On the last day of the year, we visited three temples around Bikaner. The first day, we visited a busy Vishnu temple in Bikaner. The approach was lined with beggars waiting patiently with their bowls for visitors to offer them coin and food on their way out. There was a parking lot for this temple, if you can believe it. We hid our money in our clothes and removed our shoes and cameras. We were still wearing our socks to cross the gravelly parking area to the white stone steps of the temple, where many worshippers were to be seen that morning. One man yelled us for wearing socks, so we quickly removed them. I followed all the actions of Hukam (our driver), from putting a hand to the steps and then to my forehead, to ... read more

Happy New Year!! It is 3:15 and lunch has been eaten at a Lebonese Bakery. Breakfast has been a lovely buffet at the Ibis Hotel, a known chain from Europe and no disappointment as far as value, service and cleanliness goes. I am presently in a Surf'n'Eat in Style C@fe net. The whole enterprise consisting of twenty glasstop tables with a rolling keyboard tray and a computer under each glass sheet. One hour costs 5dirhams; 2hrs 8dirhams. We get 4 dirhams per $. Not a bad deal! The plane was so delayed that we did not arrive at the hotel until 02:30. It was already Dec29. The plane ride from Frankfurt was especially luxurious as compared to the dirty conditions and sad food presenttions of Air Canada. On the first day we took the Big Bus ... read more

i am now writing on a very sticky keyboard in jodhpur. Travelling with a driver so far has been both a blessing and a curse. First, the positives - we have a level of accessibility into indian culture. We have dined at roadside dhabas together, visited hindu temples, and had a helpful interpreter at the tailor's and when we met tribal people on the road to bikaner. he also got us into a crumbling haveli in the village of Fatehpur and interpreted for us with the guard of the home. Being in a car means that you can go anywhere you want, stop whenever you want, and be able to get away if needed. but for the same reason, we have not had the opportunity to explore on our own the streets of the cities, the ... read more

STOP PRESS: We'll we are about two weeks in, but we are moving so fast that there's not much time for blogging (and a lot of places are slooooow...bring back Bolivia !!!). We are in Kerala now...so may have some time to catch up on a few blogs....Sorry about that folks.... Well..here we are again...it's blog time. So, we ended up back in the UK for a whirlwind Christmas after a fantastic trip around South America. How privileged we are to have experienced all the things we did....it won't be forgotten in a hurry. Great time at Xmas with everyone at the 'Wortham' friends xmas and equally with our Mum's and Dad's at the 3rd Ockendon Road Christmas celebrations. But...it was a quick and brief visit...and just as we'd started to settle into the way of ... read more

Hey Guys, please sit back, take a break from your daily office grind and read up on our latest update in India! Indian Body Language... Everywhere we go, the locals have gone out of their way to help us out, from the Train station to bus stop directions, even when to get off or where to find our way back. Every conversation/ question we are faced with a head wobble at the end of it. We think it means no, but we've now figured out that it means yes and that all things are good!! They also shake their heads to mean No which made it very confusing at the beginning. They never nod their heads like we do in Australia to mean yes. I've become an expert at the head wobble myself just so they ... read more

My birthday was a very full day, in the way that only travel can make it. We began in Jhunjhunum, skipping the western breakfast our hotel offered, and drove to Mandawa. Here,we saw so many crumbling havelis and we asked our driver to stop so that we could take pictures. We did not go into these because he did not know the owners. I suspect that we could have knocked, but I am ever polite. In Fatehpur, we did stop to visit an old haveli in the process of restoration. A wizened old man in a green shawn with a white turban allowed us into the enclosure. The first coutyard has beautiful paintings of elephants. One goes through an elaborately carved wooden door into another courtyard. Traditionally, visitors would have to wait in the outer courtyard, ... read more

We begin the day in the capital city of Delhi, make our way through the endless mustard fields of Haryana, and finally arrive in the dusty towns of northwest Rajasthan. December 29th, 2005 We met our new driver, Hukam, and tied our suitcases to the rack on top of the car. We would tie and untie those suitcases many times over the next few weeks. I was really worried that the suitcases wouldn't stay on top of the car. I also had an irrational worry that a passing elephant would poo on the suitcases. That turned out to be an ill-founded concern as there were very few elephants about. My last concern, that the bags would be stolen from atop the car was also unfounded. Perhaps the tiny locks helped, but I think it's just that ... read more

I arrived in Jaipur after an interesting 7 hour bus ride on Tuesday night. The bus turned out to be a fairly standard Indian bus. It cost 140 rupees ($3.50) for the 250km trip from Agra to Jaipur. The bus was crowded - all the seats were taken, plus the bench around the driver. People stood in the aisles, and I suspect that there were people on the roof. I sat in the front, which is a rather thrilling place to be on an Indian bus. It is slightly more comfortable, because of the bumps being lessened at the front, BUT you can see everything that is happening, which is SCARY. We took awhile to get out of Agra, and then took a "highway" west. The highway was mostly paved, sometimes had a 'center' line (though ... read more

The new backpack was not appropriate; sandles, sleeping bag and fleecy jacket all hanging on to the outside....so .....back to my Jack Wolfskin designed for a woman's figure ... it fits very well, it is comfortable and everything fits inside with room to spare. All the stuff weighs 14.5 kilos and the day pack comes in at 3k. Fridge defrosted, garbage wrapped up, electrical heaters cleared of obstructive objects , thermostat set at 10 degrees celcius, keys to the neighbours, hot water tank shut down, and every electric plug pulled. Only the freezer and the heating will guzzle power for the next two months. The Hydro bill will determine wether or not I embark on a trip this time of year again! The drive to Toronto should take 4.5 to 5 hours. All depends on ... read more

All things required for the nine week journey are now strewn upon the dining table; sleeping bag, water pills, quick drying clothes, safety pins, needles, thread, waterbottle, purification tablets, dental hygiene products, first aid stuff, books to read and hand sanitizer, etc, etc, etc. With great anticipation and holding my breath, I hope it all fits with room to spare. Things will be left behind ... but what ... oh the decisions, the decisions, the decisions .... once on the plane the trip will be in motion, worries will be left behind and new ones will be confronted. At this writing Christmas dinner is on top of the to-do-list; M&M ordurvees, cheeseballs covered in nuts, liver dumpling soup, duck not goose, red cabbage, basmati rice, a myriad of home baked cookies, Viennese coffee, eggnog spiked ... read more
