On the 7th we decided that it's time to leave Vietnam so we booked a bus to Savannakhet, Laos on the 9th. As we were told we arrived at the travel agency at 7 am and 15 minutes later they brought us to the public bus station in Hue. The guy who brought us there took our passports to check us into the bus but it took quite a while and I had a gut feeling that something wasn't right and I was proved right (as always. haha) The guy told us the bus to Savannakhet is full and we should go on a bus to Pakse instead. From there on we would have two possibilities: either getting off in Seno at 4 pm (20 km to Savannakhet) or going straight to Pakse and arrive there ... read more

Geo: 16.4958, 105.756Up at 4:30 for an early breakfast and by 6:00 we are stood outside the house waiting for the school bus to pass. We normally catch it up the road a bit at 7:00 but decided today to catch it before it did the rounds to pick up all the kids as then it passed in front of the house and I wouldnt have to carry a bag any distance. It finally arrived at 6:50 and plodded off to the next village of Pak Chong where it picked up anyone who was bothering to go to school today then returned to Kamnadie and did the rounds there as well before setting off for Phon Thong. Sharing the bus with all of these schoolkids should have been anexcellent opportunity for Planet Stupid research but to ... read more

It's been a while. A couple of fustrated blogs went missing after i typed them out. So 3 strikes and thats will be that. After Vientianne , we went to Kong Lo caves, this was one of the sites we had planned on visiting. We were lucky to find a bus that went there directly, as our bible (The lonely planet) mentioned we had to take a few different buses and possibly an overnight stay in a small town on route. The bus drove directly to a brand new guest house khonglor eco-lodge, i mean just finish building, brand new coloured sheets the plastic was still on the toilet handle. 1 klm from the cave and only 60 000 kip. For 100 000 kip we get 2 guides witgh head lamps and a small boat. one ... read more

Monday 14th February 2011 We took a quick walk around town and checked out Wat Sainyaphum, the oldest & largest monastery in Southern Laos, followed by the Dinosaur Museum (which was a small room with bones & fossils in drawers) unfortunately all of the narrative was in Laos & French. The rest of our day included a peek at the old French architecture and lunch by river before taking a Tuk Tuk to the bus station where we were ushered onto a local bus to Pakse. What a disaster!!! This journey should have taken 4-5 hours tops; but due to a stupid American couple causing massive fuss about not having enough leg room and no-where to stow their bags (what do you expect for a pound?) we ended up pulled over at the side of the ... read more

After the island of Koh Tao, we had to head back up north to get to Laos. The journey ended up becoming an epic voyage as we made our way to the South Laos border on the east side of Thailand. We spent 33 hours on a epic journey to Laos. We spent the next day in Savannakhet cycling around and enjoying lunch along the river. We also stopped to chat with a Monk who was teaching younger monks at a temple. The 'mini monks' were so cute in their orange robes. Our first major stop in Laos was at a small village called Na Hin, which is used as a place to base ourselves in order to experience the thrills of Kong Lo Cave. We had to get a bus from Tha-ket and get dropped ... read more

I use the pun in the title not to describe this nation, but the journey it took to get here! on 22nd I got a bus from Hoi An to Savannakhet, with an arrival and duration time of 24 hours, starting 7.30am By 7.30am I'd not even left Vietnam, a distance of about 80miles. Tops. I arrived here in Savannakhet some 35 hours later. Here's the long and short of it (i.e. the long - sorry!) I left Hoi An with an angry man on the bus jabbing his finger at a bunk (t'was a sleeping bus) and saying "YOU - THERE!" Fortunately a local over his shoulder saw my plight and shook his head at me, indicating I can take any bunk I like. So I did. With this man, he gave me bread so ... read more

I left Thakhet on the 27th to travel to Savannakhet. Savannakhet is a sleepy city, a transit city for travelers crossing to Thailand or to Vietnam. I checked out the Catholic Church just off the decrepit town square, in the centre of town - the church is still in use. It is a holdover from the French occupation of Laos. I also enjoyed a marguerita at a bar floating on the Mekong at sunset! The table was made from water rotted lumber from sunken boats. Makes for an interesting pic with the sunset in the background. ... read more

The journey to Savanakhet took slightly longer than it was supposed to, we eventually got off where told. It was dark and we were in the middle of nowhere. As the driver unloaded our bags we asked how to get to Savanakhet, he pointed down a pitch black road . After trying in vain to find a cab/tuk tuk/any form of transport to get us there, we asked the driver who was of no help but luckily a passenger ensured we got on another bus, heading in the opposite direction. After another hour or so, which included time for some huge packages to be untied from the roof of the bus at someone’s house, we arrived in Savanakhet at the bus station and jumped on a Tuk Tuk. It wasn’t that late but late enough that ... read more

We arrive in Savannakhet at 4am on the 15th (my birthday) and find ourselves sitting on the side of the road waiting for the guesthouses to open their doors. As dawn sheds it's first light upon this new city we instantly get a good vibe for it despite our exhaustion. Monks in saffron robes collecting their morning alms breathe life in to the deserted streets and soon the city awakes around us. We enjoy our stay in Savannakhet tremendously! Finally we find a place which has retained it's character as the tour buses pass this unassuming city by and head south to the more popular 4000 Islands. We see only a handful of westerners during our stay and the local people are welcoming and friendly. With renewed high spirits we immediately rent a bike and start ... read more

Well. Long time no write! And now I am writing this, but I am unable to put up pictures and cannot say when that will happen. Internet, among other things (ATM's, flushing toilets) is a bit tougher to come by here in Laos. First of all- I wanted to clear up a little issue. On crossing the border from Cambodia into Laos!!!!!!! Americans and Canadians can absolutely positively purchase their visa AT THE BORDER. When they cross. It costs $35, plus a $1 bribe. (They have change) DO NOT buy your visa in Phnom Penh as it costs $50 there and they WILL LIE to you and tell you that you can't buy it at the border. One small snafu that I heard rumored but did NOT encounter was that sometimes the visa office closes at ... read more
