After my rather disastrous camel trip in the desert I arrived in Jaisalmere a bit fraught and not in the best of moods. Consequently I headed to the one hotel that the lonely planet said would be hassle free (Hotel Swastika), which it was. It took me a while to find though because no one would tell me how to get there. Everyone told me it was either miles away or closed, and then all offered to take me to their brothers/cousins/uncles place instead (the whole of Rajasthan must be related). Thankfully a friendly Chai Wallah took pity on me and showed me the correct alley to go down and I arrived in time to watch the end of Sri Lanka’s innings in the world cup final. At which point I began to feel much better. ... read more

Namaste, (Friends & Family) The Wheels on the Bus: It was midnight. I stood on the dusty edge of Pushkar sweating like a hooker in church awaiting what was to be my fate for the next nine hours. The street mutts asleep adjacent to my luggage did not even make mention of the sputtering engine from the infamous Indian sleeper bus that was to be my mode of transportation into the far west reaches of Rajahstan. Anyone who has read any of my previous posts knows how much I love riding the bus (not really). I actually try to avoid them like the plague, but more often than not you have no choice. After many failed attempts to bring the iron beast to life, some of the locals piled out of the cab and began to ... read more

Monday 3-7 to Wednesday 3-9 As I write this, we are on another overnight train, headed back to Delhi from Jaisalmer. Chatty Cathy (a.k.a. Nick) is currently in the next bunk over, charming some ladies from Canada. I think it’s great that he’s so sociable and loves to talk to strangers (a gene I definitely lack) but good god this boy doesn’t know when to quit. He’s so friendly and gregarious that he stops to talk to everyone, including the scammers that stop him on the street. I’ll ignore them and keep walking only to stop and realize that Nick is well behind me, talking about Costa Rica or how much he loves the current country he’s in. Just say no! I feel the need to take his wallet each time this happens because he will ... read more

QUEEN FOR A MOMENT This cobbled road winds upward into Jaisalmer Fort, its sand-yellow ramparts of Jurassic sandstone thrusting skyward, the desert sands transformed. Residents, itinerant merchants, and travelers pack into the constricted meandering laneways of India’s “Golden City”. Against towering bastions, these two youngsters amused themselves. Likely unaware of tragic historic events, they played between the second gate, where traitors and criminals were thrown into the “death well”, and the main square, where royal women chose death at the hands of their husbands who faced imminent defeat on the battlefield, rather than dishonourable rape by conquering troops. Seated nearby upon brilliantly coloured blankets strewn with sparkling silver jewellery, their mothers eked out a living. Throughout Rajasthan we witnessed similar scenes: adults working, children creating their... read more

I had to endure the longest trip of my life: 18 whole hours on one train. Getting on the correct train and finding my bed was a challenge in itself. The train had to be at least half a mile long and the locals' ability to speak English seemed to disappear when I asked them. Finally I found my slab that was to be my home for three quarters of a day. Getting my head down was hard to come by too. I was far to concerned with my valuables being pinched that I remained awake for the first eight hours of the trip. Not only was sleep difficult, going to the the toliet was like a battle. Taking valuables inside a room where there was just a hole in the floor and trying to keep ... read more

So we arrived in Jaisalmer at 5.30am, slept on the train, gotta love sleeper berths! We were picked up by Karim, one of the employees of the hotel we stayed at called Desert Moon. There was a lot of water on the ground and Karim said that it had rained during the day, rain in a desert, who knew. He showed us to our rooms and off to bed we went for another 3 hours sleep, hooray! We woke up for breakfast and it felt like we’d been in Jaisalmer for a night already. We wandered into Jaisalmer Fort which is apparently under threat of being eroded by the water being used by the inhabitants of the fort. We did a tour of Maharaja’s Palace – there is a lot of restoration being undertaken here to ... read more

The Razzle Dazzle of Jaisalmer Known as the Golden City, Jaisalmer is very sandy! Sand being gold..ish in colour, and you've got your treasured title! Best thing in Jaisalmer..... had to be the 'Trotters Independent Travelers' stand with the leader 'DelBoy' selling Camel trips to travelers/holidaymakers. We had the decision to do either a full robust Camel trek which would be a minimum of 2 days and 1 night, or.. for the more skeptical (Camels spit, fart and may hurt the buttocks) a romantic Sunset Safari. It being our first time, we chose the latter and good thing too as being British we brought with us the overcast clouds and a little touch of drizzle, so the Very Romantic Sunset was covered by fine Grey Cloud, a little like the weather at home! :) Camel Trekking ... read more

So we decided to make use of the festival and head to desert for a camel ride and see what the 'nice programmes' we heard so much about entailed. Cue Laura in fits of laughter as I made my way on the back of this spitting camel. Anyone that knows me knows I am not an animal person- particularly after the mini panic attack that time I was on an elephant in Thailand (which again entertained Laura). She is au-fait with all this 'riding animal' behaviour... growing up in Wales prepares you for this type of thing. The only experience I had was when my uncle tied me to the Kyza the dog when I was bout 4. So we were on the camel for an hour anyway. The novelty wore off after about 20 minutes. ... read more

After moving out of the crack den we made our way to a spanking hotel just over the road- just over a fiver a night between us. It didn't smell of a sewer and had a mirror- bonus! As usual, the city is built round a fort- only in Jaisalmer there's shops and hotels within the fort, rather than it just being used as a tour/ museum/ monument place. So, we went into the fort for the day and we found where all the tourists were hiding! Not that it makes much difference, me and Laua are not the most sociable on this holiday- the type of tourists that India attracts are the type of people that we tend to avoid! Within the fort it looks quite European- Italian even. Tonnes of Italian restaurants! Got some ... read more
