Well, now we've got to Kanyakumari. Narn's got a few days off work now which is nice and well timed to have a look at this area.
We're right at the southern tip of the country here, where the arabian, bengal and indian oceans/seas all meet. Its a nice town, and the people are very friendly.
After getting off the train at Trivandrum, we were picked by a friend and we took a car down to here - its around 80km in total and took about 2 hours. It was a bit strange because you are driving through populated areas the entire trip (barring around 10km), but the shops and houses only go a little way away from the road and then its into the palm trees. Its really nice to see the palms around here too - they are thick and really tall. Everything is green too from the rain.
We got into Kanyakumari in the evening and checked into the Hotel Seaview. We would definitely recommend anyone coming here to stay at the Seaview as its clean, service is great, the rooms are reasonably priced and the hotel restaurant is clean and has good food.
The hotel is around 100m from the beach and you can see the beach and the surrounding area from our room. just of the point, there are two islands, one with a statue on it and one a temple. Back around 1890, a bloke named Vivekanada stopped on the rock to pray on his way to america. So, they built a temple on the spot. We caught the ferry out to here with our fiend who is showing us the sights. Its a neat spot as its just built straight onto the rock, and is quite large. There are good views around the place and it was nice to be in the sea air. Right next to the temple is another small rock island, with a large statue (40m high) of a poet Thiruvalluvar that was built in 2000. Underneath this are 1330 poems on the walls of the monument, each two lines long, extolling different virtues and advice.
Tiana's turn:
I think it turned out that we were the main attraction of the island cause everyone wanted to take our photos, shake their children's hands, and sit near us on the boat. It was pretty funny. We waved
to people and they would laugh and smile. People are very friendly in south india.
On Tuesday we went to a zoo, a museum, art gallery, a couple of temples, and to our friend's home. The zoo was cool and they had an elephant - but i didn't get to ride it 😞. Some lions, tigers, and leopards and other stuff. We got a tour of an art gallery with some famous Indian paintings. We have to take our shoes off everywhere and go bare foot bushman style. The last stop we made for the day was to a beach. It was rough as but people were still swimming in it.
Today we are having a rest day and taking it easy before we get back on the train again tomorrow arvo. We head to Chennai from here and I begin work stuff again.
Putting up some more photos from train and kanyakumari sights...
