Woke up very excited today because I was going tiger spotting. Booked the afternoon safari though as I fancied a lie in. So didn't emerge from my room until about 10:00 and went and ordered some pancakes and honey which I half expected the Indians to mess up but were actully very scrummy. (I ordered french fries once and they came out as blackened bits of uncooked potato.) 14:00 soon rolled around and my canter turned up to take me on safari. I met a friendly guy from belgium named marco on the safari and we swapped e-mails to meet up in Goa for christmas. (didn't get a photo of him though.) The Safari was cool. Lots of amazing scenery and different animals to spot. We saw not 1 but 2 tigers which I was well ... read more

Left the hotel nice and early and made our way to Ranthambhore national park. Checked in to the Tiger Safari Hotel which had the biggest room so far but the grubbiest showers. We travelled on more dusty roads and I got a good picture of a herd of cows that blocked the road. This journey took 7 hours with only one stop. Arrived at my hotel and did some more washing and got a photo of it this time since Nicki does not believe me. Ate dinner with a group of Swedish people. ... read more

Ranthambore National Park is located about 30 km outside of a small town called Sawai Madhopur. It covers 1334 sq km of open land, in which there are approximately 30 tigers who roam free alongside deer, monkeys, crocodiles, and over 300 species of birds. Also within the park are the 10th century Ranthambore Fort and several dilapidated mosques and temples. Tiger spotting is the thing to do in Ranthambore. The park is divided into 5 zones and each jeep uses a lottery system to decide which zone they will explore; there are also options as to how big a jeep you want and whether an early morning safari or afternoon safari is preferred. Our first safari was in the afternoon in a big jeep with about 20 other people. Needless to say, it wasn't a very ... read more

Day 22 Today we had an early start to makew the 6 hour jouney to Rathombore National Park. We had a stop on route to Fatepur Sikri where we saw yet another Fort! Then 5 hours later we arrived in Rathombore, after a bumpy ride for me in the back in the back of our A/C jeep. Our hotel was set in a jungle them,e, complete with pool, and A/C that didn't work, and time limits on the hot water. Our first safari was at sunset. Mum was in her element she found two other ladies (they convinved themselves the were all Memsabs, and acted like them too) similar age, attitude and one from the Uist's and one from Bath. Anway they were complaining the whole journey about the heat, the noise, the children, and anything ... read more

Our first outing with my parents was to Ranthambhore National Park....we were heading to Khem Villas and planned on enjoying both an early morning and an afternoon Safari. The day didn't really begin as planned.....see excerpts from my mom's journal entry: "Let me just say that we have had some experiences that I cannot do justice to in an e-mail. But, never-the-less I will give you a quick synopsis. The train to reach Ranthambor was really something. First of all....if anyone wants to REALLY see India , they should spend 3 hours at the Delhi train station! Our train was 3 hours late getting to us...no one knew why, and really, no mention was made of it so we sat and watched the events unfold. It was priceless. All the dirt and shit (and I mean ... read more

After our delayed departure we arrived on the train in relatively good spirits. The train car we were situated in were not exactly the “first class” options we were looking for…but it was relatively clean and - as long as the train started to move in the right direction we were happy! Still recovering from illness I crashed on the top bunk for a few hours. The rest of the crew looked out the window/read travel books and consulted the map. We were interrupted quiet frequently with men walking up and down the isles offering Chi and other food goodies. My theory is that they just couldn’t get enough of the western family traveling on their train. So despite saying no to every one of their offerings, they continued to come back time and time again. ... read more

Ok hello again, sorry now in China so am going to do a very quick run down of the latest events to get to the present. So continuing from the last entry, we went to this beautiful white marble mosque- on retrospect the most superior of them all, it was stunning, we were abvle to sit and look at the colourfull stain glass windows inside the temple and absorb the atmosphere......... Next day we went to the city palace in Jaipur which was cool, they had this huge urn that was in the guiness book of records for being the largest silver craft peice- some years ago now though. There were displays of heavily embroidered robes etc of the royalty- so intricate and it took for some items months at a time to make say a ... read more

After not being able to book train tickets to go up to Corbett Park we spoke to our driver and decided that our only option to see tigers in our short time left in India was to extend our tour and go to Ranthanbhore national park back in Rajasthan. The day we arrived in Ranthanbhore park was the hottest day so far with temperatures as high as 48 degrees Celsius. You could fry and egg on the top of the car!! After checking into the Tiger Safari resort we spoke to other travelers and realized that the best way of getting on a safari was booking through the hotel. So we secured our place for the morning safari for 700 rs (£9.00) each. The next morning we were up at 5am to go on our ... read more

We had a very relaxing stay in Ranthambore National Park over the past few days, relaxing and going on safari. The drive from Jaipur was a little...hectic, but we made it ok. The place we were staying in had a pool, so that was the first stop. We relaxed for the rest of the day, mostly near the pool, and checked out a wedding that was going on near our hotel at night. It was right in the middle of the street, with a band and dancing. It was certainly an experiance. The next afternoon (after a fair amount of pool time) we got in a canter (an open air bus that seats 25) and headed into the park. We saw a tiger (albeit from a distance), monkeys, a few different types of deer, some ... read more

Friday the 13th turned out to be amazingly lucky for us. Despite all the expected delays from all the known quarters, we managed to get out from office with our backpacks slung on our back. People stared at us, the 5 adventurers ready for their wild Rajasthan safari, with envy written on their faces. The team of five are out on yet another trip. This time we are out to enjoy the wilderness of Rajasthan. Our destination was Ranthambore, a tiger reserve, which is about 8 hours drive from Delhi. This used to be the hunting grounds for the Ranas (the kings) of that particular region of Rajasthan. Now it is protected as a national park. The drive to Ranthambore was mostly uneventful except for the fact that for two of us it was the ... read more
