the beginning. We had a good easy flight with a stopover in our favourite little "airport" hotel - The Floral Shire Resort - not fancy but clean, breakfast and free transfers to and from the airport. Thai Airlines had offered us an extra 10kg each free because we were volunteering but I completely misunderstood their regulations and all our baggage had to be booked direct to Kathmandu from Brisbane to get the extra kgs - so a mad dash around the airport to buy toothbrush, deodrant, etc for an overnight stop in Bangkok. Met at Kathmandu airport by my very excited friend, Manoj, and Buddha (president of the Gandharba Cultural Art Organisation.....we were ... read more

Hello from Kathmandu, The day I arrived in Kathmandu, on Oct 2nd, I was feeling sick, so I spent most of it resting in the room. Unfortunately, this illness hasn't really started to go away until tonight. The next day I got up and walked to one o the famous stoopa's, or Buddhist temples, in Nepal. It is called Swayambunath. Dad and I decided to walk there as well, because it is only about a 20 minute walk. We're staying in Thamel, which is another touristy area of Kathmandu. I found it really difficult to describe Bangkok and Chiang Mai, because theres so much going on. It's even more so the situation in Kathmandu. The city has been really 'developing' in the past few years. There are basically 3-4 story buildings everywher, so that the whole ... read more

26th-27th Sept, London to Nepal via Delhi Ok so we’re at Heathrow now and got checked in straight away, our rucksacks weighed 4.2kg and 7.5 kg so I reckon we did really well at cutting the weight down! It was another horrific overnight flight and it was packed! Once again neither of us got any sleep, this time partly due to having 2 babies and 1 small child sat in the row in front of us. However I did get to see two films – The Hunger Games (good but not as good as the book) and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (a lovely film, you can’t go wrong with a bit of Ewan after all!). We arrived in Delhi – I have no idea what time or day it was and were surprisingly ok considering ... read more
