I wrote this group of blogs on myspace after I got back from Japan in the summer of 2007. Enjoy! Sunday, September 02, 2007 Tokyo 1 Hi all, So, I was debating if I was going to write any blogs about my Japan trip, mostly because we saw so much, and I'm not able to get into too much detail about it, or it'd just be a lot of work, but hell with it. Here we go. I flew standby to Tokyo and back, and about a week before we left I started getting real nervous because the flights were very oversold, and United, who I was flying on, sent out a memo to employees saying not to non-rev to Japan because employees were getting stuck there. One woman was stuck in Tokyo for 10 days! ... read more

Living with a boy had all but killed my shopping instinct. Usually shopping trips with George involve the following: Him: "You know you should let me pick your clothes. I think I know what suits you better." Me: insulted but sensing the opportunity to buy pretty new things "OK, lets go shopping" At the store changing rooms: Me: "Ok, how does this look" Him: ... ... ... (he's waiting impatiently on the bench outside the shop, having got bored after only 10 minutes) So shopping doesn't usually have a place on my holiday itinerary. But shopping in Tokyo with Kimberly was awesome. It seems the Japanese love to shop - the stores were packed and there were lines down the street waiting for new shops to open. You wouldn't guess there was a recession. We wandered ... read more

In the evening, Masuo hosted a party at his apartment. The guests were mostly university friends, International Relations grad students I think. They were kind enough to attempt conversation with me, and I was lucky a couple of them spoke very good English. I tried to tell them a little about New Zealand, and they enjoyed the New Zealand wine I'd brought with me. I learned that when drinking in Japan, you should keep an eye on your friends' glasses and make sure they are always topped up. Likewise, it's rude to pour your own drink, even if you've just poured your friend one. But it was nice to see that certain customs are universal - students everywhere drink a LOT. The Tokyo Metro finishes just after midnight, even on Saturdays. So if you go out ... read more

I believe I have some catching up to do. Breaking this up to limit the pictures per entry... mind is a bit hazy still from Jet Lag, consider yourself warned! Wednesday we spent out checking the two "Fashionable" areas, Shibuya and Harajuku. Ended up having a pretty good time checking out the stores and such in the 109 Building (bought a T-Shirt I liked) before heading over to Harajuku. Checked out an extremely high end shopping mall, as well as some flagship stores for Tokyo like Nike and some other Japan specific places. The evening we all met up with Jason, another friend of Aaron's, and checked out a few of the bars in Shinjuku. On Thursday my original plan was to take the Shinkansen to Kyoto or some such place while the other guys checked ... read more

Hi evrybody! We slept in this morning after a full night in Kibukicho last night and stopping random people on the street to take excited pictures with at 3 in the morning. We left Hotel Nuts!!! this morning and walked a few miles down to Aoyama where we bought cheap boxed lunches from a guy on the street. It consisted of flavored toilet paper and some nuts and screws topped with soy sauce out da ass. It was HELLAgood. OK actually it was usual chicken and some good sauce with pickles and rice and stuff. We then walked over to Yoyogi Park where the Meiji Shrine, 100,000 trees and huge ass crows were. The Meiji Shrine was peaceful but not exactly what we expected. It was a pond with mutant huge goldfish and cool turtles, an ... read more

Night Shibuya is an amazing part of town. The moment i get out of the station I am in absolutle love! - The place is feckin' huge!...The shops are huge, the streets are huge, the crossings are huge and the buildings are huge. It is everything i imagined Tokyo would be. I potter around for a while, i buy some donuts, look in the shops, buy a few bits for friends (Sandy I got you some amazing socks girl!), take in the sights and just generally killing time until i have to meet Tomoka @ 10pm for the Acid Techno party at Amrax Club. Amrax After yet another hour of getting lost around the worlds biggest train station (or at least the biggest i have been) I manage to meet Tomoka and head off to Amrax. ... read more

Great night last night, and I was able to wake up and see the am. Not bad work for a saturday. Went early clubbing in Shibuya last night with Shack and Alia and some Japanese DJs that they knew. Met the infamous DJ Aso who is drunk 24/7 but can get you into places for cheap and on guest lists. There were a few more DJs that Shack had me before. The club was 5-9, morning for most club goers. Worked out for me because there was another round at 10:30 that I had been invited to so when I left the house I was planning on doing both. First club was small, nice. I like hte smaller venues which is why I've been attracted to bars more and more. You can't talk to people all ... read more

Meiji Shrine - Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan After visiting the Japanese Sword Museum, I made my way west to the Meiji Shrine. Although it was a cold and rainy day, the trees here kept me pretty dry and the walk helped warm me up. There weren't many people walking about the park grounds so it was very peaceful. Even with the crumby weather, the park was very pleasant and I can only imagine it being very pretty is the spring time when the trees are in bloom. Meiji Shrine (明治神宮, Meiji Jingū), located in Shibuya, Tokyo, is the Shinto shrine that is dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shōken. When Emperor Meiji died in 1912 and Empress Shōken in 1914, the Japanese people wished to pay their respects to the two ... read more

After a very entertaining two days in Akihabara we moved to another neighborhood in Tokyo called Shibuya. This area is known for its shopping, restaurants and "Love hotels" (which me and Ryan found out the hard way). But its most famous sight must be the Shibuya Crossing. It is one of the most photographed places in Tokyo with a hug amount of people crossing diagonal as well as the the common horizontal and vertical manner. This area is also everything Times Square wishes it was - there are more huge screens than anywhere else in the world. We took the metro from Akihabara to Shibuya which was quite easy after a look at the map. Be warned though as some of the Metro stations in Tokyo are signed in English and other parts are not, so ... read more
