We always knew we wanted to spend the last part of our trip on a beach, so that we could go home with good tans and feel relaxed, and since we decided a few weeks back to make Indonesia our last country, we couldn't think of a better place in the sun to end our beach time than the beautiful Gili islands. Once we managed to tear ourselves away from lovely Ubud and got a good deal on tickets for the fast boat, which was very smooth, we arrived on Gili Trawangan, the biggest of the three Gili islands (although it is only 7km around the whole island so still very small). As soon as we got off the boat and saw the crystal clear waters and white sand, we remembered just how much we had ... read more

23 May - Gili Air I had my alarm set for super early this morning , so by 7am I was at breakfast and by quarter past I was on my way to do a loop of the island, the plan being to try to avoid the stifling heat that would come later in the morning. I headed off to the east initially, an anti clockwise loop of the island. Stopped at a small cafe in the Far East/north side of the island for a fresh juice and a break before continuing my stroll, taking lots of photos along the way and even going for a quick dip, well, kind of before I realized I was just being belted with coral and harsh sand on the north/ north west side of the island! Continuing around, I ... read more

21 May - Senggigi Bit of a sleep in this morning before heading to breakfast at about 8:30am. Then it was a stroll down through the art market and the other shops before getting coffee/juice at a cafe and then I wandered back to the hotel around midday. From there it was well and truly pool time, which is essentially what I did for the rest of the afternoon. Reading a book, regular swims and generally lazing about. Around mid afternoon or so I added a beer to the mix, then at a bit after 4pm, Christina arrived back from her two day hike looking pretty exhausted. Around 5pm, we wandered down into town and I picked up my laundry. From there it was back to the hotel to shower (our water had been off some ... read more

Christina was up and off early to climb Mt Ringani for two days so I also woke early but tried to nap for a bit longer with little success. Headed down to breakfast and to use the wifi at around 8am, and we let Senaru a little after 9:15am. Relatively short drive today to Senggigi at about two and a half hours. Stopped once for a photo opp looking over the three Gili Islands. Into Senggigi at a bit before midday and checked in. Then it was time to gather up my laundry and Grant and I headed off for a walk and lunch, with me dropping some laundry off on the way. Had lunch at a cafe that did both Indonesian and western food. I liked the sound of the Crazy Chicken despite it being ... read more

I decided to try to wake this morning to see my first Indonesian sunrise, so I was up a little before 6am. And a lovely sunrise it was. Again, it was a fairly noisy place with animals etc so I don't think I would have slept much past that anyway! The sunrise was very pretty, lots of reds and oranges and yellow. Worth getting up for, seeing the sun rise over the ocean and the valley more so. After watching the sunrise it was back to the room for a shower and to get ready to head out on a six hour trek. Breakfast was a banana pancake with condensed milk which made a nice change from the eggs I have been having every day for the last week. I am over eggs, and over rice ... read more

Travel day today. Up early to have a 7am breakfast for a 7:30am departure. Short stroll to the ferry (porter took our bags for grab total of $1.50) where we eventually got on and secured an area for the four of us. Technically the ferry trip was four hours. That was fairly accurate, we probably departed at around 8:30am and got into Lombok at 12:30pm. The problem was that there seemed to be no where for the ferry to pull up and off load, meaning that we sat on the ferry for about another two hours. Not what any of us wanted nor needed! So at around 2pm or just after we exited the ferry and headed towards the biggest shopping mall on Lombok for lunch and shopping. Grabbed Indonesian take aw... read more

We could not stay at Mahamaya forever, and so we spent our next 5 days on Gili Meno on the "busier" side of the island, at Tropical Hideaways, a sweet little cluster of bungalows with a pretty garden and a pool. The only way to get there in one go without sweltering in the heat was to hire a horse buggy (there are no cars or mopeds on the island, and no roads, only narrow dirt trails. We had been looking forward to riding one, but of course, I had managed to forget how allergic √ėyvind is to horses, and he had forgotten to remind me, so by the end of the 5-minute ride he was ready to lie down and close his puffy eyes... This is a perfect chance to put Gili Meno in perspective. ... read more

This entry has been a long time coming, but as we are now back in Norway, beginning to write it means we will soon be publishing our last blog for this trip of ours, and that will definitely mark the beginning of a new reality. But for now, let us dream back to Indonesia.Having successfully sold our car for asking price (who gets that lucky????) and feeling slightly flush again, we decided to round off our trip with a stay in Indonesia. We had originally hoped to get to New Zealand, but our available funds would have meant having to travel as roughly and cheaply as we had been doing in Australia, and, to be honest, we were a bit tired. Also, we wanted to be able to DO things in New Zealand, and relax and ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Lombok » Gili Air April 24th 2013

Gili islands are tiny islands close to Lombok, Indonesia. It might sound a little boring now after all the other places we loved, but Gili Air is an absolute paradise, a perfect place for holidays and a perfect place to settle down and stay forever (we wish). First we spent a few days on quite touristy Gili Trawangan and did lots and lots of snorkelling and it was just amazing, white beaches and the most blue sea and so many fish swimming all around us. But at the end of the day, Gili T is a bit too touristy and a bit too overcrowded and there is too many pubs and parties for such a small island so we decided to get the short 15 minute boat over to Gili Air which we heard was a ... read more

From Ubud, I had planned to go to Lombok (, an island just to the east of Bali and so I booked a shuttle bus and boat to get there, for 250.000 IDR (I booked it with Ketut, the woman who ran the hostel I was staying in). It took about 1 hour to get to the small harbour in Sanur, get the ticket and then 1 hour ride on the fast boat (a ferry takes about 5 hours, but it's cheaper). The boat stopped in all 3 Gili Islands (Trawangan, Meno and Air) and then stopped in Lombok ( In Lombok, I was the only person disembarking and then had to negotiate a taxi to get to Senggigi, a popular beach in Lombok and where I thought I had the best chance to book other ... read more
