We've begun our journey south. We are currently in the second largest city in Laos- pop 125,000- called Savannakhet. We are going to stay here for a night or two and go see something called the Monkey Forest- Andy is very excited. Yesterday we were in a small city called Tha Kheak. There wasn't much to see in the city itself but we went on a group tour to a cave about 3 hours outside of the town and it was amazing. It was huge. It runs 7.5 km through a mountain connecting two villages. We took a boat through it and some of the caverns we so big would couldn't see the top with our lights. It was lots of fun and we met some nice people. We are currently traveling with two Danish people ... read more

What do a motorcycle, a dog, and cabbage have in common? Hopefully not much, right? Wrong. They were all on the 10 hour long non-air-conditioned bus ride we took from Savannakhet, Laos, to the capital, Vientiane. First, lets get out of Savannakhet. After waking up on our own without an alarm (it felt so good to sleep in a bit), we checked out, left our bags with the guest house, and ventured out to explore the city. Since it's not a tourist destination, we didn't find much, but it was still fun to find a little restaurant to grab a bite of breakfast. We both enjoyed AMAZING homemade banana pancakes. We walked around to the waterfront, but turned quickly around as it was a bunch of tuk-tuk drivers waiting for people like us. One of the ... read more

Leaving Pakse (another five hour bus trip) - we seemed to be spending a lot of time of buses - took us further north to Savannakhet. I liked the town immediately though it was very quiet. It had great vibes! It is not on the tourist trail though as a new bridge has just been completed across the Mekong River (the third bridge across the river connecting Thailand to Laos) this may change. A big tourist attraction here is a Dinosaur museum (there have been many dinosaur bones found in the region) but we weren't planning on visiting it. We had chosen a hotel from the guide book to be dropped at - it stops the tuk tuk drivers pestering you upon arrival at the bus station - but it wasn't the best choice as ... read more

Our next stop was a massive push up north, after 10 hours on a local bus stopping at every possible place, buying every possible thing on sale on the sides of the road, we finally made it to Savannakhet. Savannakhet is a border town to Thailand, we didn’t realise how close it was, right across the river. It was too much for G who has been waiting to go to Thailand for 8 odd years since her last planned trip got cancelled. But she has to wait until we’ve seen the rest of Laos before she can go, in the mean time we enjoyed strolling around the old town of Savannakhet. Once again you see old French Colonial buildings everywhere, unfortunately the government aren’t interested in restoring these beautiful buildings, so they are all pretty much ... read more

This was truly a quiet town and if this was the hub of Southern Laos then I can only imagine what the rest of the region is like. You can see French influence all throughout the town in the set up, the buildings, and the food. It wasn't a bad thing but I was expecting to maybe see a few more foreigners. I saw none the first day. By the time I left I made it up to 11 I think. My time here was basically spent wandering the town and trying to get out of town. There is a casino a few miles from town but I did not check it out. I was told that it was really nice, of course nothing like Vegas or AC. Most towns along the Mekong are preparing for ... read more

So yes I realize that the last time I wrote was about a month and a half ago and I was in Nepal but I have been moving and shaking and have since ended up In Laos. I left Pokara in Nepal and headed to Kathmandu, which turned out to be an incredible place but truly crazy and a lot like India with the pollution and the garbage. But I enjoyed it a lot, ran into a group of friends I met at the forest I was working on in India and hung out with them for a few days before making the decision to fly to Bangkok straight from Nepal instead of trying to go back in through India to get there. So I took one of the nicest flights I have ever taken ... read more

Hi All! Sabadi Pii Mai Laos - Happy New Year Laos! It's a jolly old Lunar New Year and the main theme of the celebration is a religious one. Throwing water out from all of the housesto wash away evil spirits, this also includes taking water to the temples and washing the Buddha statues (if you manage to visist a certain number (11??) of temples during Pii Mai you are given good luck for the year ahead. Without a doubt though, the real Pii Mai as a lot of you already know is just a huge hue countrywide waterfight with flowing Beerlao! I am still travelling with Rick, Emma and Alex and arrived at our guesthouse on NY's eve. Of course for the English this is the big one (ny eve) so we all went out ... read more
