Our last stop in India was the once British capital of India. Pete instantly liked this city better than any other city in India but he couldn’t pinpoint why. We finally decided it was due to the tree lined streets, wider boulevards, no cows wandering the city meaning no cow pies to avoid stepping in and all the yellow cabs instead of tuk tuks. When we arrived it was Republic Day, the day India no longer was under British Rule. We walked to the parade route but due to the amount of people we only saw one float and decided it wasn’t worth standing there too watch. During our time in India Pete had developed an infection of some sort in his nose and it was really bothering him. He decided it would be better to ... read more

I am writing this blog a week after our departure from India in order to cool off from our eventful departure. If I would have written this the day after the events occurred I don’t know if I could have kept a level head and I am the calm/mellow one in our relationship, so here it goes. It all started at 5pm when we shared a cab with Carole to the airport. She had prearranged the airport transfer with Intrepid Travel at the cost of $36 Australian Dollars as this was her 1st time traveling outside of Australia and New Zealand and she was a solo traveler. The fee was based on per person so Pete and I knew we could get it much cheaper on our own. Carole let us ride for free as she ... read more

I’m glad I went, and I’m glad I never have to go back. - Mark Twain on Calcutta (Kolkata) I expected to feel this way about Kolkata but didn't. Many travelers report being overwhelmed by the humanity, the squalor, the poverty. Certainly Kolkata has all these things, but in comparison to the other places we visited I found it relatively tidy and orderly, with many people employed looking out for the tourists and their fellow Kolkatans, in the streets as well as in the museums. It reminded me a bit of Mumbai, although quieter and more spread out, at least in terms of the sights. It's a city I'd like to return to and experience again, as two days certainly wasn't enough here. We began our stay at the Broadway Hotel, a nice place with pleasant ... read more

So I spent a few days in Kolkata with a cool couchsurfer, and did basically no sight-seeing at all. We basically had too much fun eating out and exploring the Kolkata scene. I arrived in Kolkata from Dubai via Doha at 3:10am, and we in fact arrived a bit early. The flight turned out pretty awesome since I got an upgrade to first class which was nice since it was a 5 hour flight. I didn't really get a whole huge amount of sleep, but damn it was comfortable. A nice dinner, a glass of wine, and even my own DVD player. When I arrived in Kolkata I took a taxi to my couchsurfers apartment. I got ripped off and paid 800 Rupee ($16.7) since I couldn't use the prepaid taxi booth since I had absolutely ... read more

Day 1 - Pulling into Kolkata train station 4 hours later than scheduled, we made our way outside to find a rickshaw, only to discover there was nothing but taxis. Paying at the pre-paid taxi stand, we hopped in the vehicle and made our way to the backpacker district located around Sudder Street. Due to Kolkata's infamous heavy traffic, the 5km journey took us over one hour. When we finally arrived we made our way to Hotel Maria, where the four of us checked into a quad room for the night. Throwing the belongings in the room, we headed out to explore the city stopping next to the local meat market where Chris enjoyed a hair-cut and shave in a wooden shed for the bargain price of 40 rupees (50 pence)! Following this we all met ... read more

We awoke after our nightmare trip here and decided that we would use our time here in Fort Cochin to just kick back and not do a lot. But first we had to get our train ticket out of here for 4 days time (this was now standard practice for us!) We hopped back on the 20 minute ferry for 4p (!!!!) and made our way to the station where the manager proceeded to be a good samaritan and make up our passport numbers in his records as we hadn't brought them with us. Legend. Train ticket to Chennai. Check. We spent the rest of the day on the busy island of Ernkaulam, just wandering around book sales and drinking coffee for mere pence. Ernkaulam is no different to any other city in India, after ... read more
