This week has been an interesting one. Some days are blurs and some have stood out significantly. I guess the most interesting was to visit a rural community that only has members from a certain high caste living there. We were taken to a local day-care centre where we made a girl cry coz she had never really seen white people before. We were then taken to a local school where we saw some very cute as well as very talented dancers and then met with a local farmer. He had a door frame and door which was all hand carved and was truly beautiful – it was worth 30,000 rupees which is about $667 which is wealth we hadn’t really crossed before. I also ate raw guava-I don’t really rate it! We went on a ... read more

I have no idea where to begin! We’ve been here a little over a week and everyday is full of so much but to some degree things are starting to feel somewhat normal…or maybe I’ve just completely forgotten what normal is! Every morning begins with breakfast at 7am. We’re staying at a place called Mithra that is run by an Australian nun. It’s a school for children with physical and intellectual disabilities and is also connected to a massive church. At breakfast everyone is pretty quiet. We sit next to the sister who says grace and then we eat. We have broken away from the breakfast curry and I now have oats and sultanas and Tess and Darrel have muesli-Tess and I found curry for breakfast quite tough, Darrel however is exited about all the food ... read more

July 12th I had a Lufthansa morning flight to Chennai, India. Arrival time was on July 13th, some 30 minutes after midnight. Pickup service went well, brought me to the hotel (Green Park) within some 20 minutes. The other day we had the subsidiary business meeting, everything went fine. In the evening dinner with the whole team. Location was a pretty nice hotel with paintings on the walls of the hotel lobby, showing highlights of mankind from different continents. On Thursday after hotel check-out - credit card charge in INR and EUR, crossed out EUR and highlighted INR, otherwise you get charged in EUR at pretty bad currency rate - pickup by my colleague, then visiting a customer. Infrastructure of India still to be improved - have been there th efirst time end of 2004 - ... read more

Hey Guys! 2 days ago we said our good byes to all of our brothers and sisters in Coimbatore. We had an amazing time there. God also blessed us with a special treat in that it Coimbatore was about 10 degrees cooler than the previous cites and it was less humid :) On our last day there we had an all Kerala staff meeting. That was a great treat, because it gave us a chance to once again see all of the church leaders we had spent time with in the weeks prior. The entire Kerala staff wanted to make sure that we pass on their love and appreciation for the Detroit Church Disciples! They love all of you very much and are so grateful for your sacrifice in helping to support their churches. That evening ... read more

From what I can tell on the airlines website, the flight from London arrived safely at 3:31am (Chennai time). Keep in mind that India is 9.5 hours AHEAD of us. So happy to know the team is safe on the ground! Now on to Trivandrum! Love to the Team, Jen W... read more

Colombo to Chennai We started our trip to Chennai in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The city bus was a full 2 hours from downtown Colombo, and dropped us 1km from the airport, so after running with our luggage at 9:00pm to a Tuk Tuk who went painfully slow down the dark road to the airport, we finally checked in and got on the plane by 10:00pm. The flight didn't land in Chennai until around midnight. We had a sense of where we wanted to go, but nothing concrete. We figured we'd go somewhere downtown, central, so we could see the sights, etc. Trung has a couple of hotel names ready to give the cabbie. Chennai At the Chennai airport there are several prepaid cabbie companies offering rides for about 400 rupees to go somewhere downtown. The alternative ... read more

Day four. Man oh man is india different! Yesterday going through the city was so interesting. First off the traffic. Man oh man. Basically how it works is the bigger guy has the right away. So pedestrians are bottom of the totem pole. Luckily, my aunt has a good driver, who is super funny and nice as well. He can handle my aunts crazy sense of humor. Its nuts, one minute you look and there is poverty and people living on the street, and a building that looks as if it might collapse its so old and ruined; and the next to it there is a brand new building that is bright and shinny. Most of theses buildings are north american companies, like Levi's Jeans or Puma. The power goes out all the time, and simple ... read more

Day two. Or three. Either way it is my first morning here! My aunt has 6 dogs that all attacked me once I got into the house. They have the cutest little blue house on olive beach! We have already been down to the beach, and I can't believe the size of the waves. Coming in late last night, I have not seen everything yet. but my aunt does feed a bunch of dogs that live outside so I will see some more sights soon!! ... read more

Day one. Well sort of. I'm sitting in YYC in Calgary waiting for my flight. 18 hours of flying by myself. Here to Frankfurt then off to Chennai! Sitting here the anticipation is driving me crazy. I have never been so far away from home in my life, nor spent this much time with my aunt. I haven't even meet my uncle yet!! Even though I am meeting my family there, I feel like I am traveling alone. It is a very weird feeling. Freedom but at the same time nerves. I have no clue what to expect, except extreme culture shock. I started thinking and planning this trip over a year ago, when I met my aunt for the first time (Christmas 2009). So much has changed since then except this dream to make my ... read more

After an uneventful night on the train we arrived in Chennai early in the morning. I got a bit of culture shock returning to a big city and seeing the intense poverty and pollution of Chennai. We checked into our hotel and ate our share of some dodgy Indian style Western food we decided to do some exploring of the city. We walked to Chepauk Stadium and collected our cricket tickets then jumped on the train to go to Kapaleeshwarar Temple. The temple was very impressive with a lot of colour and movement going on. We then wandered to San Thome Cathedral, which houses the tomb of St Thomas, one of the twelve apostles. We then walked down to the beach which was apparently hit hard in the 2004 tsunami. With everything going on in Japan, ... read more
