So we arrived in Java, the largest, most populous island in Indonesia on the 12th of February, and since then we've visited Jakarta (where we touched down), Bandung, Bali (which I'll write a separate entry for), Banyuwangi and the Ijen volcano, and Yogyakarta. Although Indonesia is so close to Singapore and Malaysia, it is completely different and when we first arrived in Jakarta, the place felt a lot more like India than any of its neighbours. Unfortunately the pavements and roads are not well maintained here so when we caught one of the local bajajs - very much like the Indian tuk tuks - from the bus station to our hostel we had a very bumpy ride! But also like India, the people are extremely friendly and made us feel welcome immediately. In Jakarta, we stayed ... read more

One thing is certain, my line of work has some benefits: I get to travel to interesting places, and meet interesting people, all in a day's work. As you will see from the photos, most of my time was spent in meetings but people were keen to engage and get to know about Australian technology and innovation. After I (Greg) left the girls in Udaipur, I traveled to Delhi and its surrounds, Hyderabad and its surrounds, Jakarta (in Indonesia of course), and Pelalawan in Sumatra. A lot of this was facilitated by Austrade, but more importantly facilitated by a series of really optimistic committed, young(er) people. In Delhi I was met by Anirban and we visited a dairy institute as well as the Australian High ... read more

Cobra blood and meat Living in Jakarta is always interesting. The people are always a source of surprise, the weather is at times treacherous and the food is, well, its different. The weekend just gone, I finally got around to trying a particular delicacy I have been wanting to try for a long time. Snake. Note: I don't want to hear any animal welfare bullshit on this. I should note that the snake was killed instantly and more humanely than most pigs or cows in England. So put your bacon sarny down keyboard warrior and kindly get lost. We arrived at the warung, approaching cautiously, who knows if a snake had ... read more

http://indonesianliving.tumblr.com/ - This is my more regular blog. Detailing the simpler and more day to day life of living in this awesome country. Please come check it out. Living in Jakarta Jakarta, also known as the Big Durian. The Durian is the perfect metaphor for Jakarta, its taste divides opinion as does Jakarta in terms of living there, you will either love it, or you will hate it. It really depends on what you expect when you get here and how hard you are willing to look beneath the dirt to find the jewel which the city is becoming. Oh and should I mention, like a Durian, Jakarta smells a bit. Jakarta is a city, like many, with its own problems. Any google search will bring up heaps about its infamous “macets” (traffic jams) and “banjirs” ... read more

So had a very nice Christmas in Jakarta. Found an old Dutch style bar where I whiled away a few pleasant evenings. They had live music and the first night the band came on all leather, tattoos and bandanna's so I thought we were in for a bit of an ear bashing with some heavy metal before they launched into their first number White Christmas followed by Jingle bells and Santa Claus is coming to town!! Spent the days, well afternoons I've been sleeping late, seeing the sights and a few museums. Jakarta is a great big sprawling mess of a place with appalling traffic and the fumes that go with it. It takes for ever to get anywhere but luckily Taxis are dirt cheap even if you do spend half the time going nowhere. I ... read more

Hi all Not really much of an update just a quick one to wish you all a Happy Christmas and New year. I'm in Jakarta for Xmas but will be moving on before new year. Arrived yesterday and took a taxi to the place I was staying about 20 miles away..it took 2 hours!! Jakarta has some of the worst traffic I've seen anywhere in the world. The guy on reception seemed to think making it from the airport in two hours was good going as the roads were not as busy as usual due to the holidays coming up. Staying at a small but nice hotel in North Jakarta that has a useful list of information in my room including these instructions "if you are in bed when an earthquake occurs, simply roll of the ... read more

so this is our last day of travelling. After much discussion we have decided to get a cab into the centre and find the what seems to be the only famous landmark in the city, which is strange for a vast capital. Taxis can take as much as 20 minutes to move a few hundred yards in Jakarta as the traffic is so bad. Currently there is no mass transit system so most people either walk or drive. Fortunately the cabs are trip and 1 hour trip cost sat little at £4.00. The cabs generally start on this back home. We got to the monument which is in the centre of Jakarta's main park. It's certainly a lot bigger than we expected and towers over most other structures nearby. The National Monument other wise known as ... read more

Today we were collected by the taxi at 9am to take us to Denpasar Airport. We are flying from Bali today to Jakarta where Louise and I will spend some time exploring the citi before going home. At the airport we both had some foot reflexology in one of the massage booths. This wasn't the most pleasant of experiences as it was very firm and felt more like every sensitive area on my feet was being given a once over with a garden roller. It actually left my foot tingling after for a while. Certainly not the best of treatments I have experienced on this treat. We arrived at our swanky apartment in Jakarta (the capital of Indonesia at mid afternoon) (wiki on Jakarta) the apartment is really plush and we are very high up so ... read more

For the last few months ever since school began, the athletic department has been hard at work at teaching, assessing and training students in many different athletic events. On Friday we had our anticipated Senior School Athletics Day where everyone wore their house colours and battled for first place. It was super hot - the sun was shining and there wasn’t a breeze to be had. Man, did the ice cold lemonade taste good and at the end of the day walking into the air conditioned office was refreshing! Despite it all, there was a buzz of energy in the air. The day ended in a teacher relay. Four teachers from each house team were selected. I was asked if I would join the relay team and I very willingly said yes! The relay track events ... read more

I am inside a coffee house in central Jakarta, nibbling on baked macaroni and cheese pie and sipping iced espresso. Strangely, a feeling of calmness greets me. A pleasant day has just begun, and though all forms of transport are hurtling through the streets of Indonesia’s notorious capital, it’s not as assaulting as I have been led to believe. It seems like only a few vendors and other early risers own the streets. Granted, it’s a Sunday morning and – I don’t know it yet – people are just gathering energy for the spurt of activities later in the day. Sleeplessness led me out early from the Six Degrees Backpackers’ Hostel just a few meters down the street. I decided to start my exploration of Jakarta in Cikini, a small neighborhood southeast of the central Gambir ... read more
