I've now spent more time in Rishikesh than in any oth part of India. There's not really a whole lot to see, so i won't really spend a lot of time writting on it. I did however find a place with a trully chilled out vibe relaxed atmosphere. Th train ride up was itself something special (as they often are). This time we were booked on the Shatabti express, one of the all AC trains that runs from city to city through the day. This was crazy, we were treated like we were on an airliner. People in uniforms would come and offer drinks and give us bottled water free. Every stop there would be an anouncement in English and Japanese explaining what the town was known for - quite something for the tourist who was ... read more

This is what you do. Take a folding chair and put it in your refrigerator. Turn the dial up ...... so it gets really cold. Then sit in the chair and have a friend push the fridge down a long flight of stairs and repeat.........FOR FOURTEEN HOURS. This is what it felt like to be on our overnight bus-ride from Mcleodganj to Rishikesh. When we bought the tickets in Mcleodganj, we were told we would be riding in a Deluxe-Bus with fully reclinable seats......this was a lie. The bus had no bathroom, no shocks, screeching breaks, and the seats only did a semi-recline....not such a big deal. The problem was the cold-air blowing in from the cracks in the windows. WE WERE FREEEEZING! At 5:30pm, I (michael) started off wearing a long-sleeve shirt and a fleece ... read more

You'd assume from the title that we attended an Indian wedding, but we didn't actually manage to do that... On our first day in Rishikesh Dave and I rented a motorbike and went up to a nearby temple. As often happens on trips like this the destination itself was less interesting than the small things on the way. The view from the temple would have been beautiful if it hadn't been so misty (we should have gone to see the sunrise like the guide recommended), but we didn't manage to see much. Yet on the way we stopped at an amusement park / circus in a small town. There weren't many attractions (for the locals we seemed to be the biggest attraction there - a whole flock of them followed me the first time I went ... read more

If before I got acquainted with Indian math, now I started learning Indian logic, though I'm still clueless about it. I think alot of it has to do with the language barrier. I still don't know why people say everyone here knows English - most my conversations with locals are conducted with me talking in English and them answering in Hindi, or something in English which is completely irrelevant to what I asked (for example the conversation in the title). Somehow usually we still manage to understand each other, but when we don't it can be quite frustrating. I guess it also has to do with a different way of looking at life. Dave (a guy from NZ I'm traveling with) and I took a train from Amritsar to Haridwar and for some reason assumed that ... read more

Air gach taobh dha'n a Ghanga, far an robh sinn a campadh, bha beantan mora a dol suas agus suas! Gach oidhche, anuair a bha sinn a suidhe timicheal air an teine, bha sinn a coimhead suas air na soluis a bha tighinn bho na coimhearsnachdan beaga a bha fuireach shuas. Cha robh dealan aca, 's leis a sin cha robh moran soluis ann airson na daoine a bha fuireach as na beantan. Aon latha choisich sinn air an drochaid a bha dol thairis an Ganga agus chaidh sinn suas an rathad cas. Bha torr dhaoine ag obair gu trang ag ullachadh an rathad agus bha iad uile cho deonach agus toilichte a bhi g'obair comhladh. Bha na nigheanan a togail na clachan mora agus a coiseach leis air a cheann agus bha na gillean an ... read more

A 7:00 am train from Delhi station was fairly straight forward, except our platform was the only one which had a malfunctionaing electric sign announcing train details, but as it got busier and busier (cliches like seething mass of humanity spring to mind) it was reassuring to have our reservations printed and stuck to the side of the carriage... The only real disconcerting thing about the train was that it seemed perfectly acceptable to open the door while travelling for fresh air... We were met at Haridwar by a taxi who took us 50km to our camp by the Ganga, and what a river, what a spot. Haridwar and rishikesh are the last towns on the plains before the foothills of the Himalaya, the Ganga, sacred to all Hindus carves its way through a steep sided ... read more

In the Aquaterra camp at Silversands on the bank of the Ganges, there are dry pit latrines. These toilets are pits dug in the ground. A wooden box with a toilet seat is placed on top of the hole. There is a pile of sand and lime behind the box with a scoop on top of the pile. You use it just like home but when you are finished you scoop some of the sand/lime mixture on top of your "job"! This kind of toilet is new to me; it feels Ok after a while but still a bit weird compared to toilets at home. It seems to work well if a bit smelly! Around India they have either normal "Western Style" toilets or "Indian Style" toilets which are just a hole with foot pads either ... read more

Since there were no baths at the Silversands camp and since Ronan hates showers he had to have a "bucket"! He had a bucket which we took into the square tented shower rooms and filled from the tap which was half way up the showers water pipe. We don't know how the water was heated but it came out nice and warm once we gave the guys at the camp a 10 minute warning! The showers were normal enough for me and Ronan seemed to enjoy his bucket!... read more

well i've spent the last here in rishikesh... a spiritual place on the ganga in the foothills of the himalaya's... beautiful... the beatles came hear and stayed with maharishi mahesh yogi and consequently wrote many of the songs found on the white album... now it has become quite touristy but still charming none-the-less... it is called the yoga capital of the world and i can see why ;-) i did some yoga and appreciated it... hatha and pranayama while learning many asanas (positions?)... i must admit i dont see myself being a yogi but i will take what i learned and hopefully incorporate it into a daily routine of healthy living... the weather during the days here is beautiful but at this time of year there is a cold wind that blows down through the valley... ... read more

Ashley and I moved to separate hotels yesterday, I think we were getting in eachother's shoes a bit. Anyway, it's all good now. For the last two evenings i've been going to a singalong religious ceremony by the water, it's great fun - very lively and fantastic music! I met a boy 2 days ago, he just hobbled past me (as one of his legs is badly damaged) I thought he was going to ask for money but he just came past and sat next to me. He has no family and just lives on the streets, it's really sad... I have been spending time with him and gave him my socks yesterday.. Last night I nearly got horned by a cow - moved out the way just in time! Walked up to a fantastic temple ... read more
