Asia » Laos » South » Pakse May 27th 2015

Kate and I decided to leave Tad Lo today - a very pleasant place but not a huge amount to do. Before catching the bus back to Pakse we were going to go up to see the Bolaven Plateau but because of the heavy rain that was falling and visibility being about 10 metres we had to give it a miss. So instead we said our goodbyes to the lovely owners and their children, and made our way by taking the local 'smiling lady' taxi back to the main street to wait for the bus. Nearly an hour later and the bus finally arrived and only stopping for a wee in the bush on the return we made it back to Pakse. Swopping onto a songtheaw ( pronounced songtel) we finally made it 4hrs later south ... read more

After yesterdays antics of mostly getting very hot and sweaty Kate and I decided to have a more chilled day today. So not venturing too far from the guesthouse we found somewhere to sit for me to be able to catch up with this blog! With this being our last day in Laos we thought we'd end it with watching the sun set. Arranging with a bar owner to do a boat trip we met him at 4pm - and probably a relative/friend who owned a boat! First things first and that was to find an ATM - so after being dropped off at the mainland and stocking up on some kip we headed off for a trip around some of the islands. Watching the evenings activities of fishermen casting their nets while water buffalo laze ... read more

Asia » Laos » South » Savannakhet May 20th 2015

After thankfully not a bad journey we arrived in Savannakhet at 6am. Sharing a songtheaw into the centre with an Italian couple we got dropped off outside an expensive looking hotel. Popping in to mainly ask for directions we all started walking to find a cheaper place to stay. A local older chap saw us probably looking a little lost and bewildered so kindly came across to help. Speaking very little English he walked with us up to the first guesthouse - with no one speaking a word of English ( and my Laos not up to much) I think they were fully booked! Kate and I headed off, flagged down possibly the only tuk tuk to take us to another guesthouse I had previously made a note of. Pictures of it looked good online but ... read more

After a good nights sleep in a proper bed Kate and I decided to look into travelling further south again today. Savannakhet is a pleasant place to visit for a day but with no chance of doing any out of town tours we had seen enough. Wandering back to Lins cafe we had some breakfast and took a couple of pictures with the lovely owner. In low season the cafe kinda doubles also as the tourist information place - killing 2 birds with 1 stone - good idea really. So finding out the bus times to Pakse we had just enough time to pop across to the local temple. Wandering around the grounds we saw a collection of monks sheltering away from the sun under a tree, as well as a couple of men putting the ... read more

Having spent yesterday evening walking around Pakse ( its tiny) and from what we had both read, Kate and I were happy again to move on today. So after a quick bit of shopping we jumped in a tuk tuk back towards the bus station. This time we were travelling 2hrs east of Pakse to a small village called Tad Lo. So finding a better seat than yesterday on the public bus we headed off with a bunch of locals and 3 girls travelling from Germany. Stopping off a couple of times en route for locals to get out to buy bags of pineapples from road side stalls or to have a wee in a bush! We had made it - well almost, the village was a further 15min walk down a side road. Feeling like ... read more

Asia » Laos » South » Si Phan Don March 23rd 2015

Si Phan Don or also known as the 4000 islands is situated in the South of Laos near the Cambodian border. In the low rain season you can litterally see these 4000 islands appearing in the Mekong river. There are despite these 4000 islands only three islands where you can stay, which are Don Dhet, Don Khon or Dong Khong. Most of the backpackers are going to Don Dhet, which is famous for its exciting nightlife. However, we decided to go to Don Khon, where you have less hostels and where it is a bit more quiete. We really wanted to relax and enjoy the beauty of the place without having noisy music all the time. We slept in a beautiful little bungalow with a terrace in front of the Mekong. We had a fantastic view ... read more

A noticeable change of pace seemed to occur as soon as we crossed into Laos from Vietnam at the remote border crossing in the Southeast of the country. This is perhaps not surprising given that the population of Laos is only about seven million and their attitude towards life is far more laid back than that of their neighbouring countries. So we arrived in the fairly remote little town of Attapeu and spent a few days just soaking up the tranquility and cycling around the town on a couple of bikes we had hired from the guest house. Well that was after the very cheerful lady owner had dragged them out of a corner, dusted them off and pumped up the tyres. We got the distinct impression that not many foreign travelers pass through this way ... read more
