Padraic was overjoyed. He had somehow used his whiteness (or possibly his beard and lungi) to walk to the "VIP" area of Babu Ghat and view the returning of the victorious Durga to the elements. After being waved through by pretty, smiling, plump brown girls in police-training uniforms, he found himself at the end of the procession, watching the muddy Hoogli fill with man's physical depiction of the timeless triumph of good over evil. Hundreds of statues littered the riverbank a few dozen meters downstream. The VIP area was populated by a few dozen media persons (both Indian and ferangi) with expensive ties and large cameras. Padraic stood near them, swaying in the sacred rhythms of a thousand drums and flowing water. He was watched with a mixture of indifference, curiosity, and vague suspicion by the ... read more

Greeting from Calcutta! Things have warmed up from our chilly week in the hills and so have the noise, dust and pollution levels. Calcutta is a sprawling city with a centre that has a very significant colonial influence. Wide avenues, big parks and big while buildings with domes and columns straight out of central London give the city a very different feel to Delhi. The major benefit to us of the city having previously been the capital of British India is its pavements, it makes walking along far more relaxing when you are not being buzzed by trams, buses, taxis and motorbikes. We've been wondering around the city for the past couple of days getting the feel for the place as well as visiting some of the tourist landmarks like the impressive Victoria memorial (see photo) ... read more

Very quick entry this time, and vary late! In March I managed to get Claire to let me travel to India by myself for three weeks. Few days in Kolkata, then popped to Goa to see our friends Giane and Babu. Then Darjeeling for about ten days and back to Kolkata. Flew to Kuala Lumpur, met up with Claire flying in from Australia and then onto the UK for three weeks. Loved Calcutta despite the filth. Loved Darjeeling despite the clouds. Waited there for the weather to lift to see the famous view of the Himalayas. Never got to see it, they lifted the day after I left. Soon after our return to Australia, Claire rolled her car several times in the outback while working as a public health nurse. Suffered over 30 fractures and a ... read more

Durga Puja 2008 - "The biggest party in the world" according to justifiably proud Kolkata-vallahs. Every block had a makeshift bamboo-and-cloth temple and inside were colorful statues of the multi-armed Durga astride a lion, slaying the Demon who Takes Many Forms. For five days everyone- the fat, the old, the young, the crippled, the students, workers, gangsters, drug-dealers, chai-stand owners, children and beggars of Kolkata - dressed in their finest clothes and enjoyed the festive atmosphere. Pale tourists, Sikhs with impenetrable forests of facial hair and conservative Muslim women in black Chadors visited the temporary temples to pay respect to feminine power and receive a small dish of channa chat. For five days the statues were brought to the Hoogli and deposited in this sacred offshoot of the Ganges. Some were small, with a single man ... read more

After volunteering in the morning, Padraic ran into his deaf Christian friend. DCF is a local who often spends time with tourists (a red flag, but DCF had never done Paul wrong). DCF used sign language to convey the following message to Padraic: “Meet me here at three. We will take a bus to a place to smoke hash with men who have long beards. I will supply. No money needed.” Padraic had spent the last six months in India- most of this in Kolkata. He had a sizable beard, and enough Bengali to get into or out of a bad situation. It was a Monday, the Sabbath day for Shiva worshipers. The veneration of Shiva (the highest Deity according to most Hindus of Kolkata) is often accompanied by the consumption of cannabis. Therefore, Padraic assumed ... read more

Today is my last full day before I check out of Kolkata , my travel agent came good and got me a reserved quota ticket. Yesterday I went to the Botanical Gardens (and honed my haggling skills with the taxi driver). It was very picturesque and a good way to spend a few hours in the sun. I nearly ended up having to take the bus home, due to said dispute with the sole taxi driver outside the gardens, which would not have been fun as I had no idea what was going on. I was already feeling a little put out because the driver on the journey down would not shift below his starting (over) price of 200 Rs, and though my Rough Guide is two years old, it says the fare should have been ... read more

The city is starting to gear up for Durga Puja, a five day annual holiday celebrating the worship of the Goddess Durga. This is what About.Com says about the Hindu festival: "Durga Puja is celebrated in a similar manner to the Ganesh Chaturthi festival. The start of the festival sees huge, elaborately crafted statutes of Goddess Durga installed in homes and beautifully decorated podiums all over the city. At the end of the festival, the statutes are paraded through the streets, accompanied by much music and dancing, and then immersed in the Hooghly river" The city becomes awash with thousands and thousands of people, and over 2000 pandals are set up, along with numerous roadside food stalls. Traffic grinds to a standstill, with some people abandoning their cars altogether to continue their journey on foot. The ... read more

Yesterday I also found time to do a bit of sight seeing and took a walk down Chowringhee Road, which I think, is the main street in Kolkata. It allowed me to see the hustle and bustle of life in Kolkata - the fruit and drink stalls every few metres, the cloth and jewelry shops, the crowds, the roadside stalls selling some of the nicest curries I've ever set my nose on, the bench by the bus stop underneath which there was a mother dog bringing up some puppies. If I'm going to become a Guru like Kate and Marta say (there, you got your mention! ), it won't be here, maybe South India! There seems to be a lot of nice parks on the other side of the busy motorway, but as I was just ... read more

Hi all Welcome to chaotic Kolkata. Very beautiful in places, but a bit mad. You will be pleased to know I made it here in one piece. I was a little late contacting people to let them know I was safe and sound as none of the three phones I wanted to take to India worked unfortunately. I tried to buy one today but most places were closed with it being a Sunday, so I'm going to try again tomorrow at a large phone shop and get a local pay as you go phone. I wasn't too nervous until about ten minutes before setting off for the airport, when the nerves began to hit me hard, but then again I always have hated waiting for things. At Kings Cross the Hare Krishna's were out in force, ... read more
