Friday 15th January 2016 With a day of travel ahead, we headed out for a quick breakfast at the small kitsch Disney themed restaurant we had been to the day before called 'Into the Woods'. Feasting on scrambled eggs, waffles drizzled in chocolate sauce and sipping coffee whilst humming along to Aladdin's 'A Whole New World', we were just about ready to say goodbye to Thailand. We picked up at our bags from the guesthouse and hailed a red taxi van to take us to the airport. In the taxi we met a Slovenian group travelling through Thailand. So far we've met people of all ages and from all walks of life, within this group were some young parents who'd decided to leave the kids at home to embark on a backpacking adventure with their mates. ... read more

Unser Führer Bunnao erwartet uns ... read more

On rigolait bien. On avait développé des ... read more

A friend of mine once told me that we make plans to change them... So a few days ago, I biked from Si Satchanalai to Sukhothai, as planned. Another nice day of cycling, cool and quiet in the morning and then really hot after 11. I arrived early at my guest house and decided to go to Sukhothai historic park right away since my room was not ready. It is an interesting site, similar to Si Satchanalai but bigger and busier. Since it was so hot, I did not stay that long but enjoyed seeing the beautiful Bhuddas in the park. It's after that that my plans changed: I was offered to go back to Tanzania to guide on Kilimanjaro in December and potentially in February as well. A big change from what I had planned ... read more

So we arrived in Luang Prabang early in the morning, wrecked as anything. The bus station is a while outta town so we all climbed onto a songtheuw, cost us 20,000 each but it was either that or walk as there was no bartering to be done! We met a guy from Aregentina who gave us wanderlust to travel in South America and Nepal ? The first thing we noticed when we got to the center was the amount of street vendors selling baskets of food at 5am and there were loads of plastic chairs all lined up like a massive assembly line along both sides of the road! This was a very commercialized alms for monks town! I love the idea of the alms, of giving and good karma but I wasn't in favor of ... read more

We'd heard that the roads to Luang Prabang were even more tortuous than previously (could that be possible?) so we opted for the minibus mode of transport again. We were in some of the same company as on the previous bus (the 2 young Brits, the 2 Korean girls, the 2 American guys) but we were joined on this occasion by several native Lao people. Even so, we were still the oldest on the bus .... We were soon stuffed to the gills with people and luggage, and two sacks of corn plonked in the aisle completed the load. The conical straw hats that the Koreans had carefully carried since we first met them were unceremoniously shoved under a seat by the driver (who needs foot space?), one of the Americans braced himself against some of ... read more

Even though we live on a beautiful island, we still have jobs to do and need a break now and then. After working hard days and long hours for eight months we decided to take a well deserved holiday in Luang Prabang, Laos. We had been there before, maybe nine years ago, and remembered how nice it was and wanted to visit again. On our last trip we did many of the touristy things there are to do. Waterfalls, river tubing, temples, elephant rides and trekking were what we enjoyed then. This time our goal was to RELAX and eat! What we remembered the most about our last trip in Luang Prabang was our guesthouse near the river and across the street from a temple. We could hear the monks chanting in the evening just outside ... read more

Luang Prabang: A town that almost all travellers in Laos pass through, sometimes the only place in Laos some travellers on a 3/4 week South East Asia tour visit. Attracted by the Mekong riverside location, the abundance of golden glittering temples, the saffron cladded monks that causally roam the streets and the many activities on offer here; Luang Prabang is generally a place in South East Asia that is described as one not to be missed. Arriving in town, we were dropped off at the north bus station around 1.5 kilometres from the centre. As usual a couple of tricycle drivers waited for us patiently and instantly seized upon the opportunity to make money from some unassuming westerners. Unlike the rest of the group who willingly jumped in a shared large tricycle for 20k kip each, ... read more

Nick: A quick 45 minute flight, and we had exchanged the relaxed atmosphere of Vientiane for the even more sedate town of Luang Prabang, located further north in Laos. By midday, we had already checked into our guesthouse; our lovely wood-panelled room had both air-conditioning and a fan, a real bonus given that the sun was out and the temperature was once again in the mid-thirties. The staff at our hostel were once again very friendly, with excellent English, and we were soon equipped with the standard issue photocopied town map, complete with highlighted points of interest. Attending to our stomachs before exploring the town, we popped into a nearby restaurant, a quiet little family-run place, and ordered in some grub: chicken noodle soup for Sarah, and a pork 'lahb' for me, which is a Laos ... read more
