Penang (Georgetown) From Ko Lipe, Beat (Swiz Friend) and I headed to Georgetown, capital of Penang, old historical British Colonial Island on the west coast of Malaysia. Due to the heavy Monsoon season in Malaysia I had decided to stay on the west coast of Malaysia all the way past Singapore down to Bali (if I didn't choose to fly home for an NHS op first). Due to the time of year this also meant missing what I heard were excellent dive sites of Borneo. As soon as we got off our bus journey straight away we bumped into Fabio again (small world, or were we just reading from the same guide book?!), who we hung around with whilst here in Georgetown. We did enquire about the beaches in Penang, but when we said that ... read more

We didn’t wake up early today. Afterall, our room rate doesn’t come with the breakfast. Instead, breakfast was at this local coffee shop opposite the hotel. I remembered that my sis and I had the same food 2 years back. Food tasted great at modest prices. After grabbing a couple of boxes of tau sa piah at the market, it was time to say goodbye to GeorgeTown, to hit the North South Highway again back to Kuala Lumpur. On our way, we stopped by Penang’s Esplanade to take in the sights of Fort Cornwallis and the Clock Tower before embarking on the ferry to cross over to mainland Malaysia (Chin Yoong’s car included). If there’s one minor regret for me, it must be missing Penang Hill for the 2nd time. On a brighter note, grateful that ... read more

It has been a little while since we last updated the blog. Firstly, Happy New Year to all! We spent Christmas Day in Ko Samui, lazing on the beach, having a massage. I am the only person on the beach that needs to be covered with a towel as they have goose bumps! We rounded the day off with an Italian meal on the beachfront. Not traditional I know, but our first taste of pasta in nearly two months! It was good, and was washed down with some red wine! From Ko Samui we were in search of a quieter beach, and headed to Ao Nang on the other side of the Thai peninsula. We had been told to be ready for a 6.30am pick up, so we sat up at the reception waiting for the ... read more

As we have been travelling around Malaysia we have heard a lot of things about other places around here from other travellers. And we only heard one thing about Penang, that it was bad and should be avoided. That the taxi-drivers always try to rip you off. With this in mind we considered going straight to Langkawi instead but changed our mind as there was only a bus to Penang. We found a nice place to stay in called 100 Cintra Street. It is also an art exhibition and museum. It is an 120 years old building just brought back to old style. Georgetown, the big town on Penang Island is where everything happens. It is in old style as there hasn't been a skyscraper revolution yet. All the houses looks like there have been there ... read more

So we planned along while ago that Penang would be where we'd spent Christmas Day - one of the few dates where we actually had an idea of what we were doing. Having been there once before, about 10 or so years ago I wasn't exactly sure what to expect and although I was sure it would have changed. And it had so much. There were huge hotels and shopping malls everywhere. It was quite a sight sailing into the ferry terminal at night as the coast was illuminated by the rows of tall buildings. We moved round the north coast slightly, over to Batu Ferringhi beach to spend our first 4 nights on the island there. Checked into a comfortable guesthouse and settled in for Christmas - Caroline decorated the room and even managed a ... read more

"I'm dreaming of a white Christmas, just like the ones I used to know. Where the tree tops glisten and children listen to hear sleigh bells in the snow". White Christmas was blaring out of the PA system at high volume in the Prangin Mall, Panang whilst I was eating a noodle soup. White Christmas was followed by a rendition of: "Rudolf the red nosed reindeer had a very shiny nose And if you ever saw him, you would even say it glows." All these eulogies to the virtues of snow in tropical Malaysia, where they never see snow! I've spent the Christmas period in Penang. The people here definitely celebrate Christmas, along with all the cheesier element I might have thought I had escaped. I left Thailand on the 22nd of December (see my previous ... read more

Hi everyone and Season's Greetings! We've been on Penang island for the past few days, which is off the north west coast of Malaysia. It's very hot, about 30 deg and feels hotter in the sun! Until today we've been staying in Batu Ferringhi, a beach resort-y type place on the north coast of the island but with some good budget places down the road from the high rises. The beach was very nice with golden sands, but the water is probably best described as 'Bognor Regis Brown'; it's apparently fairly clean (there were lots of people in there anyway) just not very nice looking! Apart from the beach though, there wasn't a great deal to do other than head to the town down the road (Georgetown, where we are now) but it was a surprisingly ... read more

Well, the free computers in our hostel are all in use right now, so I borrowed Randy's laptop to write this entry. Unfortunately, it seems to be unable to detect the wireless connection right now, for some reason, though, so I decided to just type an entry in Word and I'd upload it later. Unfortunately, Randy doesn't actually HAVE Word on this computer. That kind of blew my mind, but I guess he wouldn't really have any need for it since it's a brand new laptop for his Korea trip and he's not taking any courses or anything so I suppose he wouldn't have need for a word processor. This version of WordPad is pretty good, however, so all is good. So... boys are definitely a strange breed. I've had a high concentration of guy friends ... read more
