When we got off the train in Jaisalmer, the owner of the guest house we'd booked, Hotel Mirage, was waiting for us with a big smile and a sign that said "Kelly Hepo." In Agra, it was Hoda...Scott said I'd better get used to people butchering my name, haha. In any case, our new host introduced himself as Ba, paid for our rickshaw and accompanied us to Jaisalmer Fort, where the guest house was located. Though the Fort is quite old, it still functions like its own little neighborhood, with homes, hotels, and alleys lined with shops. Our driver dropped us off at the Fort's gate and Ba carried my heavy pack the rest of the way. He then showed us to our room, which was very nice, especially for only 250 rupees a night, and ... read more

Jaisalmer is in the very west of Rajasthan, in the Thar Desert. There is, once more, a fort on a hill above the city, this time all in yellow, the same colour as most houses have. So while Jodhpur is the Blue City, Jaisalmer is the Golden City. On Tuesday morning, Mizzi and I visited the fort that dates from the 17th century. What makes it different from all the other forts we had seen so far is the fact that it is still inhabited. This means that there is a part of it that has been turned into a museum, but the rest of the fort is full of shops and restaurants as well as temples, and of course there are people who live there. This turned it into a lively place, and after our ... read more

Miestami prechadzali tavi do klusu. Cestou sme minali ovce a kravy. Vcera sme videli aj mini antilopy abo co to bolo. Na konecne nas uz cakala dalsia skupina. Vymenili sme ... read more

Jedlo drahe a mini porcia. Lepsiu cenu nedostala. Po jedle sme sa premiestnili pred brany pevnosti kde ... read more

Vcera som zas nemohol zaspat, nervozite pred cestou.

Blog 26-31 January: Rajasthan II - Jaisalmer and Udaipur "Talking talking, sitting sitting, eating eating" We arrived in the early morning dark in Jaisalmer, after the night train, to a mob of touts absolutely desperate to stick placards in our faces and convince us to go to their hotels. It's probably the closest we'll ever get to feeling like celebs with out of control paparazzi. We escaped back into the station to await the arrival of our hotelier who was due to pick us up but had been asleep. We woke up at lunchtime to the view from the rooftop restaurant of a sandstone fort looming out of the rock and turrets reaching for the sky like pert meerkats watching out for intruders. This is the first fort we had seen that is packed with inhabitants. ... read more

Jaipur So at 4.15am ish Pradhan our driver takes us very slowly to the station at Agra Fort – 5 kms away – in very dense fog with very limited street lighting (and no heating in the car or windscreen wipers that work!) and we get an AC Chair Car to Jaipur 4 hours away. Unfortunately Lou is not feeling too good again but she copes really well. The journey itself is not much to write about but it’s a cheap and convenient way to travel in India during the day – cleaner and less chaotic than a bus. Arriving ½ hour late we await the pick up from The Shahar Palace Guest House folk (free on offer as it’s only a km from the station) but the owner’s son – playing Polo in Jodhpur – ... read more
