While at Kovalam, it turned out that I had an opportunity to witness an apparently special event - that being seeing the sunset and April full moon on the same horizon, at a place called Kanyakumari. It's somewhat of a holy place here, being the southern-most point of India, and pilgrims make the journey down here to bath at the meeting of the Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea. My three-bus journey down there was less well-intentioned - I just wanted the photo that the lonely planet described. The authors made it seem as though there would be a spectacular meeting of the setting sun and rising full moon at a single point on the horizon (or maybe that was just my idealistic interpretation of it). As it turned out, the horizon was ... read more

The early mornings are what we dread most these days. They mean rushed packing and foraging food before getting on to a cramped bus and setting off for hours on some adventurous driving during which no rest is available for fear of cracked heads. But 2 weeks ago we were setting off on our first early morning bus ride. We donned our packs and trudged across the beach, which I might add is pretty hard going in shoes and with heavy bags in the sand. It was hotter than you can imagine for 8am and we were glad to get into the shade at the bus stand. After a while, several buses had come and gone, we realised with the help of a fellow prospective passenger, who luckily was Indian, that the Kanyakumari bus wasn't going ... read more

We ate like kings, neither of us were ill, and we can now whip up a mean curry, southern indian stylee! Parotta (flaky pancakes), fish moily (cocunut curry), dhal fry, kashmiri rice and veg pakora (deep fried, battered veg!). This will be our new signature feast, no more butternut squash risotto! We chilled out a for a few more days in Varkala, although I got lobstered, and couldn't go in the sun very much. We spent a manic afternoon posting a parcel back to the UK, which you have to get stitched up by a tailor, only to get a taxi up the hill to the post office, only to find that parcels weren't accepted after 3pm! Grrr. Still, succeeded the following day and then caught the wrong train from Varkala (having watied at the station ... read more

There's some sort of mental significance to making it to the very bottom, and it's not a bad little place. The bus stand was right next to the train station in Nagercoil and let us right off at our hotel. We had to sway around in the aisle with our bags on until some people got off and cleared a seat, but it cost about 6 Rs for the 20 minute ride - not quite 2 cents. We stayed at the Seaview; not budget but one of the nicest hotels for the price that we've encountered in India. The place is small but jammed with Indian tourists, I think it's a popular spot to visit and also of some religious significance. The many stalls sell the most total junk we've yet encountered; it reminds me of ... read more

Dnes su Vianoce - ja ich pravdepodobne stravim cestovanim v autobuse lebo mame pred sebou 8 hodinovy presun do mesta Pondicherry. Vcerajsia cesta vlakom bola najhorsia v mojom zivote. Ludia boli vsade, na kazdom stvorcovom centimetri - sedeli na zemi, vo vyske na lehatkach, dokonca stali - a to my sme isli iba 4 hodiny - oni cestovali 11 hodin v tychto podmienkach. Deti tu maju prazdniny a vyzera ... read more

This is India’s most southernmost point, where she rises out of the jade sea, at the confluence of the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea, and climbs steadily northward for two thousand miles to the barrier that is greatest mountain range in the world, the Himalayas. I arrived, finally, on Wednesday and found a place to stay near the temple, in the middle of the bazaar. The town rises gently from the shore; adjacent is the old fishing village where none of the higher caste visiting Hindus would ever set foot. Kanyakumari is a place full of people coming to worship at the temple and to visit the monument on the offshore rock where the Swami Vivekananda meditated in 1892. It’s a madhouse, to say the least, beggars and hawkers line the streets to the temple, ... read more

When we arrived in Kanyakumari, I was not fully awake. And when I was fully awake, the train was completely empty. I struggled out into the morning sun, and embarked on the longest platform walk I've done in India. Kanyakumari is at the southern tip of India, where the Indian Ocean, Bay of Bengal, and Arabian Sea meet. Next landfall south, bar a few scattered islands, is Antarctica. It is a sacred place for Hindus, but I had come purely for its geographical significance. Though the best viewing is to be had in April, when the setting sun and rising moon can be seen on the same horizon, I still wanted a sea-facing room, which I had to pay through the nose for. The main sights here are just offshore on 2 rocks - one is ... read more
