After we left the chilled, rainy and 'Friends episode' infested town of Vang Vieng we jumped on a bus to Vientiane - the Capital of Laos - commonly described as a big-size village.. Says a lot about the country right! ;-) Its an alright place - next to the Mekhong River of course - with lovely places accomodating the tourists but also priced accordingly.. :-( We spent 2 days there but the highlight of our stay was a 45min swim in the local 25m pool and a visit to the very local mini-shopping mall. This place had approx 30 fake gold shops and even more fake brand clothing. The place was packed! (We didnt buy anything ;-) ) To find our way to Pakhek we had to swap between several tuk-tuks, mini-buses and big local buses. ... read more

I did a three day trek around Dong Phu Vieng NP. I had a fantastic time. There were ten of us on the trip plus our two guides. There were two french couples, two Australian girls, an Israeli couple, an American girl and myself. DAY ONE We travelled in a sawngthaew for two hours, picking up locals and dropping them off in different places. Savannakhet is well known for dinosaur footprints so we saw a few near a small river. They were quite small, with three claws. I was expecting bigger and more impressive prints. Then we travelled two more hours in the sawngthaew. It was a really pretty road, passing rice fields and there were plenty of mountain ranges in the distance. Once we got off the main road, it was 21km of dirt road. ... read more

If you are not one of our family and friends, we would be really interested to know how you found our blog - please email us at olarse@hotmail.com - many thanks! (N) "A lot of life is about doing something essentially pointless and not necessarily very enjoyable in order to feel the satisfaction of having done it." I read this quote recently in a Times article by Robert Rampton, and it sums up one major chore I completed before leaving for Latvia in September (albeit only on the morning of departure), namely going through all my old Wanderlust travel magazines (about 7 years' worth) and reading the stuff relevant to the places we were going. One tip advised entering Laos from the Thai town of Nong Khai, which we hadn't considered previously and is pretty much ... read more

Thursday, November 16th - Monday, November 27th -- 3220 KM to date After a few wrong turns and innumerable curse words I wheeled into Hoi An late, blinded by bus lights and searching for potholes in the dark. Sitting in a low lying coastal area Hoi An was one of a number of unlucky cities to be pounded by successive storms and devastating floods over the past month. Less than a week before I rode into Hoi An water levels had risen high enough to grind the National Highway to a halt and wreak havoc on the towns and villages along the central coast. The worst flooding to hit in years some said - bad enough to have local residents reminiscing over old photo albums and pointing out water level marks on buildings around town. ... read more

i actually think that maybe my brain is rotting....... i feel like a snobby, spoiled tourist, but i'm really bored here in savannakhet. we have eaten some incredibly ordinary food, and exhausted the sight-seeing possibilities by about 9:26 this morning. i think that all this "chillaxing" is catching up with me - suddenly i feel the urge to go and do something improving, like working in an orphanage for so little money that i can't afford to eat. maybe i'm missing those days of being in australia and dumpster-diving and being on the dole, etc. so i'm whingy. and there's nothing like a lack of decent food to make me whinge even more. perhaps i'm becoming food-obsessed..... i seem to be developing the habit of flicking through the 'planet for restaurants that say "vegetarian" anywhere in ... read more

Day 131 Just as the south bus station is right out of town so is the north. We got a tuktuk for the 8km journey and picked up the next local bus to Savannakhet - this time it was a proper coach, albeit a little prehistoric! The journey was uneventful and we arrived in Savannakhet and found a place to stay in a lovely wooden house - the furniture in our bedroom was so cool - very retro (you'll have to take our word for it as we forgot to get pictures). After a late lunch we wandered around the town, another very quiet place with a crumbly French feel to it. Walking down the riverside we found a group of men playing boules and sat for ages watching them, thoroughly entertained. At first we couldn't ... read more

From Kratie we got a minivan to the boardertown Stung Treng. There we had to wait for hours. The reason was to wait for the next bus they said. After two hours we got on a ferry to travel over the Mekong. Still in Cambodia, just five minutes away. And then more waiting. This was very strange as our driver was there and his car was there and to me there was no reason to wait. Well, there was one reason. If you don't get to the Laos boarder by 16 you will have to pay 2 dollars because it's overtime for the people working there. So it's really a big conspiracy. Well, 2 dollars isn't much but I don't like officials being criminals, even though all politicians all over the world are. Anyway, we ... read more

The next morning we started the trek. Also on the trek was a French couple, a Dutch couple and a Dutch guy. They were good people and we are still travelling with the Dutch guy called Jan. Since there was more than us the price dropped to 35 dollars. Everything started with a visit to a salt-mine. Not that it is a mine in any way. There are really big beds that salty water is sprayed upon and then the sun evaporates the water and the salt can be collected. Since we come in the rainy season these beds can't be used. Instead they use another kind of bed under a roof and with a fire underneath to get rid of the water. I already knew how to make salt so from that point of ... read more
