So here we are on day one of my trip to India for my friend Khushbu's wedding and then to Dubai and Thailand. When I left on Sunday night from Vegas it still did not feel real that I was headed to the other side of the world and wouldn't be "home" for the next two weeks. When thinking about it while sitting at the airport I got a little home-sick, partly because I was tired. And partly because my "home" situation has drastically changed recent and I am not sure how I feel about. I can get more into that later when I can better put into words how I feel. The flight from vegas was fine. I got to New York at 8am and met up with my business partner Tim. I am glad ... read more

We wondered last night what the Hill Fort Kesroli was going to serve us for dinner, as the Delhi-wallahs had all left and Sara and I were the only guests, so clearly there would be no buffet dinner. Well they solved the problem by serving us all fifteen dishes that were on the buffet but in individual dishes. We tried most of them except the brown-red mutton rogan josh with whole red chillies in it. Not in the mood for that one with a possibly wobbly stomach. Off to Delhi this morning. Delhi seems to start about sixty miles from its centre these days. Banks of new apartment blocks, many of them still in the early stages of construction, line the highway, together with massive office blocks bearing the familiar names of multinational businesses. We are ... read more

Our first 12 hours in India would not exactly have sold the idea of an Indian holiday to anyone who’d not already been there. After a comfortable and uneventful flight we landed in Delhi at 1.20am. We made our customary charge off the plane in an effort to reach immigration before it got too crowded and were delighted to find a short queue for business and first class passengers. Sadly, once we reached the desk, we were told that because we had e-visas we had to go to the desks at the far end of the hall. There, the queue was inevitably longer, as each person had to photographed and give a full set of electronic fingerprints. This caused great confusion to the plane load of Chinese tourists who had landed just before us! Our suitcases ... read more

Left Agra early and headed back to Delhi, we have done a huge big circle on this trip, the road from Agra to Delhi is pretty perfect, nearly all freeway so a good run back into Delhi, about a 3 hr drive but stopped midway for a coffee break. Looking forward to getting back to the Crowne Plaza, a very comfy hotel. After lunch we headed in the central Delhi area to the Chandni Chowk Market area to the spice market, before arriving at the spice market we were asked did anyone have asthma or any sort of lung problems!! The fumes of all the varieties of chilli etc is unbelievable, even some of us who are used to chilli, had a few coughing fits! There are just hundreds of huge sacks of chilli and all ... read more

Well the Crowne Plaza was a very welcome place at 12.30a.m. after travelling for 24 hours - we were wrecked - lovely hot shower and straight to bed for a few hours. Thankful our bags made it with 3 plane changes. Up early Monday morning down for buffet breaky - it was fantastic - so many choices and very yummy what we had. Then we had decided to head out for the day and catch the Metro into old Delhi, but a little tuk, tuk driver coerced us into going with him, which in the end turned out to be a good move - $10 for about 6hrs taking us all over Delhi. So far so good, thought that Delhi would have been much worse that it is - there are so many green spaces around ... read more

It was about to get very real. I was arriving at a destination that is up there on most travelers' lists, and especially those who are backpacking. India. It had been on my list for far too long now and it was about time that I was going to be experiencing it. I envisioned many ups and downs but I was sure that the reality would be far more interesting than anything I could ever imagine. And therein lies the charm that brings back countless travelers time and again to the subcontinent. My finnair flight made the final descent into what was arguably some of the thickest fog I could imagine. Being that it was January, this was considered the winter in Northern India. The capital of New Delhi was also known to experience extreme amount ... read more

Chennai: Oh India! As I sit here in the chill out zone of Red Lollipop Hostel, at the time of writing the only hostel in Chennai, vainly trying to bring my blogging up to date, I think back over the last 20 hours and the things I’ve seen and experienced. India certainly seems to be the country that was painted to me by fellow travellers over the years – beautiful and bewildering, awesome and awful, delicious and devious! It all started last night, arriving late on the AirAsia flight from Bangkok’s Don Muang Airport. I thought I was in luck when I wound up making friends with a French guy and Dutch guy at arrivals to share a taxi with to the centre of town. After more than a fair share of faffing around ... read more

Personal Reflections on our Northern India & Nepal Journey - 9 November to 7 December 2015 We arrived back in Australia on time at 8.10am, after flying with China Southern from Delhi to Guangzhou (China) to Brisbane. It's a good flight because we left Delhi at 12.30 pm and we gain 4.5 hours so it is a short night. The overall reflection was of amazement, enjoyment, strong cultural experience, must go back and experience southern India, which we hear is very different to northern India. Some tell us we must see more of northern India. Here are our detailed reflections, India first as the 2 countries are very different: Extraordinary colour, smells, constant horns b... read more

Day 29 - flying solo in Delhi I got up at about 7am, it's strange not having Helen snoring away in the other bed! I got ready and went in for breakfast. Hmmm... The room is full of men only, that seems strange after all my previous breakfast experiences. All men, and no Helen to chat to! No worries, I get on with getting some cornflakes, toast and jam, I even managed a black tea, although he did have to get it specially for me. It's not so regular here. It's all about the very sugary, very milky chai! The man at the hotel desk has offered to get me a SIM card sorted for my phone. It's no quite so simple here as it has been everywhere else, they need a copy of my passport, ... read more

Sitting on the plane we were both apprehensive about India. Sad to be leaving south east asia but aware that we were going to begin a whole new adventure in India. We spoke excitedly to each other about all the things we were looking forward to: the food, the intricate and beautifully designed forts and palaces. The vibrancy of streets, the colour, and the fact that it leaves its visitors with extreme opinions either completely loving it or vowing never to return. We questioned what sort of impression we would form. Were we going to love it or hate it? Were we going to be scammed or resist the scammers? Will we want to extend our stay or book the next flight out of there? Being all too well informed about the dodgy taxis in Delhi ... read more
