Maandag;Tempeldag. Vanuit Solo rijden we richting Yogjakarta.

YOGYAKARTA, JAVA To say that we didn't do the city of Yogyakarta justice would be an understatement. We were just unlucky that a few minor thing happened that made our stay less than perfect. We flew there from KL on a cheapie Air Asia flight without problem. We arrived in the tiny airport and got 2 local buses to the 'backpacker' rabbit warren of Sosrowijayan Road (known as Sosro). Found a very nice family run losman (guesthouse) and made a few friends. Managed to avoid being hassled into buying overpriced Batik art by the many touts. Browsed the tatty market along Malioboro Road. Good start. Next day we hired a scooter, bought a map and Dee braved the crazy traffic to drive to the famous Buddhist temple Borobudur, about 40km away. The pollution on the roads ... read more

Last week I stayed in Yogyakarta and found a wonderful place to have the best coffee I have tasted in Indonesia: Paris Apparently they specialize in Italian and local brand Coffees. However, they also served delightful meals (Breakfast, Lunch and Asian/European style dinner) for an affordable price. During the World Championship Soccer they will have Big Screen live soccer broadcasting. I will surely visit this place again end June/July. I would say if you miss a good cup of coffee and some good food and you are staying a few days in Yogyakarta visit Paris Coffee & Restaurant . Jl. Parangtritis 54. Tel: (0274) 384296.

I read 1 of vagabonding article by Lavinia Spalding, she wrote a phrase " Don't think about it too much. Don't make pro and con lists. Pro and con lists are nothing but trouble. If you think about it too much, you'll just end up staying home and then someday you'll be telling your grandchildren ". This will motivate me since I just decide to quit my job and find out what world can offer me from now. Next destination, I'm heading to Jogjakarta, lack of time do to research, so I just go with a flow. I hope there's not much different between Jakarta and Jogjakarta, because I have been to Jakarta before. Landed at 11am, I catch Trans Jogja ( very efficient and reliable public transport ) that only cost Rp3,000 to any ... read more

Yogyakarta-The locals say if you have not visited Yogyakarta you have not visited Java and Indonesia for that matter. The largest and in my opinion the most elaborate Bhuddist Stupa called Borobudur, the Hindu Prambanan Temple complex, and of course the very modest palace of the Sultan of Yogyakarta. I arranged a driver and a private guide thru Yogi tous, and I have to say they were the best guides. Beside having a thorough knowledge of the area, they both spoke English and French fluently. I asked them to also take me to a Javanese Puppet maker, which they did. Igt was an old Javanese house and it was a mother and daughter business. I loved their work and bought a pair of puppets of Rama and Sita. I hope you like the pictures... M p.s.. ... read more

Flying into Yogyakarta we had no expectations, for the first time we were going somewhere Paul hasn't been before! Yoggy is a hugh city and compared to Singapore is very dusty but our spirits soon perked up when we found a hotel to stay in.....Air con, ensuite, tv with swimming pool and breakfast included all for about 12pounds total! What more could we ask for! After a day of wondering around the area and trying their Satay (very nice!) we thought it was about time for some cultural viewing and so went to a performance of ramayan traditional dance...there was a vague storyline to it but god knows what it was! Then to Sarah's horror we decided to go to Borobudur, the buddhist temple to see when in Indonesia, which is best viewed at sunrise which ... read more

Funny place Indonesia. Unlike anywhere I've been so far, this country continues to defy my expectations. Yogyakarta is well and truly on the tourist map, so I expected it to be trashy and full of insistent batik salesmen etc and basically a real pain in the arse. Admittedly I'd been advised to stay in the Prawirotawan area rather than in the main backpacker area near the train station, and I didn't venture north of the Kraton to where the bulk of the hard sell occurs, but aside from the usual becak drivers wanting fares I found Yogya hassle free. Prawirotawan is quiet, and has a great local market at the corner of Jl Parangritis. There's a high speed internet cafe nearby, and a surplus of good local food outlets, as well as some higher class ... read more

El viaje ... read more
