Apologies for the late start for this blog, unfortunately there has been a lack of wifi throughout Nepal, but now I can begin! Blog#1 - Kathmandu Our journey began in Heathrow Airport. After saying a very sad goodbye to our family, we made our way onto our first flight into Asia. We arrived in Mumbai, India pretty disorientated, but excited! Our time in Mumbai was a short one, as we were only there for the transit flight to Kathmandu, Nepal. The wait was long and slow, as well as being eaten alive by thousands of mosquitos, neither myself or Joe were able to get any sleep because of the time difference. The time finally came to board the flight to Kathmandu, which in my personal opinion, was one of the most spectacular flights I've been on, ... read more

Genteeee, foi mal não consegui atualizar o blog por muito tempo. No Nepal a internet era bem ruim, nem as fotos eu conseguia ver. Enfim... deixa eu contar a minha aventura lá.

We have arrived safe and sound! Kathmandu is crazy crazy! Never seen anything like it on the road, mopeds I have seen cutting up but there's people just walking in front of cars and then randomly in the middle of the crazy moving traffic there's a traffic warden directing traffic!! Fuji hotel is lovely it's so close here though about 26 degrees and no air!!! Lightning storm at the moment which is cool as we're on the 6th floor. I've learnt three Nepali phrases namaste is hello, ha-Zur is yes and Dhan-ya-bahd is thank you. On the flight from Oman to Nepal there were only four westerners on the plane the rest were Nepalese. Lovely people met a great guy called Ne-ma who we were chatting to in the airport and he was sat by us ... read more

As we are going to be in Nepal for 3 years, Alex thought it would be a good idea to send me on a cooking course so I learn how to cook a good curry! After searching around we came across this cooking course http://nepalicookingcourse.com/that is the best rated activity in Kathmandu according to TripAdvisor. A phone call later it was sorted, (from what I could gather) I was going on Monday morning for 3 hours of Nepali cooking. After trying and failing to establish where I was going to meet Amrit, He suggested the best plan was for me to get into a cab and get the taxi driver to call him to find out where to go. This worked and I was dropped off Asan square, in the heart of the old town Asan ... read more

Kathmandu is one of the finest places that I have ever visited and coming from a guy that's been traveling for over 40 years, that's saying a lot. Flew to New Delhi from Bangkok on Jet Airways which is an Indian discount carrier. Very good airline. Changed planes in New Delhi. Be advised that there is a heavy, Indian military security presence in the airport. After deplaning you will have to go through another security check-point. X-ray luggage, pat down, the whole nine yards. I was happily surprised to see that my U.S. passport got me fast-tracked through the entire ordeal. The soldiers were quite friendly to me and seem genuinely interested in where I came from. When I told them that I had grown up in Chicago they immediately started rattling off the names of ... read more

There's a charming little place in Kathmandu called Cookie Walla Cafe. Its pretty much a hole in the wall that serves proper Israeli/Middle Eastern food. They also have a popular Indian dessert called "Say Hello to The King" and many other variations of it. I had the Say Hello to The Joker. It had crushed cookie crumbs, served with whipped ice cream. Topped off with caramel and sprinkles. Really hit the sweet tooth. I also had the Sabich. A popular Israeli street food wrap (See picture above). This place is quite popular amongst Israeli travelers. Ironically, I was introduced to this place by an Israeli traveler.... read more

Newari Set: This was my first meal in Kathmandu. I believe it was a Newari Set. Consisted of Buffalo meat, lentil salad, potatoes, some crunchy flaky bits and a lot of spices. Nepali Khana Set: Rice, Dal (lentil soup), and two different curries. One with cubes of cheese (my fav) and yogurt for dessert. The yogurt here is amazing! Very similar to Vietnamese yogurt. Yogurt is used in a lot of Nepalese dessert. I don't know what this is called. It can be found on small carts along the sidewalk. Potato f... read more

Rooftop Thamel Rooftop Thamel Thamel is the tourist center of Kathmandu, Nepal. There are numerous souvenir stands and trekking agencies. Majority of visitors come to Nepal for its natural beauty and trekking. I am no different. There are also bars that caters to every visitor's interest. The area itself exudes a peaceful enlighten state, which intrigues travelers. The streets of Thamel are crammed packed with stores, venders, restaurants, people, mini hatchbacks and motorbikes. It can be a little overwhelming for those who are claustrophobes. The smell of incense hovers above. Outside of Thamel,... read more
