Geo: 26.9118, 70.9127We decided not to rent bikes and instead spend more time in the fort and the old city. We hired a guide at the entrance of the fort – 'Sikh'. He was very good and provided very detailed explanations of the history of the fort; the main palace and the Jain temples that are within the fort. All are quite incredible. The fort was built in 1156 by the Rajput ruler Jaisala. It is called the Golden City because of the color of the sandstone used both in ancient times and today. To the untrained eye, it can be quite difficult to tell what is old and what is new unless it is not inhabited. The ancient architecture is amazing with intricate carvings in the stone, beautiful balconiers and canopies, all of this golden sandstone. ... read more

Geo: 26.9118, 70.9127The train trip from Delhi to Jaisalmer is 921 km and took about 17 ½ hours. Sounds daunting but we slept a lot and the time seemed to go by without incident. We traveled in an AC2 sleeper car. This means there are 4 berths – 2 upper and 2 lower per sleeper area. India Rail provides clean sheets; pillows and very warm blankets. The toilets are ok, in that they only get used by the passengers in that car and therefore, stay relatively clean. 'Clean' is a very relative term in India. You have to just let it go.Once in Jaisalmer we got settled in at the Shahi Palace. We had a yummy lunch on the rooftop restaurant – great view of the old fort. We then set out exploring. We first went ... read more

Monday 12th December ’11 Train to Jaisalmer contd I went to sleep on the top bunk, having braved the stinky squat toilet one last time and praying I wouldn’t need it again during the night! I went out like a light then suddenly bam! The lights were all on and people were shouting…… we had stopped at another station! I tried to ignore it all but realised I was freezing cold so re wrapped the blanket round me and fortunately I was soon fast asleep again. I woke up about 8 am so I was pleased with that and just laid there putting off the inevitable visit to the loo! When I opened the curtains and climbed down I got a surprise when I realised that the Indian family opposite had vanished and been replaced with ... read more

Driving all day through the searing heat of the arid Thar desert, we eventually reached our destination around 9pm - Jaisalmer, the golden city. Just before our departure chris was more than happy to discover that a young travel sick child had thrown up on his backpack! Upon arrival we were met at the bus station by a jeep which was to take us to Hotel Peacock having been told back in Johdpur by a tout that this place was cheap, brand new (having only opened 20 days prior to our arrival) and owned by a Dutch lady . . we were later to discover that none of this was true and that they had no rooms available! We were assured that there were rooms available at their sister hotel just around the corner, so together ... read more

Udaipur to Jaisalmer The bus to Jaisalmer is... interesting. Its a 12 hour journey through mountains overnight. There are no A/C buses, but we're on a sleeper at least. The sleeper bus has sliding windows on both the inside and outside of our +1 bunks. You can close them both and be in a coffin of tinted windows, or you can open the exterior and have only a small bar to hold you from falling out onto the road. Its too hot to have the window closed, so all night I'm paranoid of my backpack falling out the open window. The window is literally level with the bunk and there is only a small bar to hold you in! At about dawn, the bus stops in Jodhpur, about 2/3 of the way to Jaisalmer. The driver ... read more

Week 3! Hi, sorry for the lack of updates on here, Jodhpur was not the most amazing experience. Rhian was sick for 2 days there and there's not a lot to do there except go to the Fort (which is amazing!) We left there on a bus bound for Jaisalmer, 6 hours on a half decent coach that as the journey went on got more and more full to the point of collapse! It was fun though, buying fried snacks through the window, chatting to the guy in front of us about Enrique inglesias (Enreek..) and pop music in general. He was heading to Jaisalmer on a job for the Indian Air Force! Anyway we arrived at around 4pm and before we were even off the coach we were getting accosted by tuk tuk drivers and ... read more
