My first full day in Jakarta proved to be a relaxing one. Fletcher left for his course at 8am and had to take the only adapter with him. Determined to buy another one and to do a bit of shopping I set out at 9am heading for the two large shopping malls that he had told me were behind the hotel.
It was already steamy but very hazy so the large tower buildings loomed out of the mist. Walked along a very narrow and broken footpath, I passed some small street stalls and came to an imposing building, the Plaza Seneyan. Found out they did not open until 10am so had a coffee/carrot cake at a modern cafe nearby. Inside this mall could be anywhere in the world. The same shops, marble walls, just not many people at this hour of the morning. In one shop there were so many assistants they were standing to attention at the end of each row like sentinels. Rather intimidating. I didn't stay there long!.
Behind this mall was an even larger one Seneyan City. Crossing the road to get there was daunting. Even though there was a man carrying a Stop sign to
help, traffic ignored him and weaved around apace. This mall was more bustling and I went into Debenhams and bought a pair of shoes for 399,000 rupiyah (about $50). I also found a large electronics store and bought an adapter and then went down to the lower floor where there was a supermarket so grabbed some beers and milk. (They only have creamer for the coffee in the room). Crossing the road again without the stop sign man was even more tricky. In the end I put my hand out to say stop and just dodged!!
Fletcher came back to the hotel for lunch and then after he returned I decided to check out the swimming pool. This is almost an Olympic size pool with crystal clear water. It was tepid and there was only one other person there. Spent a happy couple of hours alternating between reading my book and cooling off in the water.A hard life!
After streaming the Brownlow count up to half way we set out to walk to a seafood restaurant Fletcher knew. It was pleasant strolling through the park with the brightly lit buildings illuminating the night sky. The Fuho Seafood restaurant was very large and was basically Chinese cuisine. There was an enormous wall of fish, crabs, lobsters etc waiting to be turned into the main course. Very fresh. We had an OK meal, though nothing to rave about although the stuffed crab claw and the salt and pepper squid were great. We had a bottle of French white even though wine is expensive here. Hey, we're on holidays. It was still early so we returned to another shopping centre a few doors down from the hotel. There was a great wine bar there so we relaxed with another bottle of white in a very pleasant atmosphere. We even played a couple of games of Strip Jack Naked with the cards they provided while doing so. (Fletcher won both!!
A gentle introduction to Jakarta. Tomorrow they have arranged a guide and driver to take me to see the main sights. Should be interesting.
