The bridge was closed for the last two days. The boatmen told me that it was closed because it was dangerous, broken and they were trying to fix it. Such a happening had a twofold effect on me. One, I began to think I was psychic because I myself had thought the bridge was broken and needed fixin' a couple of days ago. Two, it exponetially increased my exposure to bona fide Indian pilgrims, who were now forced to take the boat instead of the bridge. I found myself at the end of the two days, taking a ride across the river just for the heck of it. As privacy and space are concepts that I am beginning to believe do not exist in the Hindu / Indian lexicon I, during those trips, made many Temporary ... read more

I have had a very busy day, what with photoshoots and booking train tickets. The former has become a regular feature of my life and requires that I am available at all times to pose with my adoring fans. Photoshoots usually come about if I am stationary for any period of time and are generally preceded by sly glances, pointing, and the production of a camera. The 'plese, plese, photoe photoe" refrain signals to me it is time once again to don my photo position. A number of snaps are then taken with various shuffling of positions to ensure all family members get a photo with me. I assumed that being here would mean endless days of relaxing and perhaps boredom, with ample time to fill in my travel blog. I was wrong. The simplest of ... read more

Back in the city. The ashram was beautiful. 7 days in a jungle paradise on the Ganga. Private beach, great food, better yoga, beautiful gardens, and even more beautiful people. Complete peace and quiet 5 miles from the nearest shop, computer, or mob of obnoxious hippies. This environment allowed us to progress amazingly fast at our yoga, and fostered some great friendships with really cool people. We had two birthday parties during the week - bonfires, great guitar and drum jams, singing, dancing, and even a sitar show. Out of 25 people, we had 7 Canadians, 6 of us from Vancouver. One has been playing sitar for five years and has offered to teach me everything he knows about it. Two others have been travelling with an obscenely wealthy couple from New Zealand who have paid ... read more

Having been subjected to two days of drip dry I was ecstatic to see my luggage arrive. I had also started to worry about my luggage entering the abyss of Indian travel and with it, my beautiful new rucksack and malaria tablets. Last night a couple of people staying in the same spot had warned me about the monkeys. The monkeys according to them, came onto the balcony without any warning, were persistent and liable to come in your window, particularly if they smelt any food. So I was glad I had been forewarned when at 5.30 this morning I heard a persistent tapping on my window and door. I determinedly ignored it and seeing a couple of shadows got up to close the half open window. But the noise continued and eventually it started to ... read more

I just arrived in Rishikesh about an hour ago, minus my luggage and attendant clean clothes. I didn't think it was possible to dry myself with a sock but hey that's life - full of suprises. Delhi was crazy. Everyone says it is a culture shock but nothing could have prepared me for the pollution and the ever-present smell from Delhi to Rishikesh. The 7 hour drive from the airport to Rishikesh was unbelievable. There was no discernible road. I kept waiting for Delhi to end and to become countryside - it didn't. There was an awful lot of throat clearing and nose excavation going on all over Delhi. After the journey I could understand, given the level of pollution, why this was so. Nevertheless beautiful, colorful saris floating in the gentle breeze seemed slightly incongrous ... read more

Hey Jen you have to take hot water only with honey FIRST thing in the morning. After you can continue on with your day with tea and breakfast. It doesn't replace a meal but allow some time between your honey water and breakfast and tea. As for your other questions I'll ask the doctor tomorrow. ;) Tonight I have an appointment with an astrologer that's recommended by many people in town. Supposedly he has a really good reputation comes from a long line of astrologers in his family. Did you know that you can major in astrology here in college?? Also palmisty, chakras, etc....Neat huh! I will fill you in on details later if you are interested! Love you all! Can't wait to hear from you Mamma Byrne!... read more

Hey you guys!! (have to say like sloth from Goonies :) ) So I am feeling so much better!!! It's taken awhile and I've been in the dumps but now I am feeling soooo much better and have a really new outlook on Ayurvedic Medicine. I decided to go to an ayurvedic doctor here after I didn't start feeling better. I was really tired, sluggish, and not eating at all. And if you know me....welllll I like to eat. :) So I've started something called panchakarma. I am doing a month long detox that consists of a variety of things but it completely flushes your system of all impurities. It gets rid of any toxins left over from being sick, tobacco, alchohol, drugs, etc. It completely restores the natural harmony of the body according to Ayurvedic ... read more

Hari Om! A couple of nights ago we took the sleeper (HAH!) bus overnight from McLeod Ganj. When we got in to town, half asleep, pretty groggy, and feeling generally disgusting after such a long ride, the conductor yelled out DEHRA DUN! BUS STAND! ILLEGAL PARKING GET OUT! He shooed out all of the toursits and then the bus took off, leaving us standing in the middle of the road, with no bus stand in sight. We managed to find the bus stand that was a few blocks away, but of course, there were no buses to Rishikesh. After haggling with a Rickshaw driver and with the help of a girl we met on the bus, we found our way to the real bus stand and were quickly on our way to Rishikesh. Being "back in ... read more

So I just went thru the worst twenty four hours ever.... I've been getting sick on and off for the last month now three times total where I thought I just ate something bad and would have about 24 hours where I couldn't eat and would have vomiting or diarrhea or if real lucky both... So the other day I felt another bout of this coming on and so I just stopped eating and just drank fluids to make it easier on myself if I ended up vomiting....so now that I've prepared myself it ends up soooooo much worse. Around seven pm I start feeling really sick worse then before and start getting really cold. I ask the front desk to call a doctor because in a matter of two hours I felt all my strength ... read more
