What else you can expect being a roadie to have machine under your butt and your girl on your back. This was the dream and it came true on me on my first long ride on my bull, after marriage, so officially I will call it a HONEYMOON TRIP. Day 1: Once all three of us got geared-up with our spares, we headed on towards Mysore early in morning. It was a prefect time I guess, Diwali was about to come and people were planning to be mamma’s baby. This gave us opportunity to have roads just for us. Started from home around 4:30 AM with speedo saying 58865. I preferred to go to Mysore via NH 209 don’t know why. But I like that route much, its being longer though. Filled tank in Mysore and ... read more

January 12th 2008........5:10PM.......we were at one of the southernmost tips in India. I can call it the only southernmost tip of India.....but we must not forget our dear Andaman and Nicobar Islands!! Though we were tired with the day-long journey from the arabian sea cost of Kochi....watching all the fantastic beaches of Kollam, Varkala and heading towards Thiruvananthapuram.....the excellent sea breeze of Kanyakumari has got us rid of all the strain!! By the time we reached the place.....there was a lot of rush on roads. It looked like some quarell was going on in the first place......but by observing closely I understood how wrong I was!! The first thing which we get reminded when we think of Kanyakumari is the famous "Vivekananda Rock"......where Swami Vivekananda has meditated and undergone spiritual excellence. The best thing which I ... read more

Just a bit about this place. Lonely Planet is fairly scathing about Kanya (the reason for all the different spellings is (a) I can't always remember the correct one, and (b) neither can the Indians). They are wrong - it really is well worth a visit, and we are so glad we went. Our original choice after Madurai was Ramesvaran, a peninsula between India and Sri Lanka. We only changed our plans because we would have had to return to Madurai again, and spent more time there before we could get to our next stop. Madness, of course - this is India, after all! Our hotel was right next to the temple down by the beach. And at 4.30 every morning, they started blaring Hindu chants from a massive speaker system; enough to rattle the windows ... read more

The tip of India, that is, though in places India is just one big tip. We went to a travel agent in Madurai on Monday and asked about trains to Kanniyakumari, the Southernmost point of India. "Sorry, the train today is full" "But we want to go tomorrow" Trains only on a Monday". OK, what are the alternatives. "You can get a bus. It runs overnight, about 6 hours. 250 Rupees each" (Thats just over £3). "Where do we get the bus?" "It will pick you up from your hotel about 9:30 pm". So we booked for Tuesday night. Madurai was 'exciting', but if you told a Scot you were planning to go there, he would probably reply "Mad you are; aye". Tuesday night we checked out of TM Lodge, and sat waiting for the bus. ... read more

Geo: 8.08403, 77.5419 INDIA'S LANDS END Today we set off very early to go to KanyaKumari India's Lands end, Kanyakumari is also known as Cape Comerin, the southernmost tip of India where Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean conflate. The KanyaKumari beach is famous for its exuberant scenes of the sunsets. On the way to Kanyakumari we passed Kovalam which is a small village along the shoreline, we spend little while here at this fabulous beach with blue waters. I had some coconut water and then we continued our journey, passing few majestic hills and hawkers selling tats. We reached Kanyakumari and the Guide told us about the legend of the Kanyakumari which was most fascinating. KANYAKUMARI – THE V... read more

Thursday, Nov 26th - Kaniyakumari & Pondicherry Yesterday morning I finally left Varkala beach. It was definitely about time. The place is nice and chilled and stuff, but you sometimes just gotta move on, cause all the convenience can get suffocating. Don’t really know, if that sounds logical, but I think everyone who travels, knows exactly what I’m talking about. So yesterday morning I left to take a train to get all the way down south to Kaniyakumari, the southernmost point of India. On the first train I found out, why there are railings besides the doors: So you can hold on to them, when the train is jammed-packed not to fall off the train. Get kinda hard with a backpack on my back, but I survived :-) No, sounds more dramatic than it actually was. ... read more

Kanyakumari - Friday 13 November The breakfast buffet at the GRT Regency in Madurai was one of the best I’ve ever seen - fresh pineapple juice, freshly-sliced papaya and pineapple, cereals, toast, cakes, croissants and chocolate-covered doughnuts, Indian foods of almost every type - for vegetarian and non-vegetarian diets, lots of western-style things, like chicken sausages, eggs cooked to order... You name it, they had it. Today, while I made my usual half-dozen trips to reload my plate, Lajpal decided that all this good eating was damaging his waistline and opted for just fruit juice, fresh fruit and a cup of masala chai. “I want to look like a cricket bat”, he said, “not a football!” Well, he does have to look trim in time for his marriage, although that’s probably a year to 18 months ... read more

For my birthday weekend, we decided to take a trip to Kanyakumari and sneak a peek at Kerala. Kanyakumari is a little beach town at the Southern tip of India. It’s the place where 3 bodies of water meet: the Bay of Bengal from the East, the Indian Ocean from the South, and the Arabian Sea from the West. This little area is of great spiritual significance - there is a Hindu temple devoted to Goddess Devi, an island devoted to Vivekananda, a memorial to Gandhi (where some of his ashes are buried), and sacred waters for people to bathe in. I’m not exactly sure why this spot has such great significance, it seems like there are temples on every corner in India, but it is a friendly, serene choice for a weekend getaway. Well, now we've got to Kanyakumari. Narn's got a few days off work now which is nice and well timed to have a look at this area. We're right at the southern tip of the country here, where the arabian, bengal and indian oceans/seas all meet. Its a nice town, and the people are very friendly. After getting off the train at Trivandrum, we were picked by a friend and we took a car down to here - its around 80km in total and took about 2 hours. It was a bit strange because you are driving through populated areas the entire trip (barring around 10km), but the shops and houses only go a little way away from the road and then its into the palm trees. Its really nice to see the palms around here ... read more
