“No stop signs, speed limit - Nobody’s gonna slow me down Like a wheel, gonna spin it - Nobody’s gonna mess me round Hey Satan, payin’ my dues - Playing in a rocking band Hey Momma, look at me - I’m on my way to the promised land” (AC/DC) Mango and lychees are in season, therefore life is beautiful :) When one listens to soem cyclists, one must think they are... boring :) Sooner or later they all talk about... food ;) About where one can find good food, cheap and good, cheap, good and... lots of it :) Cyclists seem to be "boring people". They cycle all day, drink amazing amounts of fluids (we were not used to drink coke, but we do these days as we drink whatever is cold and has a bit ... read more

Varanasi to Haridwar/RishikeshSion and Niki Well we finally made it off the plains and out of the heat! After a nightmare train journey from Varanasi we arrived in Haridwar to be greeted by the sweet feeling of cold air on our strained and grubby faces. Whilst its till 30c or more in the day, thats the coldest its been in a while for us crazy bastards travelling through the Indian desert in Summer, what were we thinking! We spent the first few days in Haridwar unable to bear the thought of leaving our hotel room. We have been a sorry sight; recovering from heat exhaustion, lack of sleep, stomach bugs, and an oncoming cold, we lay on the bed moaning for a few days feeling sorry for ourselves. But, hey, its better then going to work! ... read more

Rishikesh is the seat of spiritual materialist tourism. Whatever you want you can get. Holy men called babas, sannyasins, saddhus* wander the streets, ghats and bathe in the ganges. People's everyday lives are easily interwined with the religious and ceremonial. The man who owns the place I go to for breakfast says his prayers and conducts his ceremony, which consists of lighting incense, delicate bells and singing, in between serving breakfast. It is really nice to witness but timing is kinda tricky - you have to make sure that you don't get arrive when he is in the middle of his prayers and that you don't need to leave before he is finished. This morning, having finished his ceremony, he plugged a hole by the door with some rat poison and some incense, presumably covering all ... read more

Well, the singathon was a bit of a washout. On Thursday morning, I took a tuk-tuk to Haridwar, about an hour away. (A tuk-tuk is a mechanical rickshaw that can comfortably take five people but can frequently be seen carrying ten.) At Haridwar I spied a policeman across a busy roundabout. As I made my way towards him to ask for directions, a small man with a humped back, dressed in orange robes, and carrying a stick spied me and quickly attached himself to me. Orange robes are worn by holy men and conmen alike in Rishikesh. The man, who subsequently introduced himself to me as Veejay, said he was a holy man and sought money to make an offering to his temple. When I refused he offered to take me to the ashram. I declined ... read more

Rishikesh is the yoga capital of the world. It is on the holy Ganges river and is full of Ashrams, which are basic accommodation where you can stay for cheap and practice yoga. Rishikesh is also the place the Beatles came to in 1967 and wrote many songs for the White Album But it is not as I had expected and had none of the good feelings that radiated from Dharamsala. Robin and I spend a lot of time talking about religion and philosophy and nihilism, but our first day there isn’t too eventful. The second day is much better. The Canadian girls, Christina and Satomi, that I met in Dharamsala, travel to Rishikesh to meet me, as we made a plan together to continue on to a nature reserve. The girls arrive early morning ... read more
