Hi everyone, Well it was another early start for us on Saturday as we left Pakse and headed for Don Det and the 4,000 islands We left around 7am and picked up our breakfast from the Indian restaurant we visited the night before. We also had to go via a pharmacy as Paddy was unwell and they diagnosed his symptoms as gastroenteritis and gave him a cocktail of drugs to take bless him. Very cheap though and he looked like a drug dealer with his pills in little see through bags Lol. Once out of the city we were settling down for the long journey when we pulled off the road to visit the achient monument and world heritage site of Vat Phu monument. This is the site of a former Buddhist temple which was Hindu ... read more

Hello readers! Well as you know from my previous blog Paddy, Pauline, Boon and I decided to get up early to watch the England vs Italy game (wish I had stayed in do bed now lol). I met Pauline in reception, Boon was a no show, light weight, and Paddy had headed off early, must have been excited to,watch the game, strange for a Irish man lol. So Pauline and I headed up,to the bar and met Paddy there. I thought there would be more Brits there but I guess it was too, early for the party animals and youngsters lol. I won't dwell on the out come of the game as we all know the result! After the game we headed back and I tried to get some sleep but it was no good so I ... read more

As mentioned in my previous blog it was an early start leaving our home stay to head for Pakse. It was a long trip and the endless padi fields and villages along the bumpy roads lay ahead of us. We only stopped for petrol and comfort beaks. We Arrived on the outskirts of Pakse, but continued on to the waterfalls about 20km outside of Pakse. We stopped for lunch which took an age to arrive at it was an overpriced sandwich and no fries! So rather disappointing, but the loo facilities were 4* compared to those we had recently encountered lol. We then headed to the waterfalls which were about a 10 minute walk away. First we visited the top of the waterfalls to take some shots of the river which feeds them and also got ... read more

hi everyone We left Tha Kek and headed in the pouring rain for our home stay at Ke Champhong. So it was another long boring journey on our bus, passing miles and miles of paid fields and villages which all start to look the same after a while lol We first needed to get lunch as there is only one restaurant on the way and previous experience has taught stray that the service was slow. We stopped off at a local street vendor for a baguette but her choice of fillings did not float my boat so Paddy and I headed over the road to the restaurant we had tea at the evening before. We paid moe and had to wait longer for a lovely club sandwich and chips lol. So back on board the bus ... read more

We finally managed to secure a bus ticket out of Phnom Penh... the city had certainly done its best to keep us there but it was time to move on. Given we had spent the extra (unexpected) time in PP we decided to head straight up to the Laos border. We unfortunately missed the opportunity to see the Irrawaddy dolphins at Kratie, and some spectacular jungle at Ratanakiri, but it just means we'll have to come back! We arrived at Stung Treng 8 hours later, thinking we would stay the night and get an early bus across the border. To our delight when we arrived at a guesthouse there was a minivan leaving in 20 minutes, so we decided to just keep on going! Negotiating customs at the Laos border took us over an hour (it ... read more

I enjoyed my stay in Laos. From its dense jungle to its breathtaking waterfalls. I spent a lot of time exploring central and southern Laos. Next time I will take more time to explore the northern area. Although, Laotian culture shared many similarities with its neighbors, it also has its own distinctive flavor. Laotians are very laid back. It can be difficult to find Laotians losing their cool. I did not expect to see so much Vietnamese living there. I thought I was still in Vietnam. Throughout my time in Laos, I developed a love for sticky rice. Sticky rice is the foundation of the Laotian diet. Often eaten with your hands, sticky rice goes well with everything. My favorite dish to eat with sticky rice is Larb, mince meat with various herbs and fish ... read more

Ferry crossing to Champasak./caption I heard of a Khmer temple in a small town of Southern Laos called Champasak and decided to check it out. As soon as the bus dropped me off, I had fallen for this place. It was a sleepy town with amazing scenic views. A ferry took me across the Mekong and off to Champasak I went. Champasak is a town frozen in time. The streets were aligned with French Colonial architectures. There were barely anyone on the street. There were absolutely no tourist attractions in this town other than Vat Phu. The locals were extremely laid back. It took me a bit of time to locate local foods, but it was simple and delicious. Every meal included sticky rice. I've developed my love for sticky rice here in Laos. After three ... read more

Next stop Don Det. Paradise indeed... South of Laos near the Cambodian border where the Mekong River split into thousands of little islands. It is believed that there are 4000 little islands. Thus this area is called 4000 island. There are three major islands that attracts tourism: Don Khong, Don Det and Don Khon. Don Det and Don Khon are pretty much right next to each other. Don Det has a backpacker vibe while Don Khon offered more scenery. Somphamit Waterfall can be found on Don Khon. There are also dolphins on Don Khon! Who knew? I thought dolphins were inhabitants of the sea. I didn't get a c... read more

Asia » Laos » South » Tha Khaek March 19th 2014

Made it to Tha Kaek. This city is not at all what I'd expected....here I find myself in a Vietnamese guesthouse which turned out to be a brothel. I should've done a better job looking around for a decent place, but its not easy to do such things after a 9 hour bus ride in this heat. There were two young lady, a young man and his 3-4 years old daughter. They were nice people. They offered me dinner, which I accepted without hesitation. They also offered me other "accommodations." What is a man to do?!? They were very normal people. It surprised me how casual they lived their life. In the morning, one of the girls lit incense on the front porch to ask the spirits for good luck. I never thought people who ran ... read more

We woke up early and went for a walk across the bridge to Don Khon to have a look around and to see if there were any guesthouses over that side. We had slept well but the room had a lot of holes in so easy for bugs to get in and the mosquito net also had holes in so we woke up with quite a lot of bites each, so decided to look for somewhere else for the next couple nights. We found a really nice place on the river! One of my favourite places so far. After moving our bags over there, We got something to eat then found some bikes to rent for the rest of the day. We cycled back over to Don Det for the day and explored there. We cycled ... read more
