Well we finally made it to Rishikesh in the north and it is fabulous. We have a balcony overlooking the Ganga and can even see our Ashram too. It's mad to think that we are actually at the Himalayas. The guy who met us at the railway station, Baba, turned out to be so nice and helpful, he collected us the first morning to bring us to the ashram, then brought Irene on a mad motorcycle ride to get a cricket bat for her brother. We got a message to return his call the first morning, so I phoned the mobile number but it turned out to be Mr. Siu - the man who had helped us find our correct carraige after we had literally just thrown ourselves on the train. He was just phoning to ... read more

Nameste Well after many days of agony I finally made it to a computer to update our past days of travel. Our arrival and stay in Delhi was not as bad as I thought. I was prepared to enter into the most polluted city in the world with mobs of people haggling us for money and our business. Though there was quite a bit I did not find it nearly as polluted or annoying as Bangkok, Thailand. I did not feel the cultural shock I was expecting. None the less we left there shortly and are now in Rishikesh. Upon our arrival at 6 am in the morning, and with our first steps of the bus, we were encountered with a mob of rickshaw drivers yelling and grabbing at our bags, trying to get our business. ... read more

So we leave Jasalmer at 10am on Friday, after driving for the whole day and having a bit of a long detour through Bikaner - due to Magnus, the Norgewian dude wanting to get food and Bengali being a thick fucker - we end up having to stay in this FILTHY roadside motel place....as Bengali won't drive at night, he even refuses to use his full lights - they have to be on dim the whole time. Bearing in mind that this is the country where they drive like maniacs and the rest of the population refuse to dim their lights even with oncoming traffic it's not a great idea! But the motel place was gross, we literally got in, slept and set off at like 8 the next morn tp avoid being there any ... read more

I'll try to make this as uplifting and positive as possible but right now Im getting over a serious war with the toilet. After many attacks the bowl resisted and concessions are finally being made. Melissa has just taken on the fever part of the flu, aka travelers bug, and is now in bed sleeping it off. We got it from a vendor who sells mint and lime sodas that he prepares on the street, there supposed to heal the soul or something. I guess I needed a lot of soul cleansing. Luckily we bought some generic cipro while in Thailand and it has settled the bacteria party in our stomachs. So now we are taking it very easy on the foothills of the himalayas in Rishikesh, the yoga capital of the world. The town is ... read more

A little behind on my travel blogs, but do not worry, now that I'm traveling by myself I'll have plenty of time to catch up! Going back three weeks ago . . . We were still in India, still in Rishikesh, seems like a lifetime ago on a different planet. Rachel, Jordana and I had planned to go on a four day Himalayan trek to climb a mountain peak which reached a little more than 4,000 meters (the highest mountain peak in Lake Tahoe is at Heavenly, and is ONLY 3068 meters tall!). We had our guide Mokesh to lead us through beautiful mountains, remote villages and deep valleys. Despite cold weather, hail and rain, we reached our peak on the fourth day! It was exhilarating. Here are my pictures from that event, enjoy! Next Destination: ... read more

So I'm in Rishikesh and have come to work on a small Electricity project at the Swami Rama Sadhaka Gram. It is a Yoga School and not denominated with any one religion. I need to get that out because whenever someone thinks of Rishikesh, the first image that comes into your mind is Hinduism. While Rishikesh is a Hindu pilgrimage centre this ashram is a school of Yoga and doesn't limit itself to any one religion. It carries books on all faiths in its library and bookstore and its teachings are universal. Its hard to walk on the streets of Calgary and miss the numerous Yoga schools. Its become a big business lately. This ashram is pretty new (only 2 years old) and I've come here to help out. The best way to show you this ... read more

So, travel blogs are easy when the internet is fast. Luckily, here in the beautiful city of Rishikesh (where the Beatles spent six month sharpening their sitar playing skills), in addition to being the 'yoga capital of the world', the 'gateway to the Himilayas,' and one of the holier cities in on the Ganges river, Rishikesh also has fast internet. This is my second journal entry to my travel blog that I'm not sure anyone is receiving or that I'm doing correctly; it's very exciting. Since my first entry, Jordana, Rachel and I have covered a lot of ground in Northern India, maturing from the luxurious and always delayed trains, to learning how to ride the public buses. After Pushkar, where we ended up hanging around an extra day because it's incredibly relaxing (which is another ... read more

I graduated from yoga school and am now officially a yoga teacher! I"m very happy about that. Becca and I have changed our travel plans and are headed back to Thailand on Friday so I'm taking this opportunity to publish some more India pictures. I published some of the Ganges. I will miss being right by this beautiful river. My next entry will be from Thailand! ps The old Swami from my last blog entry is 96 years old!!... read more

This man came to teach our yoga class. He wears bright orange because he is a monk. All monks in India wear only orange. He may look like an old man but none of us could keep up with his yoga session. He's an incredible athlete. How old do you think he is? The answer will be in my next blog entry. I'll give you a clue. He has been practicing yoga for more than 70 years!... read more

Cows are considered sacred in India. Hindu people don't eat cows and cows wander the streets, they even hang out on the beach. Traffic stops for them and beware if you hit one- you'll be in big trouble. Last time I was in India a hungry holy cow pushed me off the sidewalk. I think she was looking for food. Here in Rishikesh there are lots of cows. Some of them live with people but some of them just live in the street. If you go out late at night or early in the morning you you walk past lots of sleeping cows. They're also really good at climbing up and down stairs here.... read more
