If you're stuck in a short weekend in Jakarta and Saturated just watch cable tv in the hotel room and find a fairly quiet place, why not to visit the Ragunan Wildlife Park? In sunny Saturday march 12, 2011. I went to Ragunan zoo. Jakarta pride Wildlife Park has been established since 1864 on Cikini and moved to the Pasar Minggu district in 1966. Got more than 3122 kinds of animal collections from around the world. Some of them are threatened with extinction. Don't worry about getting lost if you have no idea about Jakarta. TransJakarta busway will deliver directly at the Ragunan zoo garden. Saturday was a good day to come to the Wildlife Park Ragunan. Not many passengers are crammed on the busway TransJ that led Ragunan. In addition to school children. Ragunan is ... read more

It took less than three hours for us to become millionaires. Arriving into Indonesia we excitedly withdrew 1.5 million rupiah from the ATM (just over £100) just to see what it felt like! Obviously we then had to spend most of it purchasing our visas, but they came as a cute sticker in our passports which was a first. After filling in more forms we got our bags and were herded out into transport cartel madness. Taxi drivers were trying to charge us 300,000 rupiah for the fifteen minute ride into the centre, which we knew was ridiculous. It was gone midnight and there were no public buses running, so we were at their mercy. Eventually a kind guy agreed to 100,000 so we were on our way. Our driver was really nice, he was actually ... read more

I made a short business trip earlier this month to Jakarta. The first time back after perhaps 10 years. Interestingly the city looked a lot the same - perhaps more shopping malls. But Jakarta was one of the first Asian mega-cities to start building upwards so the skyline was familiar. For those that like night life, Blok M is still there! I stayed at Le Meridien Jakarta Hotel on Sudirman - which is as traffic bound as ever. This is a nice 3 to 4-star hotel (my star criteria and ranking). I could have done without the mosquitoes in Le Brasserie but the helpful and smiling staff makes up for a lot of minor glitches. The room was comfortable but I struggled at the start to get a non-smoker. Really most hotels should now understand that ... read more

I love Aeroplanes and Airport. Growing up in North of Jakarta (just a few kilometres away from the old Airport), my father used to bring me when I was 2 or 3 to the end of the runway just to see planes (at that time, were good old DC-9, DC-10 and the Fokkers) touching down and taking off. I didn't remember this. What I remembered was, my first take off with Garuda's Fokker 28 (for those too young to remember this aircraft, it looked like a dick :) go ask Uncle Google!). It gave me a thrill! Then I knew I had it in me. Flying, and travelling, became a passion. I then said to myself, one day I'd travel the world. A dream, which is still pretty much a dream today. I've seen some places ... read more

Since established in 2006, Dian Al-Mahri mosque often talked about. Whether because of the extent of neighborhood mosque reputedly the largest in Southeast Asia, or because of extraordinary luxury. Just imagine, the building area of 8000 square meters mosque which occupies an area of 70 hectares was built using imported material grade, and five mosaic dome is coated with 24 carat gold. No wonder this mosque is better known as the Golden Dome mosque. The mosque is also a tourist place is located on the edge of roadway in District Meruyung-Cinere Limo, Depok. Spacious environment that does not mean being in a place easily accessible. From the highway the only fit two large vehicles, the Golden Dome mosque is hidden behind high walls. As shy to show off their splendor among motorists through road. I come ... read more

The past month has been more about making friends and creating relationships than about sight seeing. We met up with our friend Liany in Singapore, then travelled with her to visit her sister in Jakarta. We spent a wonderful four days getting to know Irma, Augie and their daughters. We saw some of the sights of Jakarta, but spent a lot of time in traffic jams, which is totally a fact of life there. The city has gotten so big with unregulated growth, and infrastructure has not kept up. (city pop 3 million plus) Irma and Augie own their own toy importing business, so we were able to observe the day to day operations. On their one day off, they took us to a zoo a few hours drive out side Jakarta (well, supposed to be, ... read more

Hey peeps, its been a while but lets see if I can accurately recall my recent 5 weeks spend in Indonesia. Happy reading I arrived In Jakarta (JKT), via Doha, roughly 9:30pm & adhered to the instructions forwarded to me by Liz. They were spot on & I arrived at Sudirman Park to a warm welcome by her We spent a couple of hours catching up over a hubbly & discussed our Singapore race weekend (see previous blog) in a couple of days time before we called it a night. I was only in JKT for a couple of days before we headed to Singapore. After a successful & enjoyable race weekend in Singapore, just over a mere 48hrs later we were back in Indonesia which would be my home for just over a month. And ... read more

... read more

So to pick up on the complaining that I was doing at the termination of the last blog update, I arrived in Malaysia one whole day later than planned due to a flight cancellation, which was a poor start to proceedings in the South East Asian region, but things soon started to look up! Having arrived at my uber-low budget accommodation, which it has to be said was a dead ringer for the archetypal 'crack den' (it seriously looked like that flat they all get wasted in in 'Trainspotting', just with a colossal extension and a much heavier populace of heroin addicts), I settled in nicely and got chatting away to a few of my fellow bag heads. This was actually quite a relief as communication with other human beings was something for which I had ... read more
