23 May - Gili Air
I had my alarm set for super early this morning , so by 7am I was at breakfast and by quarter past I was on my way to do a loop of the island, the plan being to try to avoid the stifling heat that would come later in the morning.
I headed off to the east initially, an anti clockwise loop of the island. Stopped at a small cafe in the Far East/north side of the island for a fresh juice and a break before continuing my stroll, taking lots of photos along the way and even going for a quick dip, well, kind of before I realized I was just being belted with coral and harsh sand on the north/ north west side of the island!
Continuing around, I eventually came to the west side where I again stopped, but this time for a good 40 minutes or so. I tried to order a coconut or juice but the electricity was off which made that difficult, so ended up having a so drink instead. Sat there for a while chilling with my book, before continuing the walk back to the hotel,
getting back at around 10am or so.
Technically the walk is about an hour to an hour and a half, but I treated it as a stroll, and it was already stinking hot and humid by the time I got back to the hotel.
Then it was two hours of quality pool time before Grant and I headed off to grab some lunch down on the east side. I had fish n chips, then afterwards we wandered further down and grabbed a Bintang while watching the rain come across from Lombok, although we only got a bit of drizzle.
Also watched some of the locals unload their order of stock from a boat - having to carry 10l bottles of water on their head as they waded through waist deep water. As the tide receded, the job seemed to get a little easier, but it probably took them two hours to unload the boat with four of them.
Then it was back to the hotel for another dip in the pool before the three of us headed out to dinner (this time on the east coast) at around 5:30 or so.
Found ourselves at A
place called Scallywags which was right on the beach, at a table and chair in the sand, but really nice and soft sand. The place is apparently run/owned by Aussies. Had a drink and snacks to start with as we were still fairly early. Then when they started to fire up the outdoor BBQs we ordered dinner.
I got the vege kebab with salad and a baked potato. Way too much food but very tasty. After dinner it was down to one of the other cares for a quick drink sitting and watching the waves and boats in the dark, before strolling back to the hotel.
24 May - Gili Air
Tried to sleep in this morning but was still up by about 7:30 or so. Off to breakfast and then it was time to hit the ATM and get a pedicure. Pedicure took a while, she was very thorough.
I went with a bright blue polish, something I would never normally do! From there my plan had been to head back to the hotel and chill by the pool with a book. But the pool had been taken over by a wedding party and guests.
So after chilling for a while watching some little kittens play outside of the room, Grant and I ended up heading to the east beach just after midday. Sought shade on the beach, grabbed some food and a cold drink and chilled for the next couple of hours. I even went swimming briefly, more to say I had and to cool off slightly since the humidity is still killing me.
Then it was back to the room where I had a quick (cold) shower and changed. It was then that Gede wandered past to say hello and Cristina also got back so the four of us headed to the west side of the island to grab a drink and watch the sunset.
The sunset ended up being slightly disappointing due to the cloud cover but there were some pretty pinks and purples in the sky anyway. Then the four of us wandered towards to east beach, noting on the way that the power on the island seemed to have gone off for those places without generators.
Gede headed off in another direction towards the north and the three of us continued to seek out somewhere that
had power and served food.
We ended up eating at a place called the Beach Club which have a nightly movie screening. Lorax 3D was on which we caught the end of while waiting for dinner, which took more than 30 minutes to arrive! Most likely due to some power issues in the kitchen at a guess. We also managed to catch an old episode of the Simpsons before heading back for an early night.
