So yesterday we woke up at 4:30am and drove to the Borbobudur Temple - the largest Buddhist temple in the world! Although our guide was really informative, there was such low energy that it was kind of hard to make sure his words didn't go in one ear and out the other. It's often compared to Ankor Wat in Cambodia, and even though this one is bigger and older, it doesn't have any of the enchanting romance that Ankor Wat does. There, it is overgrown with trees and in the middle of the jungle so you really have the sense that it was a long lost temple rediscovered. This one was restored with volcanic rock, and similar to the rest of the country we've seen, it kind of seems like a black void contrasting with a ... read more

So then.... onto Yogyakarta (pronounced Jog-ja-karta or Jog-ja for short): After a couple of minibus rides and an interesting train journey in business class, which had a toilet which was a hole in the floor of the train (to put busines class into perspective), we arrived in Yogya in time to have a swim, a bite to eat and an early night to prepare for the following morning activities. At 3:30am the wakeup call arrived and my room had somehow lost power at some point during the nigh. This made for an interesting half an hour getting ready in the dark. From the hotel we drove to a village where we had to climb a steep trail in the dark to the top of a mountain. At the top of the mountain we witnessed the most ... read more

By Polona Taking advice from fellow travelers, we decided that when arriving to Indonesia we would skip Jakarta and go straight Jogjakarta. We actually prepared this time and we decided it might also be a good opportunity to use the CouchSurfers site and see if we could stay with a local and see what life in Yogya is like for the people living there. This is how we came across Ganjar. He replied immediately and welcomed us to his home, saying he might not be able to dedicate that much time to us on account that he was getting married the week of our arrival. He also invited us to attend the wedding to experience what a traditional Javanese wedding is like. Of course we could not say no to that. We arrived to Jakarta in ... read more

My flight to Yogyakarta arrived at 8.30am and it wasn't long before I had collected my bag and cleared customs. I decided to take a taxi because it was less than $6, and it was only a 20 minute drive to the tourist area of Sosrowijayan Rd where I found a nice hotel with a very inviting swimming pool for $10 a night. The first thing that I noticed in Indonesia was that it was not nearly as hot and humid as Malaysia which was a great relief to me. That afternoon I went for a walk down Malioboro Rd which is the main road in the city. It didn't take too long before I started getting pissed off with what seemed like every fifth person in the street asking where I come from and wanting ... read more

Hello all from Indonesia!! Here is my blog about the beautiful islands of Java, Bali, Lombok and Gili Meno. On my first proper day in Indonesia we got on a train at around 9am to take us from Jakarta to Yogyakarta; where a lot of the famous temples are. Unfortunately it was a looooooooong train journey, 8 hours in total! Still, it meant we could sleep some, and get to know each other better (having only met each other the day before), and we made it fun by chatting, reading and mucking around. Got to Yogyakarta in the evening, so we just dumped our stuff and went out for dinner. A few people went out, but i headed back to the room so I'd be well rested for a full day of looking and walking around ... read more

We had about 5 or 6 days to explore Java and we were bound by the cities to where Air Asia flies. (One must only hear about Indonesian airlines having the absolute WORST safety rating in the world a handful of times before one will decided to not take a local airline whence flying from Bali to Java) Therefore, we were limited to exploring Yogyakarta (Jogja) and Jakarta. Which was all well and good since both of us had a peaked interest in seeing Borobudur, the largest Buddhist temple in Indonesia. Its only about 45 mins outside of Jogja, so a visit would be easy to do from the city. Jogja, incidentally, is also the Batik capital of Indonesia, which made it a great place to blow all our money and extra backpack space on gifts. ... read more

So I guess we have not really done any entries in Indonesia. Here is a recap: Bali- We arrived after 7 weeks in Australia and well felt a bit like we had landed in Australia. Don't think I ever need to return to Bali. Extremely touristic, beaches literally covered in trash and lots of Australian tourists in Beer Bintang tank tops. Not that there is anything wrong with any of that, just not my cup of tea. On one day we did manage to find a waterfall with no other Westerners and that was nice, but that was about it. Java- From Bali we took a mini-bus, then a ferry, then a bemo, then a bus, then a minibus to our first destination - Mt. Bromo or Gurung Bromo. Now that was amazing. We arrived as ... read more
