I departed Manila at 6:25 a.m. for a 1 hour and 40 minute flight to Hong Kong, and after only about 45 minutes on the ground in Hong Kong flew approximately 4 hour and 30 minute flight to Jakarta. Upong arriving at the aiport in Jakarta was met by a representative of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel where the conference I am attending will take place. I can honestly say I now know why the Ritz-Carlton has such an incredible reputation. I was greeted at the hotel, by name, and then walked through the lobby explaining how the hotel is layed out and then escorted directly to my room which is very spacious with great amenities. The check-in was done in my room to make things even easier. Once I was cleaned up and refreshed I went up ... read more

Geo: -6.18, 106.83Today there was nothing planned for me. It was Fletcher's last day of lecturing so I decided to set off on safari! Let me explain. From the window of my room on the 14th floor I have looked out each day over the busy road and the adjoining park. On the second morning I noticed amongst the trees the head of a giraffe. I wondered what he was doing there as there seemed to be nothing and noone around him.I felt rather sorry for him away from home and he just looked lonely. Today I decided to pay him a visit. I headed out about 10am, crossed the busy road and set out along the wide road that cuts through the park looking for an opening in the fences that surround the park. I came ... read more

Geo: -6.18, 106.83After the flurry of activity yesterday today was to be much quieter. The RDC driver, Tandi, was organised to pick me up at 10am and take me into the city to the two big shopping malls, Grand Indonesia and Plaza Indonesia. These are side by side near one of the main squares which contain the Welcome sculpture. They are also next to the Grand Hyatt. As usual Tandi was on time and he dropped me at the Grand Indonesia. This is very plush and modern with several storeys of the usual shops. I must admit I was not all that impressed by this one as it seemed to be very restricted in area and made me walk around in circles too much. That was the West Mall. The East Mall was much more negotiable. I ... read more

Geo: -6.18, 106.83The lovely people at the RDC organised a guide and driver today to take me to the main sights in Jakarta.Linho the guide and Tomas, the driver picked me up at 9am and we headed out into Jakarta morning traffic. This is a phenomenon in itself. Much like Egypt and some other Asian cities I have visited, the traffic seems a jumble of buses, cars and motor bikes all looking for the quickest way through. They push in, change lanes at a moment's notice but it all seems to work and apart from constant beeping of horns there a few, if any, accidents! Our first stop was the National Museum. Housed in a Neo-Classical Building, a wide variety of exhibits are on show. There is an ethnography section showing the many different ethnicities within the ... read more

Geo: -6.18, 106.83Day one of our Indonesian week saw us fly from Adelaide to Sydney to connect with our flight to Jakarta. In Sydney we had an hour's sojourn in the First Class Qantas Lounge where we had our sit down lunch;for me Warm Duck salad washed down with French champagne and a Tasmanian Reisling. Very nice. then on to a packed plane for the 7 hour flight. The entertainment system wasn't working but I read, dozed and did the crossword puzzles.Landing in Jakarta the humidity hit us as we left the plane.30 degrees and 90% humidity!. We were met by Aslan, and the driver Tandi for the 40 minute drive across the city to our hotel located near the Sports Stadium. They certainly go in for bright lights in this place. The traffic was heavy and ... read more

Geo: -6.18, 106.83My first full day in Jakarta proved to be a relaxing one. Fletcher left for his course at 8am and had to take the only adapter with him. Determined to buy another one and to do a bit of shopping I set out at 9am heading for the two large shopping malls that he had told me were behind the hotel. It was already steamy but very hazy so the large tower buildings loomed out of the mist. Walked along a very narrow and broken footpath, I passed some small street stalls and came to an imposing building, the Plaza Seneyan. Found out they did not open until 10am so had a coffee/carrot cake at a modern cafe nearby. Inside this mall could be anywhere in the world. The same shops, marble walls, just ... read more

So, I was actually only in Indonesia for about 50 hours, but I had enough random experiences that I could have written many more quick blurbs. However, for the sake of your attention span, here are four: Sunday Night Rave in Jakarta? Houston to Chicago to Hong Kong to Jakarta. That’s how I had to go to get there. Unfortunately, my luggage did not follow suit, so I arrived in Indonesia’s capital city of 12 million at midnight with the clothes on my back (and the extra set I had fortunately hand carried for fear of this happening). Sitting in the back of my car as we cruised through the steamy night en route to hotel, my body was starting to feel the effects of 30+ hours of travel; the body is tired, the mind is ... read more

As we were checking out we needed to pack again. We are really looking forward to having a whole week in the one place when we get to Rhodes and there weeks in Italy with no packing will be bliss. The hotel didn't expect us to leave until midday, so we took it easy for the morning. Toby spent sometime in bed reading the paper once he had returned from the gym and shocked Fiona and Harriet with his surprised yell when he realised there was a picture of us in the Jakarta Post. Apparently the girl and the policeman outside the mall yesterday was a protest and we were photographed walking past. There aren't many tourist sights in Jakarta but the shopping is a major attraction. One mall that was recommended for bargains is the ... read more
