At last the day has arrived and Pauline and i suitably dressed in our crocodile hunting gear set off in yet another taxi to the Mandovi River in search of the famous "Mugger Crocodiles' We arrived at the river after a journey of about an hour, passing through some dusty old vilages and jungle type scenery. We boarded a rather rickety old boat and with our guide Gupta set off down the tidal river, soon branching off into a small tributary lined with Mangroves and smelling distincly of crocodiles. Itwas not long before Gupta got very excited and pointed to the bank, where to our delight sat the biggest crocodile I had ever seen in my life. Not content with looking from a distance he decided to take us in close and soon we were literally ... read more

Summary: This blog turned out to be longer than I was expecting so just to outline things I've basically written a discription of what I think train journeys are like here, the sorts of things that you see and the people you meet. As mentioned before, after the disaster of missing taxis in Darjeeling, the spectacularly late fashion of my train (over 9hrs) meant that I had finally managed to successfully book a train and get on it myself! It's clear that the train journeys here are going to be one of the most memorable experiences I have here so I thought I'd make another effort to right down what they are like. It turns out that trains don't travel overnight to Assam (This eastern region) due to bandits which would otherwise hold it up and ... read more

We made it to Jaisalmer. The sleeper bus was fine and we transferred to a normal bus in Jodhpur; which, as we've become use to, was late to leave and late to arrive. This happens because the bus stops for approximately 30 minutes every hour and a half without fail (only the private buses, not government buses) and stops to make pick-ups and drop-offs through out. So every bus ride is pretty much twice as long as it should be. Our connecting bus in Jodhpur started with an argument between all the tourists and the Indian bus guy; this included myself the American (Jill somehow slept through this), a German guy, a French family and an Isreali couple (there were Koreans up in there, but they stayed out of it). The details of the argument are ... read more

I took these photos from the car, mostly as we made our trek from Japiur to Agra (in Northern India). Admittedly they are not the greatest photos, but hey, the car was moving! Some of them were taken in a city, I'm not sure which one, probably either Delhi, Jaipur, or Agra. Most of them though, I took when I had my turn in the front seat and Praveen #2, our driver, was taking us the long hard stretch from Jaipur to Agra. I thought I'd try and capture the variety of vehicles that were sharing the road with us. I have another set of photos to post soon that were focused along the roadside, instead of ON it. Note to my family and friends who live in India: I realize you may not be too ... read more

We decided to have a day out and Nilesh our taxi driver arrived at 10.00 a.m. and off we set. Our first port of call was Old Goa, the former capital and we visited 2 large christian churches. The Portugese influence was very obvious and we took the opportunity to visit the attached museum. We then took in a couple of Hindu Temples and I was commandeered by an Indian gentlemen wearing only an orange loincloth and he gave us a guided tour.. As is usual we were bombarded with people trying to sell us all manner of things, but we managed to escape with our purses intact.. We then drove to a cashew nut factory passingsmall shops on every cornere and some beautiful jungle type scenery. The factory employed about 70 girls earning oabout 60 ... read more

From Fatehpur Sikri, it was a bad and bumpy road to Jaipur. NH 11, as it was called was anything but that and I just hoped and prayed that we reach our destination in one piece, as there were heavy vehicles on the single lane road driven ruthlessly by careless drivers. It was sundown when we reached Jaipur and checked into the JaiMahal palace hotel. The hotel was swarmed with foreigners and we were perhaps the only local Indian guests there! The next morning we met our tourist guide Mr. Vijay all dressed up in a suit who spoke very highly of his hometown. He took us first to the Jantar Mantar observatory built by the erstwhile Rajput ruler, Raja Sawai Jai Singh the Second, also the founder of the city of Jaipur, which has the ... read more

PS: I forgot to tell you that "Hotel California" is playing overhead. Before that was "Summer of 69." It is fun to be able to sing along, and look across at the Indian guy in the turban at the computer across from me and see him singing along too!... read more
