Geo: 19.048, 73.0828On January 4th, 2006, we boarded our first of many Indian Railway trains. As we rushed on, heaved our bulky bags under the seat and chained them so they wouldn't walk off during the night, we thought, are we getting too old to do this? We were in the 3-AC compartment. That means, 3-tier, air-conditioned or 6 people to one compartment where the seats transform into 3 bunks on each side of the compartment for bedtime. That doesn't count the two other beds along the long side of the train. Our train left at 7pm and around an hour later, the "bed roll attendant," as noted on his uniform, came through to issue us our clean sheets, blanket, towel and pillows for the night. We settled in and met our neighbors - all businessmen ... read more

The homesickness began a few days ago in Ranakpur, when I dreamed of eating a Mcdonald's hamburger. It increased in Bundi, when Alli and I ended up finally talking about the issues with India. But then we had a good day in Bundi. But our hotel in Sawai Madhopur (Ranthambhore) was the last straw. We had another sleepless night on hard beds in a cold room. Since we had already seen three tigers, we chose to leave early and go to Jaipur. I don't know if I mentioned that we ate at a very fancy hotel the night before - the Sawai Madhopur Lodge run by the Taj group. It was our first step towards making this all more bearable, now that India has finally gotten to me. I didn't realize how much it had until ... read more

Next stop is Pushkar. It's quite a small town with a pop. of 15k (for comparisons, the prior stop at Jaipur was 2.3 million - which is quite big for any country). Pushkar surrounds a lake (a holy lake) and there are certain rules - no alcohol (tough for Roy), no meat or eggs, no public displays of affection (Jill was very upset by this one). Our hotel - Seventh Heaven - is amazing. Room isn't spectacular (could use some central heating) but the building is an old haveli which in general is a building with a open interior (like a courtyard). We woke up each morning and walked to the white marble rooftop to get our breakfast and read in the morning sun. Very relaxing. Food is also good but eggs would have been nice. ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Jodhpur January 8th 2006

Ok...another one in quick succession...not going to write much as I'm boooored of bloging (but it's still raining in Kerala so not much else to do - I can hear you all sobbing for us). So..Jodhpur...another fanastic town and a great set of things to see. It's different again to Jaipur etc., largely due to the smaller number of tourists not on the Dehli/Agra/Jaipur route. Anyway, we pitched up at the hotel and got ourselves into the luxury tents...check out the pictures. Bit of a laugh...but the last laugh went to the mozzies. Anyway, up early and off to the Mehrangarh Fort. What a stupendous place...talk about towering over the city. Another Indian suprise...they had a fantastic MPEG audioguide, brilliant stuff all the way round with tales of the Maharajas and so on. A walk around ... read more

I’d hoped to update my blog this morning but, just as we arrived at the cybercafé, it was this district’s turn for its daily two-hour power cut. We could have gone in search of another café in a neighbouring district which might have had power but thought better of it and went to find somewhere to change some travellers’ cheques instead. The observant among you will note that my earlier blogs have since been updated with photos (on my return home!). We said our thanks and goodbyes to Jai Singh when he dropped us off at the railway station in good time for our train to Mumbai (Bombay), leaving just after 14.00. He had proved to be a good and reliable driver - I can certainly recommend him to anyone planning to hire a car in ... read more

Its all happening now, we have booked our adventure to Delhi, Agra and Jaipur for week commencing 16 January and a visit to some famouse Goan temples and a spice plantation for next Tuesday. We are going to a hippie market tonight but will be keeping off the waccy! We had a superb curry last night probably the best we have ever had and all for a couple of quid. Today we took a twenty minute bus ride to Betim in a 50 year old bus packed full of Indians, but it only cost about 4 pence. We then caught a very ancient ferry across to the former capital of Goa, a place called Panjim. We found Panjim quite boring because it was just like any other town in the world apart from millions of people, ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Ranthambhore National Park January 7th 2006

Today we visited Rathambore National Park. This was the park that President Clinton visited on his trip to India, and it is one of the parks where you are most likely to see a tiger. It is no guarantee however, as of the many acres of parkland set aside, visitors can only see a small part and there are only a few dozen tigers left. Sadly, poachers have been killing these gorgeous creatures for Chinese medicine and their skins. Knowing this, we did not fully expect to see a tiger at all. Some people stay for weeks and never do. We arrived in the afternoon and were disappointed to find that Hotel Tiger Safari Resort was a concrete block hotel, and our room was dank, dim, and windowless. One saving grace was that it has afternoon ... read more

Our next stop was Pushkar, a small, highly religous town where they believe in the healing powers of the lake waters. We arrived at about midday to find, again, that our prebooked rooms had been given away to someother people! As the hotel was beautiful and had the most amazing terrace overlooking the lake we were determined to stay there no matter what. The only room available for our 1 night stay was a delux room that we all 4 to share! After waiting to speak to the manager for over an hour, Lou quite literally told the manager how much we were going to pay and no messing and we were in and lapping up the luxury! The moment we stepped out of the hotel we were immediately handed a flower by guys standing on ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Bundi January 6th 2006

We are currently in Bundi. This is in a little-known corner of Rajasthan. From Udaipur, we travelled northwest through the abandoned fort at Chittogarh and many small towns and narrow roads to Bundi. Chittorgarh was an unexpected stop. As it was on our way, our driver mentioned we should stop at Chittor is supposedly the best fort in Rajasthan - but aren't they all "the best fort in Rajasthan"? Chittorgarh was the Mewar capitol before the move to Udaipur. The city was sacked by Akbar (Mughal) at last in the 17th century, and the buildings destroyed. The way they do it here, the Rajputs, is that when besieged and it is not likely that they can win the battle, all of the women put on their wedding saris, put their handprints on the wall, and run ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Ranakpur January 6th 2006

Now where did I get to? Oh yes, we'd arrived to a very warm welcome at the Maharani Bagh Orchard Retreat. Perhaps I should first tell you a bit about this hotel. It's located near Ranakpur, a famous Jain pilgrimage site, and is owned by the royal family of Jodhpur. The garden ("bagh") and orchards were laid out by the Maharani of Jodhpur in the 19th century and the cottages in the grounds were converted to hotel accommodation in more recent times. Since our visit in 1997, a new accommodation wing has been added and an indoor restaurant and larger swimming pool are now nearing completion. None of the new hotels in the area can boast of century-old gardens to compare with those here, nor with its authentic atmosphere; it is truly a haven of tranquility. ... read more
