Tomorrow, Michael and I fly out to spend 5 weeks in Nepal - mainly Kathmandu. Other than our several return trips to Vietnam - this is the first time we have returned to a country that we have previously travelled to. But this will be a trip with a difference. Early this year I was successful in winning a place in the School of Social Entrepreneurs based in Melbourne for 2012. I was very excited to be given this opportunity and have been travelling regularly to Melbourne for my block sessions. 2012 is the first time people living outside Melbourne or Sydney have had the opportunity to participate in their program....how lucky am I? SSE's vision is - to see a world powered by passionate people, creating real and tangible change throughout society and in their ... read more

Hey there! So we are finally in Nepal!Dan is currentlystressing over trying to get Yellow player to work to listen to the Oxford match so I have been left the grand task of hyping up what we have done so far! We arrived here on Wednesday 5th after a sleepless night in Singapore. The worst part was when I went to the toilet at around 2am; minding my own business reading the sign on door...(I was not poohing just to point out!)...when the most spontaneous, out of the blue, shockingly terrifyingly, right over head clash of thunder enveloped the hostel!! Needless to say I disregarded the eco friendly policy of turning off the light when leaving the toilets, to run back to the bedroom! Anyway, going off task there...at Singapore airport we waited for our flight ... read more

Get out of here ASAP. It's complete chaos and, at least during the low season, you will not be left alone to walk the streets in Thamel. The accomodations are poor (compared to anywhere else in Nepal that I visited) and the power goes out throughout the day. It's hot and dirty and loud. To avoid dealing with a taxi, I walked through some slums to get to Swayambhunath from Thamel. It was longer than I'd expected, but everyone I asked for directions from was pretty helpful. If you don't have to buy gear or gifts, I would really consider staying near the Boudhanath stupa, which isn't far from the airport. It's actually peaceful there, and really no more touristy.... read more

Wow, is my first impressions of Kathmandu. Arrived at the airport a couple of hours ago, and everything hits you - the smell, the heat, the people, the colour, the noise. Finally got out of the small brick building (baggage claim) a little late. Got picked up by my programme organiser and headed to the gueshouse where I'm staying and currently blogging from. The ride was pretty amazing for having been in the country about half an hour. The streets are packed with so many people, some at work, some chilling, school kids etc, and not to mention the amount of traffic. You just see people on their motorcycles driving everywhere and oh there's no conduct of driving rules or laws or anything. If you see an empty bit of road - use it, some try ... read more

Today was our first full day and last in Kathmandu. It is a hard city to describe; it is truly the 4th world. However, there is something utterly magical and fantastic about this place, and the people more than make up for it's filthiness. We are greeted at every turn with "Namaste," and a half bow. First we met with a travel agent named Ram, who comes from a long line of Ghurka soldiers. He helped arrange for our very own Sherpa guide when we trek in the Himalayas, our rafting, rappelling, and Elephant safari. We later wandered around the city, taking the recommended tourist walking tour to the Durbar Square. We walked past ancient temples, shrines and stupas wedged in between ramshackle buildings. Several parts of this city look as though there were bombed, and ... read more

I woke up today saddened by the fact that we are leaving Tibet, and chances are I will never return. These people have touched me, and their plight and oppression will haunt me forever. We arrived at the Nepalese border after going through 4 Chinese military checkpoints, within 8 kilometers. At customs I was told that my Lonely Planet book would be confiscated due to it’s accurate depiction of historical events. I had carefully cut out pages from my China lonely planet to fit the Tibet one before I had left and happily it worked. A Chinese immigration officer confiscated someone’s travel guide right before us, so I was definitely feeling the stress as if I was smuggling illegal goods. Our bags were first x-rayed, then rummaged through by hand. They showed keen interest in some ... read more

We were supposed to fly back to Kathmandu around 9:20AM. Rather than hang out at Hotel Yeti, we decided we would skip breakfast and go to the airport around 8:00AM which was early. In Nepal, 45 minutes is enough time to arrive before a domestic flight. When we checked in, they said our flight would be delayed 30 minutes. No problem. At 1:00PM, we were still in the Pokhara airport. Our frustration was visible, especially Megan's. This was her last day in Nepal. I at least had all day tomorrow. Our flight had a mechanical problem. No one bothered to update us. No information was provided. No announcements were made. This is the way in Nepal. So we waited. Our flight finally arrived around 1:30 and we made the short 45 min flight to Kathmandu. Nabin ... read more

Okay, so after some painful hours in New Delhi Airport with practically no sleep at all, I got on the flight to Kathmandu. It was a very different crowd than the one on the flight from Russia to India. Here it was Tibetan Monks and very characteristic looking Himalayan people, and other travellers like me. From the plane I could see the himalayas popping up through the clouds and further down, rice fields in the mountain sides. It was all very hilly and full of mountains. When I landed in the airport in Kathmandu (which looks nothing like the typical airport, more like a small office in reed brick walls) I had barely picked up my backpack before I was asked if I needed a place to stay. I hadn't got any sleep for roughly 30 ... read more
