Kolkata, my love, is a woman. She is loud, and she loves to dance. She is beautiful, seductive and mysterious. She is very intelligent and opinionated, and she is not shy to share her thoughts and feelings. Her spirituality exists with and strengthens her intellect. She is an excellent cook. She can be very demanding, and yet she is generous. You must listen to her carefully. If you respect her, she will overlook your faults and accept you for who you are. She is impossible to understand. She is always changing, but she always stays the same. Her faults are easy to recognize, but if you love her, easy to forgive. She drains my energy. She makes me mad. Even when we are far apart, she is near to my heart. If I came to her ... read more

It was great to be back, but it seems it is time to move on..... A group of French people have invited me to go with them to Varanasi. I feel it is my duty to help out the new ferangi in India. Also, it is a good excuse to get out of this city for some time. I love Kolkata. I absolutely love it. However, it has been a bit intense. Yes, it is great to know people, but maybe I should go spend some time in a place where nobody knows my name, and I cannot speak any of the language. Yesterday I took a walk in the evening. Whenever someone interacted with me, I tried to respond in Bengali. New Market Tout: "What do you want to buy?" Me: "Ami khabar chai. Khabar ... read more

In India as in life, its important to have a plan but not too much of a plan; to know where you are intending to go, but not with too much certitude; to set out on your own with confidence, but to be very open to company along the way; and to rely on yourself, but be open to trusting others. And so, one often finds oneself thrust into the path of a new friendship that is totally random and unexpected. And so often the unexpected includes meeting someone who totally surprises you in terms of the extent they will go to make you welcome and comfortable. I was in Kolkata for 4 days of leisure. I had not been to this amazing city for 30 years. But my memory of the first time I came ... read more

Back in my first love of travel- Kolkata. On the taxi ride from the airport to Sudder street, I had a wide grin on my bearded face, in contrast to the look of exhaustion and horror I possessed two years ago. I'm sleeping back in the same guesthouse, sharing a room on the top with my coworker and travel companion Bennyboy. It's been fun showing him around. He has commented on how much more friendly the locals are with me than the folks in China. Lots of kamoochen acchen and a few kaamon accho going around. Good to see friendly familiar faces! It's remarkable how much development there has been. Mostly things are the same, but there are small and important differences. The huge open-air garbage pit by New Market has been walled off. So has ... read more

So by this point in my stay i'm coming to the point where the thrill of being here is wearing off and my mind is going hither and tither sparking desires and speculating about future plans. Now i feel that i will not be able to maintain a life in an ashrama wherever i am, unless of course i get some seva that fits my nature. i don't know what that is and now i feel kind of stagnant doing a very necessary seva. i think that this is to help me realize how sincere i am and what my dedication is. if i am fully dedicated than i will happily do any seva with 100% effort but now with this i am feeling very lazy doing what i need to be doing, and in when ... read more

Krishna Krishna Krishna Krishna. This path of the science of self realization is quite difficult from a finite's perspective. My understanding of the process is that first we must meditate on and realize our own good and bad qualities through self examination and introspection. I feel that through self examination we come to realize our many character defects, such as--i'll speak for myself here--narcissism, conceit, self-centeredness, self-indulgent, self-serving, miserly and general inconsiderate, egocentric qualities. I can't be ALL bad, can I? No! I must have some worth in the positive. I mean, all those "character defects" are good for ME, but when you consider that I have to deal with others than you can see that some problem may arise for me if i am acting fully in regards to my own benefit. Again, I MUST ... read more

Arrived in Kolkatta which is pretty much what I expect 1950 England to look like. Streets are full of cows, goats, rickshaws, taxis, rubbish, makeshift houses and the occasional monkey. Ended up going on a 3 hour tour of the city with some guy pulling me round on a hand drawn cart. Pics to come soon!... read more
