Welcome to the Festival of Colours as we celebrate the beginning of spring in India with the festival of Holi. This year was my first Holi Festival and already I'm looking forward to the years to come. I first came to India last July with the words: Ïndia, you either Love it...or Hate it" in my mind. Two weeks of temples, sightseeing, religious pilgrimages, cows in the streets, monkeys in the trees, crazy rickshaw drivers and now here I am in India to stay. Holi is celebrated with colors, paints, squirt guns, water balloons and a good sense of humour -or in my case utter paranoia as I roam the streets a prime target for any and all potential water balloon or paint attacks. I decided to keep indoors for the early morning Holi-fest, however the ... read more

A last catch up with family by phone at the boarding gate and I climbed on board the Emirates A380 airbus. This was quite a revelation. My seat was a window seat in the 4th row back next to the stairs up to the cocktail lounge and upper level. The plane was very light and airy with lots of presumably fake walnut finish around. Hostesses were all beautifully dressed and immaculately turned out. The plane was very smooth and quiet and we were very regularly fed and watered. A first for me was the onboard WiFi which I must admit I was quite sceptical about until I tried it. It was fast and reliable and the ability to send texts and WhatsApp messages with photos from 40,000 feet was amazing. Stop over in Dubai was unremarkable ... read more

Its common in India to find joint families. I myself have had the pleasure of staying with several families as a guest on various occasions. A joint family is when the entire family (mom, dad, uncle, brother, cousin, sister, nephew, grandma, brothers sisters aunts cousin twice removed...) all live together in the same home. WHOA. Wait a second...how is that even possible?!?! Usually in the Joint families the family owns an entire building dedicated to their family (each couple having their own room and sharing only a common kitchen, living space and bathroom). Now this concept might seem completely suicidal for us Americans who only deal with our family once a year on Thanksgiving...but here in India, anything less than daily interaction with your family is simply unheard of. The word 'family" here has a very ... read more

India is a country many people say, "Love it or Hate it." And these words carry true for a reason. India is a challenging country, a land of complete extremes. From the extreme climates of desert heats or mountainous snow, to the extreme poverty and wealth from the slums to the palaces. My personal experience in India has been one of numerous ups and downs. I've encountered harshness and difficult situations to the max as well as experiences of kindness and helpfulness from utter strangers. Sometimes I myself cannot believe the circumstances and situations I am often faced with. Needless to say as a blonde, American girl the situations I'm often faced with can be sometimes downright scary but at the end of the day I am utterly thankful for what I have been blessed with. ... read more

Geo: 28.6137, 77.1834Once again, we awake and plan to meet for breakfast early. We have to get to the Hoho bus station for Delhi City Sightseeing Tour. We were organised with a Ola cab (like Uber) and although it's only 6km away, with all the traffic, the bumps, the people, it all takes longer. The beeping of all the horns are now becoming drained into our heads, it's just a noise that happens all the time. Along the way, we see thousands and thousand of people commuting to work, to school, delivering fresh produce, furniture, steel lengths (6-8metres long), all in tuc tucs or motorbikes, cow and wagon, cars, overloaded buses, cows waddling along the side of the roads, dogs, some sleeping, some looking for food, it's so eye boggling to see the variety of transportation. ... read more

Geo: 28.6137, 77.1834This morning, after not much sleep, we showered and met Hanh and Thanh for breakfast, it was a buffet with lots of choices. There was a variety of coffees and teas too. After filling up with food, we were able to go exploring the side streets which had local shops, some were still closed as we were early, but it was good just to get out and see what was around. Today is the day we get to meet Rohit, Praviin's youngest son, who has been put in charge of organising our visit to India for the Wedding. Manee also came with Rohit, she is Praviin's niece, and she has been organised to also help us with the Wedding outfits! We all travelled together to a market place called Graffar Market Beoper Mandal, a ... read more

I’ve really forgotten how to blog. I have my old Ukraine one floating around there somewhere but I remembered how undisciplined I was in maintaining that, so I figured it’d be more realistic that I end up posting just this one.. Normally when I travel, I either have some idea of how things are going to be like, with some anticipation, or I am ready to embrace the unknown. India is a strange in-between. Having spent all my childhood here, it has left me with strong impressions and memories. I arrived in NZ when I was 11 though, which means that my teenage years and beyond were shaped by my time growing up in Auckland, a stark contract to life in India. Also my upbringing was largely Western anyhow, which got further distorted once I moved ... read more

There were three countries that I was looking forward to most on this trip around the world, before I had even set off; Cuba, Japan and India. Europewas starting to get a but samey, a bit boring to be honest - so I was looking forward to something completely different. Well, you don't get much more different than India! Back in London, I had a rather annoying flight time which would see me leave Heathrow very early in the morning and arrive in New Delhi very late at night. When news got through that my flight had been delayed by an hour, I knew then that I'd miss the last metro service in Delhi and that I'd have to get a taxi to the hostel from the airport. Damn. Two buses and three trains got me ... read more

Day fifteen started early, we only had one full day in Delhi and we wanted to see as much as we could so we hopped in a tuk tuk and headed towards the red fort. The area our hotel was in was not the most inviting and I was excited to see some more of India, though my first impressions were of crushing traffic and noise interspersed with flashes of bright fruit, dogs and carts pulled by humped white cows. Arriving at the red fort it looked an imposing sight, all crenelated red walls on the top of a hill but were then informed that it was closed on Mondays so that was all I saw of it. A man offered to show us where the markets were nearby and, like it or not, it seemed ... read more

The air was dripping with suspense when we gathered for the Crenshaw-Roehler Travel Summit back in 2015. It certainly wasn't the first time we convened for a meeting like this and hopefully it wouldn't be the last, but this particular meeting had a special mix of suspense, secrecy and urgency. I don't think anyone knew how it would turn out and I don't think anyone really knew what would be presented. It seemed we had barely unpacked after travelling to Oman and the United Arab Emirates before we were fielding questions about our next adventure. The summit was called so that we could affirmatively answer this pressing question. The summits all share a similarity in that the members, Dad, Kyle and me, each present a list of trip ideas that have been held in confidence until ... read more
