Five years ago on my first trip to northern Laos, I visited Vientiane - Luang Prabang - Phonsavan (the Plain of Jars). This time I decided to visit Savannakhet province in southern Laos. My route on the 6-day trip was as follows: flight Hanoi - Huế city, bus Huế city - Savannakhet, back in Vietnam by bus, then flight Đồng Hới city - Hanoi. My wish on this trip was to see southern Laos, as I'd not been there yet, plus National Highway No. 9 which was the famous site in the former Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) during the American war. From 1954 - 1975, the Bến Hải river served as the demarcation line between the North and the South of Vietnam. DMZ consisted of an area 5km to either side of the demarcation line. I wanted to get me some Ho Chi Minh Trail so I finally hauled my ass to Sepon. It was long overdue but due to some laundry issues and DIARRHOEA dito my B-hind got stuck in Shitsavannakhet for longer than I wanted to. It was nice leaving that gate to Hell, where everything went south for me. However, I had a long ride with the dreadful local bus ahead of me. Five hours on a piece of a shit thing... To my horror I noted that this one had a TV-monitor at the front of the bus. Shit! The only thing that was positive so far with these rolling pieces of junk were that they didn't feature the famous karaoke-videos. Off we went and after a couple of hours I was getting a bit grumpy from ... read more

I've been thinking of doing my own version of the Lonely Planet guidebook, based on places I've stayed at or/and seen, but I'm just too lazy to keep a good record of things and I can't remember the names of places I've stayed at (or remember to grab a business card...) But bad experiences, which fuels me with hatred and disgust, always inspires some writing! 8-) First of all, after spending a little bit more than a week in Laos, I have to don my mythbuster hat and proclaim the "wonderfully friendly" Laos to be a pile of horseshit! I do NOT find people more friendly here than anywhere else in the world. On the contrary, people tend to be rude and grumpy when you want to do business with them. Take this piece of shit ... read more

(Day 230 on the road)Wow, I have just bought a motorbike here in Laos and will be riding across the country for the next month or so - I am extremely excited! Actually, we have bought three bikes, as it is three of us: Karen, Harriet and me. Karen and I had been travelling together twice in China, and Harriet and I climbed Hua Shan together and did a Yangtze river cruise back in June. Whilst I travelled in Japan and Korea, they met and went to explore Vietnam and Cambodia. Now, we found ourselves to be in Laos at the same time, so we decided to team up and meet here in Savannakhet. To get to Savannakhet from Vientiane, I took a bus. As there are absolutely no trains in Laos, the decision was an ... read more

Where did everybody go? hello.........hello.... No folk around here!! Only overgrown weeds and stray dogs.!! the dogs are so relaxed here you can walk past a pack late at night and not even hear a wimper.! Welcome to Savannakhet the very quiet river front town....... Nic - Just a short stop here to take in the relaxed atmosphere and marvel at the crumbling old French buildings left over from years gone by! The perfect place for a sunset beer with the locals on the banks of the Mekong and watch the elders playing "patang" (just like the french Boules/Patanq....reminded me of many a childhood holiday...decided to give the playing a miss though as a bit out of practice these days!) Dan - Hunger can make a man very crazy indeed..........but fortunately I've never been in that ... read more

PART TWO So this part covers Laos. I've been here three weeks now, so it's a looong story. So we slept one night at the border still in Thailand: Chiang Khong. We had our last nice meal, because I have to admit, if Thailand is good for something, it must be the food. It's delicious! The next day, we took the boat over the mekong (5 minutes) to Houei Xai. Apparently they still love the French after the colonisation because french people pay 30 USD for their visa and poor Belgians pay 35 USD! After that we took a hobbly-bobbly bus through the Northern mountains to reach Luang Nam tha in six hours. On the way, we suddenly stopped in the middle of nowhere. People got out of the bus. We didn't really know what happend... ... read more

The thing about writing a blog is how to go about doing it...some people painstakingly print out all their work on notes and then put it together when they get to an internet cafe, but I prefer to get it all out while I am sitting here...this makes for some lost memories, and things I realize I should have mentioned, but I like the stress of getting it all out without spending a fortune... Presently I am sitting in sticky HOT Vietnam, in the 4th largest city, Danang...I am surrounded by boys/men standing behind me and sitting on either sides screaming at computer screens filled with dance dance revolution, war and soccer games, pounding music, cigarette smoke, and the sound of horns blasting right outside...it is 8:30 at night and I am sweating...we arrived here in ... read more

Savannakhet is a medium-size urban town of about 50,000 with the feel of a place that was once more elegant and important than it is now. During French colonial days it was the center of commerce for southern Laos. Savannakhet is set on the Mekong River, and the county of Thailand can clearly be viewed, looking like the future, not 500 feet across the river. Unlike in Luang Prabang, Savannakhet’s many gorgeous colonial style buildings are being allowed to disintegrate. Reminds me of the photos I’ve seen of bombed out buildings in Europe after WW2. These elegant buildings, once lived in by the very rich or governors or ambassadors are now dilapidated: all the paint peeled off, the cement crumbling, big yards full of weeds and cows, and Lao families living inside. Many newer homes and ... read more

Not much to report on Vientiane to be honest. It's not that it's not a nice place, it's just after seeing Luang Prabang and staying in a wonderful little guesthouse there, it falls by wayside for comparison for both sights and living arrangements. We stayed in a dank little cell for three nights, and one of the beds had bugs crawling all over it. Rather disgusting; and the Lonely Planet recommended it as "clean". Bollocks. Mixay Guesthouse it was called. However, it can do what it wants becasue Vientiane participates in "Capital City Syndrome" - everything costs a lot for shit. It also has a budget accommodation problem: case and point; three girls laid asleep with their bags at 6am outside the hostel next to ours simply because there wasn't any rooms available. We didn't do ... read more

1- People do actually wash in the river and even manage to do this with their clothes on.. 2- Laos needs even more bargaining skills and even when you think you actually got it your way you still realise later on that you still paid too much... - bummer! 3- Washing machines are scarce and lately we have been washing all our clothes by hand... squatting in the shower with water everywhere and raw knuckles from scrubbing... Backpacking is fun right! 4- Lao people can party hard with lots of Beer Lao and Opium pipes but at 10pm the music is off and they all get going again at 5am the next morning like nothing happened.. 5- All kids have snot on their noses and none of them wear 'pampers'...
