We are hurtling to the airport on the 16.40 Narita Express, Tuesday afternoon in Tokyo blurring by. We missed all this with our late night arrival. The darkness from two weeks ago is filled with city and suburbs. The train line is part of life with no buffer zone between track and buildings to speak of. They don't have the luxury of space we take for granted back home. The houses get bigger and the apartment blocks fewer as we get closer to Narita. Space is still at a premium with car pack stackers still common. Rice paddies and bamboo forests now surround the houses and people go about their daily lives. I see a farmer walking on the ridge between two paddies with his dog in tow and children, finished school for the day are ... read more

On the shinkansen from Kyoto to Tokyo today. This train is even faster than the Thunderbird from Kanazawa. Yet still not the fastest. The Japan Rail Pass doesn't allow for using the Nozomi and I can only imagine the standard and speed of those premium trains. The Hikari is going seriously fast! 450kms in 2 hours 40 minutes to Tokyo, with half a dozen stops along the way. And what a way to travel! We collected an array of delicious lunch items from the subterranean department store at Kyoto Station and decide to wing it in the unreserved carraige for our last Shinkansen of the trip. I instruct Milla to weave in between the boarding passengers and get us some good seats together. In her determination she pushes in front of the orderly queue as soon ... read more

We took a rest day yesterday- what better way to begin the new year than by sleeping in, eating Japanese 2 minutes noodles and watching TV. Japanese television is very different. It may be the language barrier, by I don't quite understand what the genres of their shows are- many shows seem to be comedy/ drama/ game show? They televised an eating contest between Japan and America one afternoon. It wasn't long before cabin fever hit (the hotel room is smaller than our bedroom at home in all its entireity. We decided to walk down to the entertainment suburb of Kabukicho. Kabakicho is flooded with lights sounds and people. When the 'little green man' flashes everyone crosses in any direction. We came across a British pub and decided to have a pint. The atmosphere was very ... read more

Today we tackled the busy shopping district of Shibuya. Even the train to get there was packed. Disembarking from the platform, we were overwhelmed by the noisy skyscrapers that streched more miles. As we waited to cross the famous Shibuya crossing, James spotted some people racing Go Karts in the street in Mario Kart costumes. When the little green man began to flash, it was almost impossible to cross the street in time, as we were engulfed in a sea of people. In Shibuya, we stumbled upon a cool little book and entertainment shop. Here you could buy classic books such as 'Where's Wally?' in Japanese. I took sone time to look at the music section and their wide range of J-Pop. I opted to get the CD- 'Uver-World Progultion.' Sounds deep right? Plus the cover ... read more

Sayonora Japan, it's been amazing. Lufthansa....we need to have words.... What better way to start the last day than with being unable to find the restaurant we wanted to find. If there's one thing I'd change about Japan it's making places easier to find. Most roads don't have names, numbers are all over the shop and not a lot makes sense, including the maps. Maybe it's all part of what makes Japan Japan though but when you're carrying a rucksack and a backpack it ain't much fun. We did find a nice restaurant to have our last meal in though nonetheless. We sat at a table and ordered our food from a screen. No sushi this time but a variety of dishes for a few quid each. It was all good and we were still trying ... read more

No rest for the weary despite only walking nine miles round Ueno and Shibuya in Tokyo We both admitted today that we are a tad knackered. With almost two weeks of amazing things done, seen and experienced we have hardly stopped to rest and recuperate. I think we've walked over 8 miles every day, which, considering we've taken loads of public transport is quite a lot. Maybe next time we'll factor in a day's rest somewhere....okay maybe half a day.....an hour at least.....maybe.... So, last day, worn out....and we have lots to do of course! I reckon we could come back to Japan many more times and see all new things and not be bored. And probably not have a rest either... First stop today was the Tokyo Skytree tower as the weather was better than ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! This morning I said my goodbyes to Ryosuke and thanked him for his kind hospitality, I've had an absolute blast the two evenings that I've spent with him. Since he'll be busy for tonight I'll instead stay my last night in Tokyo with a German guy, Christian, who lives in Minato. That will actually be very convenient for me since that's the part of Tokyo where I'll be spending tomorrow before I go to Shizuoka. Anyway, for today I began by going to Shibuya, primarily to visit Meiji Jingū, but also to see the area in general as it's a very famous part of Tokyo. As I came to Shibuya Eki I found myself in one of the busiest transport hub in the world with an average of 2.4 million travellers every ... read more

So for those keeping score I'm in Japan. Last week my friend Craig and I flew to Tokyo to meet another friend Conner and his bud Matt. This is the first part of our Japan, China, and North Korea trip. Anyways, it's been 5 days in Japan now and it's very different than I had expected. Japan just doesn't feel like Asia at all. Having been to SE Asia Japan just seems soft. It's no different than any other western city except there are 37 million Japanese people in the greater Tokyo area... And that's without any exageration. So as of now we've been doing proper tourist things. Plus consuming lots of alcohol from the 7/11, Family mart, and Lawson convenience stores - which might be a faux pas to drink on the street or trains ... read more

Hi friends!! So I just realized that my last two posts have been filled with crazy wild adventures around Tokyo, so I wanted to make a more low-key post about what my 起臥(kiga--daily life) in Japan is like. :) 朝(Asa--Morning) Everyday I wake up at 7am (Mom, aren't you proud of me??) and start my morning routine. My older host brother and I are the only two in the family who shower in the morning, but because I normally wake up earlier than him I get the shower first. In Japan, people normally shower and bathe at night, and having an actual shower in the house is super uncommon. The toilet and bath are in two separate rooms, so you don't have to worry about waiting for someone to get out of the bathroom if you ... read more
