We were packed up in good time, so we took the opportunity to print out Ed's new school forms, fill them in, photograph and email them to the school. Around 9.45 we took a taxi to a cafe called Yellow Deli for brunch. We'd renamed Hagrid's House given the quirky interior. Our train to Sydney was smooth and easy and we were at the airport by 2ish. We had $27 left in small notes and change and that was enough to get lunch for Cas, Ed and Hat, plus a bottle of red for the first few nights in Jakarta. It was a seven hour flight, of which about five hours were spent flying across Australia; it is an unbelievably large island. We were all tured when we got off the plane and queued up for ... read more

Tuesday 1st March 2016 We were sadly waving goodbye to Malaysia today, or at least a "see you later" as we plan to return in a months time with the hope of spotting some orangutans. We checked out of the hotel and took a taxi to the airport which was a short 15 minute drive away. The route we'd be taking to Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia would be Langkawi - Kuala Lumpur and Kuala Lumpur - Jakarta. The first leg of the journey went well and after a 1 hour flight we had landed in KL airport at midday where we would have a 7 hour wait for our connecting flight. We wandered through the airport looking in shops but spent most of our time using the free WIFI in Starbucks and backing up photos ... read more

The time has arrived as I undertake a half year overseas work placement in Indonesia. I will be posted to a factory in Cikarang, near Jakarta where I'll finally get my hands dirty on the shopfloor as a production engineer! As the departure date approached, I was filled with mixed feelings of slight apprehensiveness and inexorable excitement. Anxiety, as the near future is full of question marks: how is the environment like working in a foreign land; how will I be coping with a different lifestyle; how will I be managing relationships back home; how will things eventually pan out, etc. But more so, I look forward with much anticipation of the unknown: opportunities to develop personally, both in and out of work; chance to finally be on the ground, working in the factory which is ... read more

The room we stayed in at the fancy hotel had a single bed added in for me - it was right up against my Dads side of the bed. Flashes of childhood bedtimes were had for at least an hour while we threw pillows at each other, shone the adjustable light in each other's faces (while making goofy faces) and just generally giggled until tears streamed down our faces and Mom sternly told us to go to sleep. We were up early to take advantage of the incredible breakfast buffet set out by the Essence hotel in Hanoi. I stuffed myself (since I had a whole day of travel ahead and it was part of the room cost!) on all kinds of delicious Vietnamese foods. My last meal in Vietnam! Sad to see the end of ... read more

Al ... read more

At 12:30 we checked in at the Minangkabau International Airport in Padang (Sumatra) to catch our flight to Jakarta in Java. But first, we had to say goodbye to our bus driver Boy and busboy Andu, which both did a great job to drive us save through Sumatra. I would thank both man for helping us out. The last minutes that we spend on Sumatra, and it was time to go our second island that we would visit, Java. Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia and Java, and from Pedang we will fly directly to Jakarta, with Garuda Indonesia. The bus drove is quite in front of the departure hall, where we were able to do the check in. I had seat 33 J, and our flight was GA 165. I still had time to enjoy ... read more

I had heard from some other travellers that to spend one or two days in Jakarta was plenty, so this being my one and only day I headed out to try and find my way round. Walking to the end of the quiet street and turning left onto a very busy road - similar to a dual carriageway there was a market up the side of the pavement. Selling the usual phone accessories and fake tat I was more having to watch my step - the pavements are so dirty with a layer of wet mud across them, rubbish strewn everywhere and people sleeping among large rats running between the sewers ( which are open and producing a terrible smell.) Spotting a shopping mall I headed in for some fresh air and some breakfast. Soon after ... read more

One of the most populated cities in the world, Jakarta is an example of a clearly divided city. While the northern part of the city center, from the old town to the National Monument Park is inhabited by slums, dirt and chaos, the part south of the Park dominated by luxurious hotels and gigantic shopping malls, has a very different vibe. It is a huge city that has little respect for public transportation or its only valuable treasure - the old town Kota, with its splendid colonial heritage. Urbanism Although Jakarta was the capital of the Dutch East Indies, the area of the original city is very small and does not define its actual form. Just like in Bangkok there is no well defined center, and the so-called center is organized around the National Monument Monas. ... read more

After being dropped off at PDX at a time no one should be awake (thank you so much Jeremy); two layovers in San Francisco and Narita, Japan; five quality airplane meals; one crazy, unmetered taxi ride (we know, that could have been a mistake but it was actually like riding in a race car, and that's never bad) - we have finally made it to our hotel. Today we plan on exploring Jakarta and figuring out what Indonesian food entails. We will be here for the next three days trying to get our eyes used to the sunshine, the time change, and this somewhat refreshing humidity. Since not much has happened, the purpose of this entry to once again acquaint ourselves with how to use this site and to ensure the notifications work. If they don't ... read more

Daily life continues to putter along. I have loved riding my motorbike and it’s been holding out well, but I already had to fix a flat tire, get a tune up, and fix my lights. One of my friends here communicates to the mechanic on my behalf in these situations which has been super helpful! My volleyball team has continued to do very well. Before entering the championship games, we were undefeated and remained that way by earning first place in the league! I’m so proud of the girls and what they have accomplished – they have come a LONG way since we started working together a year ago. The season is not done yet as we have another major tournament coming up in about three weeks time. As a PE department we also hosted our ... read more
