Our "big trip" this year was taking us to India again, to be more precise, to a small northern part of India. But it was unlike any other trip we have made so far. Both of us have been on a pilgrimage with our living spiritual master Paramahamsa Vishwanandain the last years. We had made these trips independent as one of us always had to take care of our company. But this time, there was a chance of going together. As on such a pilgrimage, you cannot just join a group and book it. We had to apply for the pilgrimage and Paramahamsa Vishwananda decided personally who could join. And we were both so very lucky to be able to come with him. But that was not enough. I was even asked to be one of ... read more

Today is Diwali festival day and everyone is happy and wishes us Happy Diwali, we manage to squeeze in more food before the taxi arrives to take us to Dehradun to fly back to Delhi. The roads are clearer today and so it doesn’t take us that long to reach Rishikesh. We ask the driver to stop here so we can try and find the copper flasks that Amira told us she saw here by the river when we went to the Aarti. We forgot though that there are two bridges so the driver takes us to the other bridge and we head more into the centre of Rishikesh. It is lovely to see more of the town but we can’t see any copper flasks for sale. We wander further into the maze of streets and ... read more

Just an interesting little story that i forget to blog. We are in Delhi airport about to go off to Rishikesh and Shenton buys me a gift that he believes I would really enjoy. It is a book called Adiyoga (the source of yoga) Though at this time he is not sure about giving it to me now as when he was buying it a man started a conversation with him and said that the book was a wonderful book and it was capable of helping someone seeking spirituality and inner peace and at this point in the conversation I appeared and without realising Shenton was talking with someone and seeing the book in his hand I said, "What's that?" He says its a book for you about yoga, I then said "Don't get that, I ... read more

After a pleasant breakfast with more interersting fellow travellers, we set off for our guided tour of Delhi. First step was the 73m Qutub Minar built as part of the Mulgul dynasty. Our guide was firmly Hindu and NOT a fan of anything Islam so took great pains to explain it might have been mogul king but it was Hindi smarts that designed and built this amazing, striking tower. This site include various other points of interest including an ancient iron pole that never rusted. Apparently the stupid British tried to deciper the writing on it to detained how it was made, only to find the inscription was a prayer to the relevant god, not the secret ingredients for rust proof iron. Next stop was the Jama Masque, the largest in india. It was buiilt by ... read more

After a misty start to the morning of our flight out of Gibraltar I was worried we might get diverted but even the EUR 200 each offer to bump us off the flight due to overbooking didn't stop us from getting the connection and making it to Delhi on time. The E visa on arrival process was a bit random with one queue forming and all the english joining it then a splinter group went off to another desk but we missed the boat on that one and finally another queue seemed to form and we did join that one which proved a good move as this queue moved really quickly and we were out and meeting our driver on time. I was expecting immediate chaos on arrival at the airport but Delhi was well organised ... read more

Some 22 hours after leaving Auckland Liz and I have arrived in Delhi. Thanks to a 4 hour recharge in the 'nap room' at Changi airport, we were ready to go. Thikana home stay is really a comfortable little hotel with aircon, hot water and everything you need. After breakfast and a chat with a fascinating Amercian woman who is into textiles, we headed off to the Lodhi Gardens, where there are a number of tombs dating back to the 15rth century. After a wander around the gardens, amongst the picnickers and joggers, we headed to Khan markets, relatively upmarket markets where we ogled fabrics and traditional costumes before a great lunch. We had planned to go to Gandhi Smitri (Gandhi's home where he was shot) but there were about a million Indian tourists wanting to ... read more

I'm not sure if I'll be able to find the right words to do our first few days in India justice but I'll give it a go! It's been somewhat of a roller coaster! We landed in Delhi and arrived at our hostel late so we didn't do much the first night but we were excited about what lay ahead after all the stories we'd heard. We decided the first day we would try and attack the sites in New Delhi first starting with Connaught Place, which is where the games began! The park in the centre was closed, like as we were to find out most things in New Delhi on a Monday, and whilst admiring the large flag in the centre we were approached by a 'friendly' man who claimed to work in the ... read more

We left Auckland at midnight on 4 Sept and had a great flight Premium Economy on Air New Zealand 787-9. We arrived 630am Tues 6 in Singapore and spent 6 hours in The Ambassader Transt Hotel which was great...had a shower and a sleep and caught flight to Dehli at around 6pm with arrival at 830pm Dehli time. Getting through immigration etc was no trouble and we met Gets Travel rep without any trouble. If we thought Auckland traffic was bad then Dehlis is off the Richter scale...mind you there are 20 million people here. There do not seem to be any road rules apart from the rule of the horn. However we arrived safely at The Claridges which is a beautiful heritage hotel in New Dehli. The plan was to be picked up at 9am for ... read more

Beauty is an important thing for women across the world. As a California girl myself I cant deny that I grew up around a more shallow thinking of what defines beauty. My experience in India has found me in a crowd full of Indians--wherein I was the ONLY white person in the entire village/room/space--and never have I felt less awkward. Imagine all the men and women staring at me every time I step outside. The terrible feeling that every movement I make is being watched and criticized is enough to make me squirm in my clothes. If I wear Indian clothes, their constant gawking makes me feel as if I didn't match colors correctly, and if I wear Western clothes they stare at me as if I'm some sort of alien. And yes...I definitely feel like ... read more
