"Eh mate! You lost weight bro!" que me dira Angeli, la massothérapeute que j'avais prit l'habitude d'aller voir sur Legian Road. Normal ça. C'est ce que ça fait donc de manger trop souvent du riz et des nouilles dans cette chaleur tropicale... et puis de transpirer sa vie à chaque respiration aussi. Comme il me reste plus ou moins une semaine en Indonésie, je décide de faire un dernier grand saut et de ... read more

Still barely able to walk post Rinjani it's time to see a bit at sea level. While I was trekking Geoff had gotten in touch with a driver called Agung who had taken him to the Rinjani National Park for the day. They stopped frequently to birdwatch and visited the waterfall. Geoff enjoyed it but didn't see much in the way of birdlife. Agung had asked if we were planning on any trips to the Gili Islands and suggested that we may be interested in some of the smaller islands that were quieter than the popular, well known ones- Trawangan, Air and Meno. We did want to do a day trip but hadn't really thought it through to which ones/what format, etc. This kind of sealed it - we decided that would be a a good ... read more

One thing I really wanted to do on this trip to Lombok was to climb Mt Rinjani. I first saw Mt Rinjani in 2012 from the summit of Mt Agung in Bali, it was peeking out of the clouds and from then on it was on my list. Rinjani is the second highest volcanic peak in Indonesia at 3726m and has a 6 km x 8.5 km caldera. Segara Anak, the crater lake partially fills the caldera with a small volcano (Gunung Barujari) contained inside that again. Other interesting scientific facts can be read on the link below. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Rinjani So....having booked the flights without really doing any homework I found out that the Rinjani National Park is closed in March due to the wet season. Damn.... However, after reading through as many trip reports/reviews that I ... read more

We took a weeks break in Lombok March 2 - 9. Primary purpose for trip was to relax in a very good hotel. Flights - Perth/Lombok/Perth with Jetstar. Direct flights 3hrs 40 mins Cost - $322 pp Accommodation - Sudamala Sengiggi http://www.sudamalaresorts.com/senggigi Sudamala was truly fantastic. We booked all 7 nights here and after day 1 we were wishing it were for longer. Communication- We booked Sudamala directly by email and the communications pre-departure were excellent- clear and timely. We opted for a package- pool villa, breakfasts, 1 dinner, 2 massages and return airport transfers and negotiated a good price (price we got was a lot better than the published offer on their website). We paid 50% deposit via credit card pre departure. Arrival- Our driver, Zul, collected us. He is a great ambassador for th ... read more

Yesterday was very lazy. We walked towards the northern end of the island (took about 10 minutes) to the beach opposite the Horizontal Hotel, where our hotel said the best snorkelling was to be had. There were some very comfortable-looking sunbeds in front of a beach restaurant called Gili Café (wifi worked fabulously on the beach too) and we could use them for free if we bought drinks, lunch etc. No problem with this plan, except that the reef was quite dead there and so we had to walk a little bit further north, then drift down with the current. They are trying to encourage new coral growth with sunken metal cages through which an electric current is passed, which speeds the process up X4. Hothot day reading and swimming, fantastic views to Gili Meno, and ... read more

ATM info Part 2! If you do as I did and forget to take your card out it will be eaten by the machine, but do not panic! If you are sure this has happened, you can go into the bank (if it is attached to one) and they will open the machine for you and give it back. It won’t be cancelled. Of course, not a good idea if you think someone has taken it, although a UK debit card isn’t really any use to anyone. Sam still can’t remember her number ( and has been giving herself a hard time about it), and as the bank has reset it twice now she is all out of attempts and it is dead! She still knows the numbers, but not the order……. Ditto her credit card. ... read more

Tip: Do - go snorkelling Don't - attempt to find a place to swim. A wasted effort as the island is surrounded by coral! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When we got off the speed boat onto Gilli T we thought... yes - no cars or mopeds! The best way to travel is on foot or in our case, we hired bicycles. Again, we booked our accommodation on the last night in Uluwatu using booking.com - we spent the first two nights on the party side of the island (east) in a homestay. We scoped the island out and decided to try staying the last two nights on the quiet side (west - aka sunset beach). We went for dinner in Samba on our first evening, they did a lovely Indonesian noodle soup - Sean had chicken satay and nasi ... read more

We spent the first two nights in Tugu hotel north of the island. Very nice, antique laden hotel with incredible food. After day two I was a little bored, it's off the beaten track and you don't get a feel of the island staying here. However, the food was to die for - thank you London foodie for the recommendation and thanks Kate for sending on the article. When we left the hotel the staff (who were the nicest people on the planet) saw us off in style. We were given a lovely terracotta ash-tray and when we turned around to wave goodbye from the taxi, we found them standing in the driveway, waving little British flags at us! Suddenly felt like how the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge must feel when they campaign around the ... read more

Today we went on a snorkelling trip around the islands. This is about the strenuous thing we've done since being here. We had 3 separate sessions of the boat and saw lots of colourful fish although the reef itself wasn't too colourful. We also some turtles swimming under water which made it quite special. At lunch the girls ordered a potato salad that took the best part of an hour to arrive and when it did finally get to the table it was just a plate of boiled potatoes with some herbs sprinkled on them... Apparently this is an Indonesian version of a potato salad. We were tired after the snorkelling so we went back to the pool for a short rest before going out some drinks. It was an an early night though as the ... read more
