Finally had to leave the island paradise that is Bali to meet friends YK and X in Yogya back on Java, 1h flight from Denpasar. Stayed at Wisma Ary's, nice place which checked all the boxes -- A/C, hot water, attached bath and in-room wi-fi! (albeit extremely patchy!)... read more

The school trip…. For years and years I’ve been travelling – either alone or with a friend. I like both. I like touring with a good travel companion, but I also relish being on the road independently. But, once or twice a year, I hit the road with a large number of middle school students. This is a whole different style of travel all together! The opportunity to take extended school trips to interesting places was one of the things I most looked forward to when I decided to teach overseas. First of all, I love all travel and especially free travel. Second, I would not have to worry about accommodation, transportation or meals – it would all be arranged for me. Third, I would get to take young people to see some wonderful sites and ... read more

Jogjakarta or Yogjakarta or Jogyakarta or Yogyakarta or Jogja or Yogja or Jogya or Yogya are meaning the same city on Jawa Island. A pretty and crowded city. Our losmen (=small hotel) was very centrally situated. We reached Jogya interests by tricycles easily; Sultan’s Palace, Bird Market, University and famous Malioboro Street for shopping. One day we took a Borobudur and Prambanan Tour. Borobudur said to be the largest Budha Temple and Prambanan the tallest Hindu Temple and both are world Herritage. We enjoyed the city in all aspects, specially massages we took in Inna Garuda Hotel and other places. On 24th March we took a night train to Jakarta to fly to Phuket. Now we are spending impressive days in Phuket . Stay Best.... read more

"The only thing I think I like better than talking about food is eating." (Don DeLillo) It would be near impossible to condense the diversity of Indonesia's cuisine into one single blog, especially considering that I have only spent no more than four or five months in Indonesia over the course of my life. More than this, I have spent most of my time there on the main island of Java, not yet having traveled to Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi, Nusa Tengara or the Spice Islands to the far east. Nevertheless, I think I got some feel for some of the basics after three months sitting at the Indonesian table. Food is a big part of the language every culture speaks and as a visitor in a foreign country words for food are some of the most ... read more

We've been travelling for almost 5 months now and have managed to do this without loosing any of our belongings! So when we jumped out of the swimming pool in Kuta, got dried and jumped on the mini bus that was taking us west to Java we were a little upset when we realised that we'd left our swim suits at the pool drying :-( it's a little sad. We got on the bus in Kuta at 4pm and headed for Mount Bromo, which is a volcano on the east of Java. We arrived at 4am for the sunrise but had an hour walk to the actual rim of the crater. Because we again refused to pay to get on the back of a bike we decided to walk, we had a little map that said ... read more

It's fair to say that I won’t be trying that again! The day started pretty much as expected; I left the hostel at around 8am for my 9:30am return flight with Zest which was predictably delayed. But it didn’t matter. I had a load of time to kill until my next flight left at 5pm. Arriving once again to the domestic terminal at Manila I first had to get round to Terminal 3 using the free shuttle service. Then I waited and waited! Fortunately T3 is at least a slightly more entertaining Terminal with a decent selection of shops and restaurants to mosey around. The time slowly went by and I was finally able to check in for my AirPhil Express flight to Singapore. This is where it started to get a bit tight, I only ... read more

It's been over three weeks now since Bapak and Ibu Heru herded me into a taxi on the way to Yogyakarta International Airport. Jogja, as it is affectionately dubbed, was my home for three months until this past January. Although the time was very brief, I experienced so much that it felt like I was there for a lot longer. My original purpose for going, to learn enough Indonesian language to apply for microfinance jobs with American organizations, became overwhelmed by the vitality of being in a new and very richly endowed cultural milieu. I think Jogja is a very easy place to love although I admit I am generally underwhelmed by the level of infrastructure and living evironment of Indonesian cities. Jogja has all of the unpleasantries of most large Indonesian cities, horrible congestion, poverty ... read more
